DVC - Where else can we go?

Hi everyone! I'm sure this question has been asked before, so please forgive me. I know with DVC points you can stay in your home resort or use your points at another Disney resort, cruise, Adventures by Disney, but where else can you go? It looked like you could use the points all over the world. I would like to buy into DVC, but my husband is a little skeptical about being locked into Disney every year. If we can actually go other places, I might be able to convince him! Thank you for any info you could provide!

DVC points are best used at DVC resorts. If you want to be able to use your points outside of Disney more than you want to go to Disney, a different timeshare may be better for you. DVC does trade out with other timeshares, you just have to be able to go when they can get it for you.

There are lots of options in the Concierge Collection - top hotels and resorts within the US - as well as about 300 worldwide choices thru the World Passport Collection - which trades thru selected Interval International (II) resorts.

While many perceive that the best value is to use DVC points only at DVC resorts, these other options certainly do offer members other choices if they want a break from WDW.

If you truly want to primarily travel to other locations, there are cheaper timeshares that will afford that ability. If you want an occasional break from Disney, then DVC may still provide enough diversity.

You may even find that your DH ends up enjoying WDW more than he thinks.

I am also trying to convince DH!
I am trying for buying 1/3 of the points and telling him we will go every 3 years (bank, current, borrow).
Then, once he falls in love, we can buy more points!!

Whilst many will tell you that the points are only worth it if you use them in a DVC resort, I have used mine both in DVC resorts, and in some excellent quality resorts around the world.

We have just returned from an exchange to to Marriott Aruba Surf Club - accommodations were fantastic, and definitely comparable to any DVC resort.

We did two trips to Disneyland Paris, which worked out great value, as park tickets were included.

We did an exchange to the Four Seasons at Quinta de Lago in the Algarve. This probably exceeded what we would have got from DVC, as we got a three bed villa with pool, in exchange for a two bed hilton head low season. However, exchange rules have changed slightly since then. It would have cost us a fortune to have paid cash to stay there.

We also exchanged for a couple of nights to Vienna for a small amount of points and that was fantastic.

The only bad deal we had cash wise was to La Manga in Spain. The resort was lovely, but the apartment was basic, and it would have been cheaper to pay cash.

I am from the UK, and I've had great value trips through DVC. There are even more options available to those of you living in the USA. I think if you're going to spend at least half your points at a DVC resort, it's probably worth it. In saying that - although I love my DVC points - I could sell tomorrow, if I found a better home for the money. But, I wouldn't have lost anything. In fact I would have made money, plus I've already had some fantastic holiday experiences for a much lower price than if I'd paid cash.

If you're unsure, buy a small contract, as there are easier to sell.

We have on two occasions used the concierge collection. We have had probably our ver best vacation at the Tenque Verde Range in Tucson. And have had a wonderful time at the Grove Park Inn in Ashville. I can only imagine there are many more vacations that we have not yet considered. We want to start exploring Europe.
