DVC X RunDisney

I was originally planning on a "rest" year for Marathon Weekend and was going to do 10K+Half. At 11 months I booked a CCV DS w/ Walk-In Shower because I prefer a higher floor and could get by without any Epsom soaks and/or ice baths at that total distance. As soon as I saw the Goofy theme, I immediately waitlisted the CCV DS Studio as I will definitely need to do Epsom soak and ice baths with the marathon added in. Luckily, the waitlist has already come through as well as getting a Goofy bib on Tuesday.

(Yes. I should have just done Dopey for a 7th time, but I already had a 10K bib lined up through charity with fundraising completed. So out of pocket was less getting Goofy during general reg. So a 45.5 mile Goofy+ it is lol)

I said I wasn’t going to again……but I registered for the marathon. We usually stay at BRV for MW but this year we’re booked at my other favorite, RIV!
Silly me totally spaced on the 11 month marker for MW, so we have the Friday before and Sunday after the marathon booked at RIV, with a waitlist for Sat night in the middle 😬

DVC x runDisney dilemma:

My husband and I are running Marathon weekend. We booked a CCV studio with points.

We are running with friends from around the country and through the PPMD charity. The charity has a block of rooms at Pop Century for $207/night. We’d love to be with the group at the hotel, and that seems like a good price/opportunity to bank points.

But no hot tub. No lodge lobby. No toaster oven.

What would you do?

I’d bank the points and stay near friends - the fact that it’s only $207 sweetens the deal!

I’d go with the group … the memories with them could be better

Yeah, I thought it was a good deal!

Yes, this is definitely how we are leaning. What use is a hot tub if your friends are across property, right?

Hi all! Looking at getting my wife signed up for her first ever runDisney event! A few questions for you DVC/runners if anyone can answer?

For resort - what's the best one to stay at? It looked like last year the contemporary (and Bay Lake?) have a specific spot they can cheer on which is cool, but Poly has the monorail in walking distance. Any that are typically used by DVCers?

Do you have to sign up for the club rundisney to have a chance as a first timer to sign up? If you are only doing one race, is it even worth it?

Thanks!

Good questions. We’ve only done 1 race, Springtime Surprise 10k. We’re also doing 2 races at the Food & Wine race in October. I own at VGF and Poly but we stayed at BRV because it’s a resort we never stepped foot in and it was less points. We’re staying at the Poly in October though I check all the time to try and get into another resort to save some points but nothing is available. Not a bad problem by any means. Disney has charter buses at every hotel that’ll take you to and from the race so that should be covered. I even think they have designated places in Epcot for spectators too but I’m not sure.

Best way to get into a runDisney race is to be ready and logged in the second the races go on sale. The process reminds me of trying to get concert tickets. Create your runDisney account ahead of time and have different browsers open too. The races sellout in hours and not days and club runDisney doesn’t guarantee anything unless you have gold or platinum status, which can only by attained by waiting in Silver level purgatory. That’s where I am now, having just signed up. And if you’re only planning one 1 race then skip it altogether.

I feel like the Springtime Surprise races took longer to sell out, so maybe would have better luck there even without club runDisney.

I don’t know the answer to which resort is best to stay at, as it’s my first time in January for marathon weekend, but we have gone for a 1br at BLT. It seems like that is fairly popular for race weekend.

You don’t need to have club rundisney to sign up. Me and my husband got a place in the 10k and marathon first time. You just have to have multiple devices and a bit of luck!

Best bet for resorts is one you own at! Make sure you at least lock something in at 11 months. Race weekends are very popular for DVC. Have low expectations for trading at 7 months so you’re not disappointed.

You do not need to be in club runDisney to get a spot. In 10+ weekends I’ve never been shut out and all except 1 I was registering 2 people.

Used to run (got the Coast to Coast in 2016!), but in training for my one (and probably only) marathon in 2019, shortly after discovered torn meniscus in both knees. Not bad enough for walking, but, unfortunately, I think the running days are over…

Hot take: I don't think running full marathons is necessarily good for your health!

I keep telling my husband that (mainly because I don’t like him being out running for 10+ hours per week while I’m slaving away… aka checking Disboards).

This is very true! Especially if you want a studio. There will be transportation for runners and also provisions for spectators (varies by race due to the different race courses).

DD ran the Marathon this past January, and we stood outside our home BWV to cheer her on near the end, while DSiL took their toddler through Epcot and met her at the end. It was wonderful! BTW, for registration the four of us had something like six devices open, trying for the best place in the queue!
