Actor Harris dies aged 72
22.04PM BST, 25 Oct 2002

Veteran actor Richard Harris, 72, has died at University College Hospital in London having been treated for cancer.

The legendary Irish actor had been undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer, at the central London hospital.

The actor had been undergoing chemotherapy and was said to be responding well to treatment. He was aiming to return for the third movie in the Harry Potter series.

"With great sadness Damien, Jared and Jamie Harris announce the death of their beloved father Richard Harris. He died peacefully at University College Hospital," a statement by his three children said.

Harris became known to a new generation of film fans after starring as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the movie blockbuster Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

He had just completed work on the second movie, Chamber of Secrets, before falling ill.

Harris is most famous for his films A Man Called Horse and more recently Gladiator having trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

He built a reputation for his commanding presence on stage and screen. But he also became notorious for his off-screen antics with a legendary capacity for drinking.

DH just called on his way home from work. He said he had just heard this and I was going to see if anyone here had heard about it. I loved him in HP and I really hate to hear this. :(

RIP - Prof Dumbledore

Ohhhhhhhhhh no :( :( :( :( How sad!

Ok...this is weird.....but last year, before the first Harry Potter movie came out, and they were saying which actors were going to play the different characters, as SOON as I saw Richard Harris cast in the role of Prof. Dumbledore, I thought to myself "How do they (the movie people) know that he won't die before they've finished making all the sequels?????" I don't know why I thought that at the time... he's relatively young...early 70's....and I had no idea that he had a disease. But it's a thought that has stuck with me to this day.

Yikes.....I can't believe he died though.... What a shame :(

This is a very sad day. Harris was great actor and it will adversly affect the series to replace him with another Dumbledore for the later movies.

Just last Sunday DH and I were happily(and badly) singing along with "Macarthur Park" in the car--after DD#1 asked "is this the cake song?" I told her that this singer was indeed Professor Dumbledore.
The DJ told a story that Harris didn't think that the song would be a hit, and bet the writer (Jimmy Webb) his rolls royce vs. $100,000 that it would not be. A few weeks after the song's release Webb was driving Harris' Rolls!
This will make the next HP movie bittersweet for me and my girls, esp. DD#1 who is 10. God bless him.

Oh, I'm so sad!...
We got to see him on stage as King Aurthur in Camelot...he was wonderful!
We loved him in Harry Potter also.

Oh no, that is so sad. He was a wonderful actor. I loved him in Camelot (and heck even Orca). It sounds crass, but what will they do in the next Harry Potter movie. I bet this is hard on those 3 kids, they have spent a lot of time with him in the last 2 years.

I'd forgotten about Camelot, but it was wonderful. My oldies channel is playing "Macarthur Park" right now. I have the album that is on--or I used to, it was my dad's. Wonder if I still do.

:( :(

I had heard he was ailing. I loved him in A Man Called Horse and Camelot. I was hoping with his roles in Gadiator and the Harry Potter series that he would be around for a while . . .

:( So sad. Although the first time I believe I have ever seen a film of his is when I saw Harry Potter, I was very impressed.

So sad. The world has lost a terrific actor. :(

Loved him in Orca, and and A Man called Horse....a truly classic role, for a truly classic man.:( :(

This saddens me greatly. Just this morning, my coworkers and I were talking about him, and were saying how it sounds like he was going to recovery fully from his cancer. I mentioned that I hope he lives to make all the movies, I can't imagine anyone else as Professor Dumbledore.

So sad one of my favorite actors.

I read this a little while ago on MSN news. :( He was such a good Dumbledore! Made it just how I pictured him in the book.
