Hi guys

Have any of you done this drive before?

Which route would you recommend?

Any other tips for the drive?

I've dug up this old post. A lot of it doesn't relate directly to your question, but hopefully some of it will be helpful. :thumbsup2

had to drive up once because we were diverted due to a hurricane, Straight forward drive
Paul

we did it this summer, wasnt an issue at all, the price diff meant we had little choice tbf, it was alot faste rthan mco and the only issue was dragging kids and suitcases to off site car rental, drive was fine, we did a stop at hampton inn in deerfield (which i would deff recommend clean free beer/wine/snack and free bfast, quiet and nice little pool)
then did 3hr drive up to wdw...roads are well signed we had a tomtom but didnt need it, if there is a massive price difference i would say do it.
i agree the last day is long, we left villa at 10am, drove, stopped for lunch, the car drop off, then airport, flights, we ended up travelling for 24hours which is a long day, but was the difference between travelling or not travelling iykwim

We did it this year too - drove straight up from our flight and then had two nights in Fort Lauderdale on the way back.

I would definitely recommend stopping about half way, or even closer, to the airport and finishing the drive the next day, as it wiped me out to do the drive straight after the flight. We had tea at Bob Evans after driving about 3 hours without a stop and I had to drink 5 cups of coffee, which then made me feel really wierd the next day or two!

Ending with a couple of nights in Fort Lauderdale was also great as we were able to relax on the beach. We stayed at the Pelican Grand Beach Resort and we thought it was wonderful.

Took the Florida turnpike down to Miami from Orlando, spent the night, came back on the i95... I found both ways to be really easy and straightforward! ...... (and I'm a woman!!)

We also did this drive in July/August. Fairly straightforward from the airport to the Turnpike, then just keep going north!!

Make sure you have enough change for the toll booths. However, once on the turnpike proper, you only pay when you are getting near to Orlando - it worked out at about $14 each way.

We also discovered that there is an Earl of Sandwich at the Fort Pierce Service Plaza, around 90 miles from Orlando, worth a stop for a snack.

We did this journey the other day - we use the US27, prefer it to the turnpike as you go through a few little "towns" so you can always grab a coffee/food, also there are things to look at. It may be just me but I find the turnpike SO SO boring!!!

It took us about 2hrs 45min.

That's an interesting route - might try that on the way back this year. Another thing I like about it is that you end up approaching Miami from the NW, so you can get to the airport from the west side and avoid a load of traffic. That said, you must have been going for it to make it in 2h45m

That's what I was thinking - a lot of the time I was slightly above the speed limit on that route, and it took us 4 hours not including stops!

Oops!!!
We have done that route a few times now and it has never taken us much over 3 hours! Hubby drives though and I dont pay much attention to the speedo. :rolleyes1 (also we stay on the US27 so it cuts off travelling time actually getting to WDW?)
