Dropping a day from a reservation?

DW and I are going on a DCL cruise next December. We are going to stay at WDW the night before we board, but there is a 50/50 chance we can do 2 days before. It’s all going to depend on work stuff that we wont know about at the 11 month mark. Given December is very popular, I was thinking of just booking the 2 nights at 11 months. How easy is it to drop a day from a reservation? We are a June use year so we bank in January so in theory should be fine there, but I wasnt sure how it would work. We would likely know around 90-120 days in advance of the stay if we are for sure going or not for that added day.

Thanks as always for the help.

That sounds like a good plan since you’ll know before the 31 day Mark, your points won’t go into holding if you don’t use them allowing you to bank them

All you need to do is Modify your reservation online. As above, as long as you do it at least 31 days before checkin, your points won’t go into holding.

@Steelers0854 Do you have any other Disney trips planned on points earlier in this UY? If you do, make sure you use any banked/borrowed points on the earlier reservation(s) first. If you end up having banked/borrowed points on this December reservation and drop a day leaving banked/borrowed points available when you cancel you cannot bank them again.

Wouldn’t it be a dream if the system automatically reallocated for you? I am worried I will be the only person in my family who understands DVC because some of this is so “in the weeds” and you sort of have to learn by doing.

Yes! It would be cool if you could "transfer" points from different contracts into a shared pool to use. I know some members like keeping them separate, especially if they want to withhold banked points from a reservation, so I guess there’s no single method that works for everyone.

My family would have NO idea how the points/contracts work. I'm lucky they know the different room types 🤣

Actually, I wouldn’t want them to do that. Sometimes, I have reasons for not reallocating points.

Just like merging. I do t want them to automatically merge.

Thank you everyone, i really appreciate the help!

Thank you! I didnt even think about this. Really appreciate the heads up.

How do you ensure this? So for example, if I have a stay booked, then I book another stay further out and end up borrowing points to book it, I'd prefer if the closer stay used the borrowed points. Is there an easy way to re-allocate which points are used for which stays without needing to cancel and rebook?

Unfortunately, no.

You would have to book something 31+ days into the future that requires the same number of borrowed points.

Cancel that reservation.

Modify the reservation earlier in your UY to now take the borrowed points (don't change anything, just modify it and the system will now use the borrowed points over current UY allotment). This would also have to be done 31+ days in advance.

Then book the stay later in your UY.

My husband doesn’t even know which resorts we own at. 😵‍💫
He literally signed all the paperwork not know what he was signing and didn’t care. Said “it’s up to you”. Both the Disney contracts “sign by the Mickey Head” and the resale ones.
Of course, when I pass away, good luck. No one has the vaguest idea how DVC is run. And doesn’t really want to learn.

There's no way to reallocate the points once the second reservation has been made with borrowed points.

What i would do if I knew for sure that I would be booking that 2nd reservation would be to book a ghost reservation that involved borrowing the number of points is need. Then I would cancel it immediately.

I would then modify the earlier reservation after I canceled the ghost. This will use the borrowed points before taking any points from the current UY. Thereby freeing up those points to be used for that second reservation that you want to make.

Help me out - when you modify that first reservation, you don't change anything about the dates right? So what is there to modify? Do you just click on "modify," but then rebook it for the exact same room and dates, but using the borrowed points? Does that require another room to be available, or does it work because you're just re-booking the same room you already booked? Is there any risk that you'll lose your reservation?

You don't change anything unless the borrowed points are coming from a contract that you did not check off when you originally made the reservation. If that's the case, just check off that contract. The other contracts will be locked but those borrowed points will still be taken ahead of the current UY's points Dates and room type remain the same and you don't have to worry about another room of the same booking category being available. Since you're only modifying the reservation for the exact same days there's no chance of losing your reservation amd the confirmation # stays the same. Done this many times.
