We will be driving from Ohio with 2 kids - ages 8 and 5. We will be leaving home on the Friday after Thanksgiving and would like to drive to the FL border that day and then stop for the night. What time would we need to leave in the am (allowing for gas, bathroom and lunch break)? Are there any areas around the FL border that would have nice but fairly inexpensive hotels that we could get into without a reservation.

You may want to look at the Valdosta, GA area just north of the border. If I recall, there isn't much on 75 in FL until after you cross I10 in the Lake City area.

The "without a reservation" issue seems a little scary to me. That time of year has a lot of people hitting the road. With many chains you have up until 6pm to cancel a reservation.

We use hotels.com to investigate hotels and their prices. Then we go to the hotel's web site or we call the front desk.
