DVC “Confessions”

We did not think of keeping it secret as well. When we first bought in 1996, DVC did not have as big a presence as it does now. Still kinda novel. Most people did not know what it was. I must confess I liked it this way. Seemed a little bit exclusive. It was really set apart from the hotel experience. Now it seems that you almost need to be DVC to stay on property anymore. Ok not really that bad yet. Dont get me wrong, I love DVC and have zero regrets on any of our purchases. However I do not like the new trend of putting up towers everywhere. DVC should feel like it is more than just a hotel stay.

This is why we kept it a secret not because we thought they'd wanna stay on our points.
I agree, I find it to be rude and nobody's business when it comes to how much someone spent on a large financial purchase unless you make it their business. Have no problem writing that here in ROFR posts, but to friends and family that is awkward. I don't see how this applies to them in any way.

I feel uncomfortable when people ask me how much my house cost and how I can afford these things, were not obligated to give an explanation. All the info is online for them to read..

I get that all the time when it comes to DVC and Disney trips. “That must cost a fortune!” Or “How can you afford that?!” It bothers me because I feel like I’m being judged, like they’re implying there’s something wrong with my going to Disney so much and spending money to do so. People also usually just don’t get it and think DVC is like a typical timeshare, like we’re be scammed somehow lol.

Yep. During our visit we say we were going to Aulani and they said oh that is like $10,000! I probably should've schooled them on DVC resale at that point but I decided not to.

Those people are just jealous, especially the ones that try to put you down for it!

I have an ex "friend" that can't afford to travel and goes nowhere yet every time I posted our travels she had something negative to say... "oh you guys are traveling and don't care about covid" "oh are those chairs on the balcony plastic, I thought it was a 5 star hotel?" Like wow!! People just need to say less sometimes

My wife and I have had conversations about "keeping up with the Jones's" and why it seems like everyone we know has a lake house, or a condo in the mountains, or an RV/boat/ATVs and go camping every summer, etc.

Then we realized that DVC was "our" thing that we invested in. We could have probably put money into some of those other things but didn't, and came to terms with the understanding that just as we are coveting others assets, others are probably coveting ours.

Ultimately, envy is the thief of joy. We are happy with our DVC ownership so far, and it has brought us so many great memories and so much fun and bliss for our family. I will not soil my outlook by focusing on what I don't have, rather than all that I am fortunate to possess.

P.S. in sticking with the thread, my confession is that I dislike Boardwalk, AKV (we are not animal people and hate zoos also), and Poly (haven't tried the tower yet, but I'll bet I like it MUCH more than those Motel 6 "longhouses" lol.)

I like towers. I like BLT, I like Riviera, I like Gran Destino, I will probably like Poly tower.

I’m just way too honest. I say “I saved a lot AND someone important to me died and left me a small inheritance which made that possible for me”. Partially because I don’t like money taboos as I feel they keep us all poorer, but I do like manners and maybe they’ll feel chastened from judging if they realize someone died.

Multiple monetary things can be true at once though. I had a lot of financial assistance with graduate school AND I ate PB&J from home every day for years while paying off my student loans as fast as I could. And now I am here and I own my DVC points and my house.

I don’t like to tell people about the timeshare ownership though because I suspect they might judge it. So when I do want to tell them I mention I got a good deal on it as a used timeshare. This self effacement issue may prevent direct purchases in the future for me.

In my experience when I told some people I've gotten an inheritance before it was almost like an "oh she got it without having to do anything" type thing. Oh well who cares what people think, right.

In the end, people spend their money on what they want to. It's funny how when you let someone borrow money all of a sudden you're last on the payback list while their out living their lives. I don't let anyone borrow money anymore and we shouldn't feel guilty for spending our money on Disney which brings us great joy and memories 😊

This wouldn’t bother me at all. But also people know I work, but even if they didn’t…

Let them think that. Then when someone important to them dies, and they realize what that means, their prior judgment of others and rude words will live rent free in their head forever, as a reminder. Karma.

I also don’t like BWV, which is weird, since we love BCV, but there’s just something about the BW vibe that throws us off. Sadly, we’re at BW the next trip due to BC being a hot mess of construction, but that’s mainly due to the location rather than the resort itself.

However, we are total Tower Haters. If I wanted a tower, I’d go stay at a Hilton or Marriot. I can cope with BLT, the location and views are good enough to make up for it being a tower, but at Poly it’s longhouses all the way, no interest in buying or staying at PIT. And Riviera is the one resort I unclick when doing an availability search. Good thing there’s so many types of DVC, so that there’s a favorite resort for everyone?

I’m a tower hater too. You couldn’t pay me to stay at Riviera and the new Poly tower is an insult to the original resort imo. I love Poly but that tower just doesn’t belong there. Unfortunately it looks like this is the direction Disneys going in with all of their new DVC resorts. They’re no different than Marriotts. It’s sad. But I do love BWV (one of our home resorts), and I prefer it a million percent over BC, which holds no appeal for me. It’s funny how different people’s preferences are.

Welcome to the club fellow tower haters! I completely agree. The theming is also underwhelming, it just feels like a ramada inn. BWV is our original contract. I do agree that BW has lost some of its vibe. The boardwalk used to be a destination, but I think they did not want to compete with Disney Springs and it has languished. Pitty really. I would love to stay at BC but have never done so. We will never stay at RIV. No vibe! Small lobby noisy and subdued theming. PIT and the new tower at Fort Wilderness are just out of place. Pity, I really hate to see this.

Will LSL be a tower? I was assuming it would be more like a WL but not sure

I think i need to book a stay at the ramada inn and stay, it would be a lot cheaper 🤣🤣
