DVC in Lake Tahoe and Caribbean?

I am standing firm with 607 points -- NO MORE ADD-ONS!!

At least until they start selling GCV... :rolleyes1

Oh, and I couldn't stop myself from buying CRV if it becomes a reality... :rolleyes1

But I'm standing firm -- NO MORE ADD-ONS!!

Unless my DVC guide calls me with a new incentive promotion...

And there is always Hawaii to consider... :rolleyes2

Now there might be a DVC in the Caribbean? :faint:

Cmon mike-- succumb to the urge- Think of that that disney Wonder cruise to Hawaii-LOL

I really wonder about the Lake Tahoe idea. The story says they're thinking about Nevada, in the Lake Tahoe area...which makes me think "casino." But I don't see Disney going into the casino business.

snip.

Nevada, hmmm. :cool2:
Tahoe is a possibility but can a Las Vegas DVC really be far behind?

There is NO WAY Disney will go the casino route. If they wanted to do that, they have the perfect opportunity with the Cruise Line. DCL is one of the few lines that does NOT have gambling on board. According to their own literature, this goes against the Disney name and mission.

Probably the most awesome vacation club resort system of all would be Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Westin/Sheraton, DVC, etc., forming some kind of mini system where their brand names traded amongst each other.

I agree
That would be the perfect vacation club owners dream- wouldnt it?

I agree
It is against their very nature- I think people just read too much into it- If Disney does build in tahoe itll be special.

You still can not buy alcohol at Magic Kingdom.

true, but you can at other parks thorughout WDW. I dont see how a casino in NV where there are many more would be SOOO against their very nature

I personally dont think it will happen, but I dont think it an absolute no

Disney could open a DVC in Las Vegas or the surrounding area without a casino as part of the deal. I could see Disney marketing a DVC in LV as a family friendly, smoke free resort without any gaming at all. If you want to gamble, you'll have to go off-property. They can build a theatre and put in a top quality show, build a water park to go with it.:woohoo: Yes, I believe you can have a DVC in Las Vegas without gambling.

As an ex Las Vegas resident I agree 100%. I'd go to a Disney resort then toddle on down to the strip to gamble.

I dont know, doesnt make much sense to me. if gambling is not part of your business nature or philosophy then fine, but then why would you build right smack in the middle of gambling, attract people who want to gamble and then dont offer gambling

just offer gabling then at that point

I know, I know theres more to Vegas than gambling, but it just still doesnt make sense. theres more than gambling but gambling is still the backbone

Sure, Disney could have a non-gaming resort in LV. Heck, the whole city is re-inventing iteself to have a more family-friendly image, so I can see it from that angle.

However, I still think it is a long shot for them. Vegas is STILL synonymous with gambling and hookers and Disney will not want to be lumped in with that, no matter how "clean" they make the resort.

Sure, they COULD do it. I just don't see it as one the top 10 locations where they would put a resort. Not even top 25.

Hotel rooms have historically been reasonably priced in Vegas, and remember that if DVC builds a resort there, they also have to sell ownership interests in that resort. The market may not be there.

Las Vegas tried, and failed miserably to market the city as a family destination. MGM built a theme park, it failed and closed in 2000. Wet and Wild water park failed and closed in 2004.

You are spot on! Hotels are too cheap to justify purchasing a timeshare in LV.

FWIW, when we bought into DVC, our guide told us that Hawaii and Las Vegas were the two top spots that members asked about trading out vacations for. The offerings that DVC has for LV vacations are really lacking.

I lived in LV from 1997-2003 and remember when they closed the MGM park. The W&W park was located on real estate that is just too valuable to be used for a water park and the same goes for the land where the MGM park was. Land on the Strip is at a premium and the best use of the land is for more hotel rooms. Plenty of families do go to LV even though the tourism angle is back to promoting the "sin" in Sin City. Disney could find a spot that's off the strip and away from most of the sin. And while many rooms in LV are priced low much of the time, the nicest places are quite pricey plus they are just rooms and they don't have kitchen facilities. If you have ever been to the wave pool and lazy river at Mandalay Bay, you can see how a mini water park might work in the desert. A DVC with a few great restaurants, a stand alone theater and a water park could be a big draw. And I believe there is there is a growing market for timeshares in LV.

Agreed..but Tahoe, now that's a good plan. Alot for everyone and in a beautiful surrounding.

Meant to include this before but forgot... LV not even in the Top 25 locations for future DVCs?!? :confused3

LV, Orlando, LA-Hollywood are the top 3 tourist destinations in the US. Can you really list 25 other locations before you think Las Vegas would be considered?

I don't think LV is in the top 3 family vacation spots. It is a different market, as MGM and Wet & Wild found out. Sure, the land they occupied was worth a lot of $$$, but if the parks had been doing a land office business, it wouldn't matter what the land was worth, they'd still be profitable and operating. A tourist destination is not necessarily a family destination.

DVC trades through II, for full weeks. LV is not normally a full week destination. 3 or 4 days tops for most folks, even convention people.

Also, designing those point charts...DVC is already traditionally heavily loaded on weekends pointwise, and most LV visitiors are "long weekenders" Would it be worth a weekend stay on heavily loaded points? Not to most people.

If the point chart wasn't heavily loaded on weekends, the resort would probably sit empty during the week, and be next to impossible to book on weekends. LV is just not a good fit, IMO, for DVC.

Also, some folks buy DVC looking to (at least occasionally) rent their points and use the cash for other destinations. Even the current $10+ per point rental seems high for LV, even if it was the same point chart as VWL.

There is already an II trade option to LV and most folks still chose a few nights on cash at a Casino resort rather than trading DVC for an II week in LV.

Chuck already addressed many of my comments (far better than I would have....thanks, Chuck! :goodvibes ). Disney and Las Vegas are not synonymous...and Disney does not WANT them to be.

But you also mentioned the top three U.S. tourist destinations...and I think Disney/DVC is far more interested in expanding outside of the U.S., especially considering that Disney already has a huge presence in Asia and in Paris. Combine that with the enormous success of Adventures by Disney (much of which is out of the country), and yes, I can come up with 25 family desitnations before LV. Disney has name recognition around the globe like no other.

I can easily see families doing one of the Italy Adventures by Disney and then staying on an additional week at a DVC resort in the area. It is getting there...the airfare...that is the major cost. Once there, if DVC made it easy folks to extend their trips, people would do it.

Now add DCL into the mix. With the popularity of the med. cruise, the west coast cruise, the Panamanian cruise, etc....same thing....folks go on a cruise and extend their vacation by staying at a DVC resort.

So I guess I stick with my original statement...I don't see LV in the Top 25 locations where DVC would build. Could I be wrong? Sure. Jim Lewis routinely makes what I consider to be bad decisions....:rotfl2:

I thought New York was in the top 3?
