Drinking while pregnant

Glad to help!

I think it's pretty sad when people would rather take a risk with their child's health, just to have a drink.

Yes, you are right. I had one glass of wine during my pregnancy to counteract stress at my doctor's advice. Someone should call Family Service's and let them know what a selfish, sad parent that I am. I am sure my child would be much better off without me.

Yes, anyone that drinks during pregnancy is thinking of themselves, which in my book, is selfish. Are they thinking "gee, this drink will do wonders for the baby"? No, i don't think so. This sounds to me like an "if the show fits....." If you look back in one of my earlier posts, the person i was quoting was Jennifer Willford, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the study's first author, obviously someone a little more knowledgeable on this subject than any of us.
If you call being passionate about a subject "being on a soapbox", yes, i'll stand on that soapbox, especially if it concerns something/someone that can't speak for themselves, i.e., animals, children. Actually, i've only stated the facts on the subject and stated I could/would not have served that person. Others could do that, i could not. And i would not work for an establishment that forced me to.
So has anyone found the link showing drinking during pregnancy, early or late, small amounts or large, is good for the fetus?

Many posters have been advised by their doctors that having an occasional drink is fine. Do you think that they are liars, their doctors don't know what they're talking about, or what? And what makes you more qualified THAN A DOCTOR!

<"There is no safe level of drinking during pregnancy and there is no safe time to drink during pregnancy,">

And what is it about that quote that you don't understand? What i would like YOU to post, tiggersmom2, is a link showing it's NOT detrimental to the fetus.

ANY amount COULD BE detrimental.

Well Donna, I'll trust MY Ob/Gyn over any websites out there. Ofcourse they are not going to advocate drinking during pregnancy b/c professionals must CYA .(I hope you know what that means.) They are certainly not going to do anything that may cause a lawsuit. However, many Docs will tell you that a glass of wine OCCASIONALLY will cause no problems.

Actually, not brushing your teeth during pregnancy can lead to many more problems than one glass of wine.....

Just curious, those who think one glass of wine in a pregnancy is a big risk, did you have any caffiene? Sugar? Artificial sweetener? Artificial colors and flavors? Herbal teas? Non-organic meat and vegetables? Smoked? Clean a litter box?

It is not any different.

Actually, no, i had NO caffeine, very little sugar, no soda/pop at all, no tea at all, mostly fish, very little redmeat..nothing smoked-yuk and only recently got a cat. I was very fortunately to have a 10lb 1 oz. healthy boy scoring 10 on the apgar scale and 10 years later (yes it took that long to have another), i had a healthy 8 lb. 9 oz. boy, can't remember his apgar score. They have both grown up to be very healthy, one a junior in college, one in 5th grade. I even worked and had the first one in daycare! now THERE is a whole nother thread!

If you were willing to take that risk, that's your decision. However, I will not make that choice.

Well, I drank caffeine, had an occasional glass of wine, had lots of red meat, some pop, plenty of sugar, some fish, lived around my dad who smokes....and had a healthy baby boy with a 10 APGAR too.

Who wins?

Absolutely nothing makes me more qualified. Every doctor is different, like anyone in any profession. The only difference i would say would come to play here is the age of the dr. The newer doctors have read the recent studies on this subject and probably have the most up to date information. If the problem didn't exist, hmm....wonder why there are so many articles and studies. For the record, my drs. were adamant about this as were my prenatal teachers. no surprise, huh... :teeth:

Actually, since my son is only 4, I'd say the jury is still out. I'll keep you posted.

Not to mention you are not supposed to eat soft cheese. I didn't know that until the end of my 2nd pregnancy, and one of my 'cravings' had been for Brie.
Oh, and some fish. They don't want you to eat certain fish while you are pregnant.

Hi Briarmom! This question is not being askes as part of the debate. I'm just curious. What kinds of fish should you aviod while pregnant? I haven't heard of this. Thanks!

Nope. My dh has already completed all of the USAFA and is a fighter pilot. His mom had a beer when she was pregnant...at least one. And she had it to bring her milk in AT the HOSPITAL where dh was born 33 years ago. :teeth:

Yes, and I think you are only supposed to have Tuna 2 times per week at the very most.
I don't remember the rest. I remember being worried because we lived in Alaska when I was pregnant with my 2nd and we ate a lot of fish (but then all those were ok). I will try to find a list.
Oh, and since I moved during each of my 2 pregnancies, I have had several doctors. Old, young, male, female, and all of them said a glass of wine in the 3rd trimester was fine.

Right Aidensmom, and add to that list antibiotics, plane trips, bacon and lunch meats or hotdogs, the list could go on and on...

Are the moms to be who do any the above things also selfish?

Since the 3rd trimester is weeks, even could be days from birth, you would let your child have a drink? Honestly, that just blows me away that there are people out there that DO this! Off or on the soapbox, i just cannot fathom it. I would think someone that needs it THAT bad may have more problems than they care to admit.

well, antibiotics are prescribed and the infection they are taking care of would most likely do alot more damage than the antibiotic itself, depending on stage of pregnancy, plane trips are not allowed, bacon, lunchmeats and hotdogs just add on more weight that's harder to lose after pregnancy. Yes, the list could go on forever...but any type of drug/alcohol not prescribed by a doctor, consumed by a pregnant woman at any stage...well...i feel sorry for her. Go get a neck message if you want to relax..does wonders for tension.. ;)

Well, if I had skipped the wine, my son would probably have been born a month earlier. Thank God I had it, despite the opinions of the know-it-alls around me who thought I should not listen to my doctor. I already had a very high risk pregnancy long before I had the glass of wine. My son was going to be premature no matter what, but my doctor was trying to extend the time in the womb as long as possible. Stress could have caused labor. The one glass of wine was suggested by my doctor as a way to prevent that.

And when he is accepted into any college he wants to go to, and is offered scholarships to all of them to boot, as I am sure he will because his selfish, risk-taking, wine-drinking mother was, I will be sure to let you all know about it. ;)

Sweetie, the third trimester is *3* months long...hope I cleared that up for you. Another poster here said her Doctor ENCOURAGED her to have a glass of wine to relax and destress. Maybe someone who wants to sit in judgement of other Mothers and act like they have more knowlege than an Ob/Gyn has "problems" :confused3
