Could I buy 2 points at any DVC resort and become a DVC member ?

no, you don't have to buy 160 pts to start but the minimum contract size is 25 pts (only available resale if you're a non-member.)

but the purchase of a 25 or 50 pt resale contract will make you a full DVC member in terms of perks and such (but you would likely have to bank/borrow to book more than a short term stay in a studio.)

If you purchase direct from Disney, your initial contract would have to be the current minimum of 160 points.

As chalee94 pointed out, resale you can purchase what ever is offered for sale.

Disney does not treat those that purchase their initial contract on the resale market any different than those who purchase direct from them.

To keep the value higher. They can take those small contracts and add them to more points they have in inventory and resell them at the current going rate.

Additionally, small resales often go at a price premium and go quickly. So while small contracts can be a great way to get into the system at a low cost, finding a contract can be difficult and you should expect to make more per point.

DVC is probably more likely to ROFR for a small contract if it's a non-member than a current member. Mainly because the cost to service a new member's contract is more than if a current member makes the purchase.

For example printing and mailing the Disney Files magazine would be a new cost to DVC for a new member purchasing 25 points, but for a current member who is already receiving the magazine, they would not get a second magazine, so there is no additional cost.

Doesn't the cost of Disney Files come out of the annual dues?

Yep, but it costs the same to print and mail it to someone with 25 points paying $110 in dues and someone with 500 points paying $2200 in dues. From a cost perspective, Disney is going to like large point owners who don't use a lot of resources - get one magazine, make several large trips with a single phone call. Someone using a small contract to book a day by day standard view studio at midweek, getting the magazine, using the discounts - they aren't a good deal for DVC or DVC members, large point holders are probably subsidizing those folks with their dues - unless Disney sells them more point over time. Someone buying a small number of points resale may be less likely to go back to Disney for their add ons. So it does make some sense for Disney to ROFR small contracts for new owners that they'd let go through for owners that already own points and won't really add much overhead to the system.

I bought a 65 point contract at SSR. I do plan to add more later at different resorts. I bought mine at 86 a point which is cheaper then it is today. I did pay for closing costs, but it was still cheaper then with Disney. I think Resale is a good route if you want to start small. You can stretch your points!! I am using my 65 points in a Studio for 5 nights at SSR. Sat-Thurs. I then add 3 nights in cash on a Disney Cruise and I have a week vacation!!

If you want a small contract at a reasonable price you just have to be patient and contact several brokers with your requirements. Yes you may be ROFRed but this seems lately to only be taking about 15 days to find out so it is not a big time delay.
