DVC Guide Out of Office - Ready to Purchase

We did a ton of research on UY when we bought direct at the end of June, and since we like to travel in January, I flat out told my guide that we would not buy unless he could get me a Dec. UY. He was able to make it happen fairly easily, but was concerned that we get the 2020 point banked ASAP since the banking window for Dec UY is July 31st. So maybe the issue is the banking window on those 2020 points with the Sept. UY?

The banking window for Sept. UY ends April 30, so the issue is probably the 2020 points. If someone buys a Sept. UY contract between now and Sept. 1, 2021, they will be in their Sept. 2020 UY and are therefore legally entitled to a full set of Sept. 2020 points. If DVD doesn't have that many 2020 UY points at that resort, they can't sell that contract. (They can change the UY month of a set of points but not the UY itself, e.g. they could change August 2020 points to September 2020 points but can't change August 2021 points to Sept. 2020 points.)

She sold us December. It wasn’t until I booked a Thanksgiving week vacation I realized that should we need to cancel for any reason we would forfeit those points since it’s too late to bank them and they would expire Dec. 1.

She only asked when we might think we’d take vacation each year when discussing UY. I wish someone had explained that an ideal UY would be the one where you’re least likely to travel in the 4 preceding months, especially since it’s something that cannot be changed.

I'm so sorry that happened to you; what a bummer, but I'm sure it's easier on the guides to offer a specific month as the default---rather than actually fine-tune each membership to the member. Which stinks for us members!

We want September for the reasons you outlined. We are FL residents and often are APs, we don't go to WDW June-August. Usually, our first trip is Labor Day weekend (September) and our last is April/May. I am fortunate that buying into DVC now there is so much material out there to read about all the details and rules...it can be very overwhelming for a new member.

So if that is the case, wouldn't those points expire august 31st, 2021 and couldn't be used for a 2022 stay without banking them - that is, IF they had the points to give?

DVC will allow points to be banked after the normal deadline has passed, when the points are purchased direct. So if OP can buy those September points, they would be allowed to bank the 2020 points into 2021. It's one of the perks of buying direct.

When you buy direct and you're past the banking deadline, nearly 100% of the time will make an exception and bank the points for you. That's why it seems like it's double points.

Edit: Jinx!

The guide we've been working with explained that while it's not ideal (the banking window), member services can bank them for us automatically.

I'm glad it worked out for your purchase. We would have bought it last month but I wanted to visit Riviera before we made this commitment. We took a trip over there and now are ready to become members!

Yeah, I can see this dilemma. We're buying at Riviera, not sure if that matters versus sold-out resorts.

Here's pixie dust :tink: :tink: :tink: for your purchase to go through. I agree with an earlier poster - I would call the main number and tell them you're ready to buy a September UY and can't wait for your guide to return. There's no way to know when they'll be back - maybe they're sick instead of on vacation.

That's what I understood in my research of UY before I talked with the DVC guide on the phone and on Zoom. I've been reading all the DIS threads to know my stuff (thank you all!!).

Thank you for the pixie dust! :stitch: But, we're going to wait for our guide to return on Sunday.

The main number has been a problem. I got a different guide and that guide soured my experience. They were running my credit card to take my money and never asked about the UY. I had to halt the payment process when we came to this UY impasse. I think this guide would prefer our original guide to deal with the hassle of changing a UY and "asking the manager." So, hopefully, it will all work out this weekend. Happy thoughts!

It could matter this year, given how many of Disney's own points have been used to make other owners whole (allowing 2019 points to be banked late last summer, extending expiration of certain UYs, OTU points, etc.). The fact that they have to get supervisor approval suggests to me that they have so few 2020 UY points that the supervisor has to keep a close account of the number they sell.

I just wanna point out one thing. Some of the information about the shut down that’s occurring is that there could be a period of time where all creation of accounts is suspended. I don’t think it happens until July 17 but be aware that they’re not processing transfers right now at all. So just be sure when you talk to your guide you ask him specifically if the current situation with the shut downs will have any impact on when you will see your account and points able to book your vacation.

Thank you! I heard on the DVC show about the shut down on July 17, which is why I wanted to get this sorted ASAP.

We just bought October UY at AK direct in June and were able to bank our 2020 points via chat.
