Sandy-- I missed the pictures of your DD's wedding. It sounds beautiful! Can you link to the thread where you posted them?
And back on topic-- I don't think you can ever get a dress too early! One of my suitemates in college actually bought a gown *before* she met her DH. She was really confident she would get her MRS degree in college, and she did!
While that is really extreme (and yes, we totally made fun of her for it. If I had done that, I would have ended up using the dress to prop up a table like Liz Lemon on 30 Rock. ) I don't think purchasing a year in advance would be bad at all. She loved the gown and like Lynn said, there is always the chance a designer could discontinue a style. And fashion won't change that much so you don't have to worry about looking dated.
