What exactly do the points cover? I know they cover the rooms, but are the tickets included or separate? Is there a discount for the extras (park hopper, etc.), dining plans?

Points are used for accommodations only. Discounts are available for annual passes. Some restaurants also offer discounts for DVC members.

It's still in use. It's the only way (by train) to go west through the mountains.

Your points get you your lodging only. There are discounts from time to time but they vary. And your points also give you the privilege of paying dues every year that continue to go up each year.
