Duggar surprise?

I dont want to get into religion either however it seems that many of the out of the ordinary religions seem to really push their beliefs and try to convert others more than other religions do..

And yes many would prefer their children to marry someone with the same beliefs however would you tell your child they could NOt marry someone who didnt?

As far as the colleges and career choices I have seen this said for a while on these boards along with others about this family

Agreed - but being pushy about religious beliefs is not exclusive to the Duggars.

As far as the marriage aspect, depends on how wide the gap is and how grounded each party is in their beliefs. I would certainly counsel the kids if their vast differences in religious beliefs could potentially be a trigger for marriage troubles later.

And I never say never.

Just to add something not so serious to this thread...I am sure there are many husbands who must be jealous of how much Mr Duggar 'gets' LOL ;)

He probably only "gets" when she's ovulating. Don't want to "waste that seed" if she's not at peak fertile times!

I wouldn't count on that. One of the books that they "recommend" for advice on intimacy and gave to Josh and Anna when they got married encourages women to be available to their husbands always.

So yeah, I think there's more than a few men jealous of Jim Bob.

So no "honey I have a headache" for Michelle or Anna (or the other Duggar girls) I guess.

Wow...so much anger directed at people no one even 'really' knows.

Just curious.....how do you all feel about those who raise their children in Amish communities? Do you hate them too? For their belief system? Their lifestyle? The way they choose to raise their families?

IMO...to each his own. Who am I to tell others how to live? Opinions are fine and dandy but, at some point, continuing to criticize people (especially people you don't even know) for doing things differently than you do becomes nothing short of obnoxious.

Agreed - I attribute a lot of the criticism to ignorance and immaturity and our constant need as a society to denegrate others.

Having no idea what book(s) he gave them, nor having not read them, I would have no idea. I would've thought they "conserved" for only the most fertile times.

Yeah -- sounds like the women must please the men at all times! Can see how most men would be jealous of that!

The Amish aren't exploiting their kids or their religion on national tv now, are they?! :sad2:

Not only that, but their children are actually allowed to rebel during their teen years. Imagine that.

I attribute a lot of criticism to the fact that the Duggars choose to live their lives in the public eye, on national television, which opens them up to criticism, comments, and whatnot.

If they weren't exploiting themselves on national television, nobody would know or care about them. Plain and simple.

Is there anger? I don't know...I didn't read the whole thread.

I didn't see, from what I did read, anyone say they hated them. I did a thread search for "hate" and all I found was this:

I've never told anyone how to live, and I'm guessing no one here has met nor told the Duggars how they should live. But the Duggars put themselves out there on a "reality" show, and people are going to talk about it. To me (as in "my opinion, on a discussion board"), the parents seem to feel superior in their beliefs and Michelle appears to be caught up in the quantity of her children and pride in the number of her pregnancies.

As far as the Amish...I never felt, from anything I ever read or heard or saw, that they thought of themselves as superior (as, IMO, the Duggars do), nor did I ever see them chirping all over reality TV and The Today about HOW MANY children they have. Rubs me the wrong way. And I'm entitled to be rubbed any way I want. ;)

Personally, I love Sister Wives. I respect the choices they made, as consenting adults. They don't come off as superior in their beliefs; they don't think they're better than anyone else.

I'm all for people living their lives the way they choose, but hell yes, I might very well have opinions about them, especially if they're making a point of putting themselves on display.

Interesting opinion, given that the 'consenting adults' of Sister Wives have their combined 16 children featured on the show also ;)

Sister Wives is based on their polygamist lifestyle. It's not about the kids, it's about their religious beliefs and what it's like to be a polygamist. As opposed to the Duggars show which is all based on the number of kids one woman has birthed and how they make it work.

So what is your point? Because there is a big difference between the shows. Sister Wives "glorifies" polygamy and 19 and Counting "glorifies" the fact that one woman birthed 19 kids. (Glorifies for lack of a better word)

Yes, there are kids in both. However, Sister Wives could still be a show without the kids involved. Without the kids, 19 and Counting wouldn't be a show at all.

Sidebar: It makes me wonder if Michelle Duggar doesn't have an ulterior motive (keeping the show on the air) for having yet another baby.

I think she has an "addiction" to having an infant but I do think ratings might play a role to be honest..no more babies, no more show (eventually) and nobody paying for their house or cars or trips anymore. I speculate it is more Jim Bob than Michelle driving the rating/show part of it...it's likely a win/win for them..they make money/are provided for and she gets more newborns.

This! ::yes::

That's 16 kids between 4 wives, and they're hardly focused on HOW MANY children they can cram into their fertile years.

If you don't agree to the Duggar's being sheltered, would you agree they are insulated from mainstream society?

I think that word better describes their life. :)

Of course!

I don't find that inherently bad. I just think "sheltered" carries with it a heavy negative connotation and when we are saying prisoners have it better--it loses its meaning in the hyperbole.

But they are definitely insulated per their own admissions and the observations of the viewers.
