Drinking while pregnant

Donna said:
Since the 3rd trimester is weeks, even could be days from birth, you would let your child have a drink? Honestly, that just blows me away that there are people out there that DO this! Off or on the soapbox, i just cannot fathom it. I would think someone that needs it THAT bad may have more problems than they care to admit.

 So anyone who has a glass of wine at the end of pregnancy is now an alcoholic? Please.
I noticed that you wrote earlier that you had Dr Pepper when you got home. I take it you didn't bother to breastfeed your children since I am sure YOU would never pass on caffiene to your newborn. But then you gave it formula? :confused3

What do you not understand about the fact that most, if not all of the posters said that they were told by their OB/GYN either that it was OK, or the Dr even suggested it for medical reasons. Sorry but you are the only person I see with a problem..... a reading comprehension problem.

plane trips are not allowed

since when? Plane trips are allowed up until a couple of weeks before the dues date.

bacon, lunchmeats and hotdogs just add on more weight that's harder to lose after pregnancy

only if they are consumed at a rate that makes the caloric intake more than the calories burned

I believe the response of the waitress should have been different. Maybe she is concerned abouth the health of your baby, but after all it is your baby. I dont' believe in drinking while pregnant but it is a very personal decision. If you say your mother did it and had 7 healthy children, you have basis for your decision.

I wonder... Did you notify it to the person in charge of the restaurant? I believe her comment was inappropriate.

Well I wish everything comes out fine and congratulations on your new baby.

Sweetie, the third trimester is *3* months long...hope I cleared that up for you. Another poster here said her Doctor ENCOURAGED her to have a glass of wine to relax and destress. Maybe someone who wants to sit in judgement of other Mothers and act like they have more knowlege than an Ob/Gyn has "problems" :confused3

No kidding! Then you must know that INCLUDES THE LAST MONTH of pregnancy! If you didn't...news bulletin...IT DOES! Last month means birth is 1-4 weeks away!!!! Anyone that is pregnant and consumes alcohol is setting themselves up for judgment. Geez, think of your child...it's only 9 mos OR WAIT..that would be 3 TRIMESTERS!!!! :teacher:

You'll have to show me where i said that, this thread is getting too long to find the quotes, lol.
Right, didn't breastfeed...formula it was. Had to have that Dr. Pepper, geez, i went without it for 9 loooooooooooooooooong months. :rotfl:

I'll have to find the quote for you...I posted while you posted

I skipped over most of the posts on this thread because it looked like it got pretty volatile. ;) I did skim through all 10 pages though. While I agree that the waitress overstepped her bounds tremendously, I'm in the camp that doesn't think a woman should drink by choice once they know they are pregnant. I wouldn't presume to tell anybody else how to live their life however and to each their own. I'm sure all mothers have done more than one thing that could potentially harm their child over the course of raising them to adulthood and practically everybody turns out fine. ;) Now maybe if your darling child turns out to be the next BTK you can wonder if that drink/smoke/kilimanjaro safari ride was what pushed them over the edge. :earboy2:

I just wanted to link this article which was recently published in the Nov. 20, 2005 edition of The Sunday Times in Britain and put in a few snippets. I'm not trying to cause a greater controversy or hammer in my views on those in the other camp. I just hope it will give you something new to think about as it is about some new research about low levels of alcohol during pregnancy.

SCIENTISTS have captured graphic images of the damage done to unborn babies as a result of women drinking during pregnancy.

Just one glass of wine a week can make babies “jump” in the womb throughout a nine-month pregnancy. Experts believe this abnormal hyperactive behaviour is the result of alcohol slowing or retarding the formation of the central nervous system.

...

The new research suggests even moderate alcohol consumption makes a baby 3½ times more likely to suffer from abnormal spasms in the womb. The findings, by Peter Hepper, a professor at Belfast University’s foetal behaviour research unit, appear to back the view that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

How selfish of you. Don't you know that Breastfeeding is best for the baby. any mother who can't give up Dr Pepper to breast feed their baby has a lot more serious problems going on.

If you are going to QUOTE phrases, please quote the whole phrase and not just the part that benefits you. i said, depending on pregnancy stage regarding the plane.
and MY ob/gyn said it was forbidden....like we already said, all drs. are different. My prenatal teacher said it was too risky. I was a first time mother so i listened and none of the studies and evidence have ever proven them wrong.
No reading comprehension problem here...but i AM getting tired so let's continue this tomorrow. lol :rotfl:

No, you're certainly not alone in your beliefs regarding this subject. To me, it's no different than bringing your baby home from the hospital and celebrating by giving a sip of wine to the newborn! I happen to know a couple where the wife drank a few glasses of wine during her pregnancy (we were both at the same wedding) and her child was born with all kinds of problems, lived to be about 9 yrs old and died. No, it cannot be proven that drinking caused this but it cannot be disproven either. do YOU want to take that chance? i certainly would not. 9 months isn't THAT long in the whole scheme of things and a baby is certainly worth the sacrifice. I am not flaming at all, just stating my beliefs. Everyone is responsible for their own selves and fetus.
That being said, the waitress probably should have had someone else take over that table. i know for myself, I could not serve an obviously pregnant woman. Smoking is just as bad, if not worse. Heck, i didn't even drink caffeinated drinks with either of my kids! I couldn't wait to have some Dr. Pepper when i got home, lol.

Here you go!

Thanks Donna, but I will take my Ob/Gyn's opinion over yours anyday. :) My 12 year old is in seventh grade accelerated classes and I did have a glass of southern comfort in my 8th month (in case you didn't notice he is a GRADE above where other kids his age are AND he is in honors programs) Guess I will toot MY horn! :goodvibes

3rd trimester=12 weeks, depending how you count them. Just to clarify what i meant. whether you drink alcohol in that first week of that last trimester or what, how can you justify it, is beyond me.
Thanks to Chereya for posting that information. Be prepared, they will tell you what you find on the internet isn't valid but i do appreciate you finding it.

One glass of wine a week is a heck of a lot more than most pregnant women choose to drink these days.

well, antibiotics are prescribed and the infection they are taking care of would most likely do alot more damage than the antibiotic itself, depending on stage of pregnancy, plane trips are not allowed, bacon, lunchmeats and hotdogs just add on more weight that's harder to lose after pregnancy. Yes, the list could go on forever...but any type of drug/alcohol not prescribed by a doctor, consumed by a pregnant woman at any stage...well...i feel sorry for her. Go get a neck message if you want to relax..does wonders for tension..

It's hard to tell exactly what you are trying to say. The first 1/2 of the post is one long run on sentence. It (IMHO) appears that you said .....

well, antibiotics are prescribed and the infection they are taking care of would most likely do alot more damage than the antibiotic itself, depending on stage of pregnancy
.....then continued the sentence with another thought.

And your point was? All that was , was an earlier post of mine.

Are you drunk right now? You asked me in post 205 to show you where you posted about your need for Dr Pepper.

As you should toot your horn! We're all proud of our kids...i surely have no argument with that. Congratulations on your son's accomplishments. :cheer2:

No, but i sure am tired. What i need to see though, is where i asked you to show me my need for dr. pepper. Don't recall asking to see that but i will check post 205.

<So anyone who has a glass of wine at the end of pregnancy is now an alcoholic? >

I was asking where i said THIS, that people drinking at end of pregnancy are alcholic. Just can't seem to find that word anywhere except your post.
