Drinking while pregnant--- child abuse?

I think it jusmps way of the end of the fringe to call any drinking while pregnant can be considered abuse.

I had probably 4 glasses of wine total while I was pregnant. I otherwise ate and drank in a very healthy way. OK OK, my only true craving was a hot dog piled high with onions and mustard - I tried to satisfy the craving with tofu dogs, but it only made me want the real thing even more. So I caved.

But to think a rare glass of wine (or a hot dog) would cause my fetus lsting harm is just obscure to me.

Is there any literature out there that has actual stats on infrequent alcohol use in pregnancy as it relates to FAS?

OT- has anyone seen the onesies that say "Mommy drinks because I cry..."
:rotfl:

Oh, that's news to me! I did hear it for breastfeeding though. Of course I heard it for giving the babies PB at too young of an age as well. I'll stick with what my OB said though. PB can be a very good thing to eat in the 1st trimester if you are having trouble keeping food down ;)

Well, I'm glad I was not aware of this. I mean, go ahead--take away the caffeine and the alcohol and everything else--but I love my peanut butter! And, yes, I NEED it.;)

If one more person says that a woman who has an occasional drink during pregnancy "has a problem", I'm going to put my Bloody Mary down and jump through the computer screen!!!!

:rotfl2: You really need to work on your issues, my friend. ;)

Funny how if you have a few ounces of wine once or twice during your pregnancy you get labeled a child abuser, yet those who refuse to vaccinate their children to protect them from diseases are considered to be more protective of their children.

Yep, I agree with an earlier poster. The mommy wars rage on.

ETA- my OB told me that while I was trying to get preg. not to have ANY alcohol after I knew I ovulated...I guess all Dr.'s are different!

And a good portion of the population wouldn't be here if everyone took that advice.

Steph, OT I know, but I had to tell you that your signature pic is awesome. You are so pretty, girlfriend!

Aw, thanks. My dd told me I looked like that Chris Crocker guy (of youtube) in that picture, so that makes me feel better, lol!:rotfl2:

Actually, I overlooked your pic a few times because it reminded me of an actress whose name has escaped me. It wasn't until I saw the boys in the back that I realized it was you.

I will PM you if that name ever comes to me :)

Why do I feel like anytime I post a reply you pop up?:)
As per your statement, the advice was , if you think you may be pregnant do not drink so your reply makes no sense at all...

In response to the poster who commented about not vaccinating, I believe most parents question vacc.'s for possible harmful side effects, which in my case is why I wouldn't drink while pregnant.
If people think its being uptight not to have a glass of wine, then as a former life of the party I seem to have become very uptight!:rotfl:
It seems not one poster has replied to my questions of the immediate effect of alcohol on the baby...that who this is about isn't it?:confused3
I don't feel like its a competition for the best mommy...I think it is common sense & not such a new idea to abstain from alcohol while pregnant!

Sorry, but the fact that so many people are willing to let drug companies test some of their new vaccines on their infants without long-term research (Rotateq for one) is truly frightening to me. In fact, my pediatrician will not administer Rotateq, even upon request, because he believes it has not been tested enough yet (and this guy used to work for the CDC). He also finds the chicken pox vax excessive but will do it if the parents want it. I think a lot of people blindly go by the CDC's "schedule" without doing much research, and yes, that is frightening.

Nothing in this world is without risk! I don't believe for one second that having a small glass of wine once or twice during your pregnancy is anything close to being abusive. I'd like someone to show me a case where a child was born brain damaged and has physical deformities because their mother drank a glass of wine while pregnant. And prove it was the alcohol that did it. I don't condone drinking while pregnant, but I don't believe that one glass of wine will cause damage to your fetus.

I didn't drink, smoke or do drugs during any of my pregnancies. I was the model pregnant person, and you know what? I still gave birth to two children with severe disabilities. Life is a crapshoot.

Actaully the kitty litter box is most likely over rated as well. THe chances of a woman getting sick off of that if she's had cats that are all indoor are slim to none. If the cat already passed it on, it would have happened already and therefore no big deal. You can also get your cats checked to see if they carry or not if you are really worried. Also if you wash your hands immediately after you probably aren't at risk either. It's amazing what you find out about kitty litter and pregnancy when you really take the time to research. Now my DH does it, but heck, I don't think I'd want to bend over like that now!

I agree. When the midwife told me it wasn't really that bad, I asked her to please not inform DH of that though, as I was enjoying my year off from scooping and cleaning the cat box. :thumbsup2

Ok, am I gonna be the only one to admit that drinking actually caused my pregnancy (at least one of them)? ;)

Or am I alone on a raft here?

Nope! You are not alone! When I went to the DR after finding out that I was pregnant with my first, I was horrified that I had recently been to a party and indulged, um, quite a bit. She laughed and said "How do you think most people GET pregnant? While I wouldn't do that again, don't spend the next nine months worrying about it"

All of us dream of happy healthy babies.. if you can't give your unborn child 10 months with no drinking no smoking no "drugs" :sad2: well then I dont know what to tell ya..

Yes they do change all the time! The listeria is not one that some worry about. The chances of getting it are rare. I usually only like my sandwiches grilled so it isn't much of an issue for me (currently pregnant). To make you feel better, I have not been told one thing about PB though. Not sure why people keep mentioning that one.

One thing my doctor focused more on that I actually listened to is about artificial sweeteners. Talk about a chemical that we don't always know enough about.

I like your doctor though :rotfl: Mine sides with me like that as well :p

I'm avoiding peanuts because I some of my cousins' kids have severe peanut allergies. Otherwise it's not really an issue. I have 3 friends who are due at the same time as me and they weren't told to avoid peanuts.

We are???? That's funny...I could have sworn that most people think I'm an ignorant, cruel, selfish, neglectful POS because my son is completely unvaccinated.:confused3

:rotfl:

Seriously, though. I haven't had too many people out in cyberspace (other than my crunchy mommy friends) give me warm fuzzies about not allowing my child to be vaccinated. Not that it matters to me. I know I've made the right decision for my son and don't look for outside approval. I'm just sayin'...

Also, those of us who don't vaccinate ARE trying to protect our children. We have simply come to the conclusion that vaccination is more harmful than the diseases they purport to prevent. That's all.

Now back to our regularly scheduled debate-slash-virtual fistfight over alcohol use during pregnancy.:hippie:
