DVC studios - fewer amenities

Do they realize how many sytrofoam cups they will go through for one studio in one year. 365 days times 2 = 730 cups if we only use one cup a day for only 2 adults in a room vs 2 mugs that can be washed by members and staff for the entire year. It's scary to think how much more trash will need to be processed from this money saving, environmentally friendly idea? right?

There have been studies on which is better for the environment, mug or disposable. The study I read stated the breakeven point of energy consumed for both is using a mug 1000 times equals the energy consumed by a single styrofoam cup.

"The lifetime needed for the energy per use of a reusable cup to become less than for a disposable cup, is called the ‘break-even point.” In Table 2, the break-even matrix shows how many uses are required for each reusable cup to do better than either disposable cup." http://www.ilea.org/lcas/hocking1994.html

:scared1:
That is worse than I thought....

No matter how hard you try, though, you still need oil for the raw material in styrofoam. It isn't even the energy to manufacture the item so much as the environmental impact of "disposable" petro chemicals.

I haven't received anything but a generic response to my e-mails.

Has anyone else gotten a response? :confused3 If not, I suggest we "keep those cards and letters coming." After a few days time, resend your concerns.

Regardless of anything else, we should not be ignored!

Add to the fact that "disposable", in relation to polystyrene, is almost a misnomer.

It's certainly an interesting study, and I'm glad you posted a link to it. All too often, people quote 'studies' without providing proof.

It's unfortunate, however, that they don't compare plastic disposable cups as well, especially considering this new arrangement is providing for foam and plastic cups to replace the glasses and ceramic mugs previously used.

Also, the study assumes a commercial grade dishwasher, from 1994, is used to clean the glasses and mugs, and you have to consider this a factor, as any industrial/commercial dishwasher recently manufactured or in use is likely to be more efficient.

Secondly, if we make an assumption that plastic disposable glasses 'cost' somewhere between a paper and foam cup to make, a glass will only have to be used roughly 200 times to 'break even', which to me seems very conceivable.

I still think the environmental impact argument is a fair one, especially when dealing with daily use, high traffic durable goods, which are likely to last long enough to leave a smaller overall energy footprint than the disposables.

And that's not even lending considering to the landfill issue of non-biodegradable waste.

FWIW, we've sent our email in, along with snail mail to the Environmental Initiatives department and to the DVC President.

I agree.....just keep sending them....at least they will know we won't forget about it in a week.....because that is what they expect will happen.

I say we mail new letters daily or at least weekly....till they give us
a reasonable response or change the policy.

Daily might be considered harrassment. :) (note: I'm joking.)

Weekly is certainly reasonable, though. I plan to follow up, with both another email and another snail mail letter, one week from yesterday if I haven't gotten SOME sort of response from them.

Ok, I just sent my email. I also stated that we usually make sugary libations in a blender and wondered how we would clean the blender? Or maybe we should just request a fresh blender daily?
DD25 did like the idea of paper cups, so she could have her drinks "to go", but thought it was crazy to have styrofoam cups. She was also concerned about them blowing off the balcony.

Place it in a zip top bag. i do that with any liquids/gells I pack.

make sure the container is not full, even in a bag. I learned the hard way that the airplane pressure and those little bottles of soap do not get along too well.:sad2:

they took the blender also....Ok....just kidding...well maybe thats next week...

I ask the foodcourt for some cups(and cover) and they always give them.
You need the cups with a cover to take them on the bus;)

If you saw a chubby white girl with glasses chugging her drink at the bus stop.....now you know why:lmao:

I just filtered through as many pages as I could stand ;) and collected all the contact information so that it will be in one place. Hopefully that will make it easier for people to use. Hope it helps!

Tigger: thanks for doing this--I've printed it out! This will make it much easier.

I wrote a blunt letter to MS on Sunday (my first complaint to DVC since becoming a member 7 years ago) - got the canned response. Do other TS like Marriott, HYatt, etc put plastic in their studio portions? I haven't stayed in others, so just wondering. It's bad enough there were paper plates and bowls before - to extend it to the drinkware is ridiculous. They put a kitchenette in the studios precisely for people to be able to eat and drink in the rooms. Most interstate hotels provide real mugs if they have a coffeemaker in the room. And anyone who thinks coffee and wine taste the same out of plastic must not have much of a palette. If the housekeeping staff is stocking/cleaning inappropriately then they need to be retrained - not have our ammenities cut because they aren't doing their jobs. If housekeeping doesn't change the sheets between guests- are they going to start having us provide our own sheets?

They don't even provide straws at VB because of the risk to sea turtles - what happens when all those styrofoam cups start flying off the balconies into the ocean - I bet Styrofoam is GREAT for sea turtles.

This is just a stupid idea. I hope they are getting a lot of complaints about this.

At the Marriotts I've stayed at there are real plates & glasses. They don't use paper or plastic anything. My starwood resort in Maui studio has a deluxe accomandations as the studio comes with a 2 burner stove top, dishwasher (smaller than standard), refrigerator, microwave with convection option, sink, pots & pans, dish soap, plates, glasses, wine glasses, etc...
