Drawf mine train - are we setting ourselves up for disappointment?

It's obvious where Disney's priorities are right now, and they're not in to adding top notch attractions....thrill rides or not.

They have sunk ALOT of money into the next gen system and new resorts AoA, DVC at Grand Floridian and although they've spent alot of money and alot of time with the New Fantaslyand, they haven't really added all that much.

Universal is trying to steal the theme park dollars by adding attractions and Disney is trying to keep the dollars simply by keeping guests there either longer or to stop you from leaving at all with things like free dining, HUGE AP discounts for DVC owners, FP+ etc.

It is being built in Fantasyland, so I believe that anyone expecting BTMRR (or better) will be disappointed.

It depends on what you want in your vacation. We like family rides at Disney, that is one reason we continue to go. We do not go to Universal because we do not like thrill rides. I feel that Disney is truly a family vacation spot (as well as a place for big kids ;)); I would prefer they don't add thrill rides that small kids cannot do with their families.

I do agree with this, 150%. :thumbsup2

Whether Disney adds thrill rides or not, the quality of ride at Disney leaves alot to be desired. I mean, Toy Story is like Disney's version of the Beatles and it's not that great.

The new legend of Jack Sparrow is a perfect example. That attraction has some great technology, is family friendly, but is absolutely horrible. Universal just isn't putting stuff like that out right now. Their new attractions have a much bigger wow factor than Disney's, thrill or not.

both my wife and I were disappointed by Harry Potter actually, so it's all about opinion.

Best thing about Harry Potter Land is the butter beer. That drink tastes like a dessert. Love it.

I agree. It is cheaper and more cost effective for Disney to offer free dining than it is to sink money into truly significant new attractions in Orlando. I think for the Orlando market the strategy is to keep as many people as possible tied to property so they don't stray to UO. Free dining, an array of discounts, and a slow rolling FLE that has already given Disney a half-decade of respectable buzz are but three ways to do that more cheaply than really pumping up the park experience.
UO meanwhile has put its investments into attractions, and is experiencing a lot of positive energy and financial windfalls. They are eroding Disney's base and rightfully so. I won't be deserting Disney with my personal affections, but I do hope they start to get the hint someday soon and add something potent to the current park experience.

A swinging coaster is not new tech . . . . . no matter how you spin it

Hi Ppl

has anyone seen the mock-up video on youtube from the D23 event?

to me it seems like its going to be very much like Splash!. Its got all the elements of a dark ride with a "thrill" aspect at the end. from the mock up video it seems their is no direct drop on the ride, the track is pretty banked similar to the likes of test track. i dont think it will be overly thrilling as its in fantasyland, the ride is aimed at young children.

i think it will be good. if they stick to wha they know which is great audio animatronics, story and themeing they will make a brillaint ride,

alot of people keep saying MK is in need of a thrill ride, i dont think so, MK dosnt scream thrill rides to me, its about the stories and the magic to me anyways.
i always think thrill rides belong at Universal Studios. Disney needs to stick to what has worked since opening, look at jungle cruise, pirates of the carribbean, peter pan, Its a small world, haunted mansion, their all rides with audio animatronic dark rides some with a slight thrill aspect which make it intresting. thatys what disney does best, rides for everyone for every age.

just my 0.2c anyways

I agree I'm sick of every new ride that has come along needs to be a COASTER ride. You know there are people who can't stand roller coasters (like me) They need to stick to theaming not all thrill that scare you to death. The mine train could be very well done if Disney sticks to the theaming and some suspense and leave the COASTERS to Universal. I've been disappointed when they build Everest and Aero Smith both of which I will never ride. I was happy when they made Mission Space split to Orange and Green since I am a space buff but cannot do the Orange side. My 2 cents worth

There's something for everyone. Little Mermaid was the last new ride to open. I don't know if you would even call the Mine Ride a coaster, not even as high as Splash Mt.

That's 2 downer threads so far tonight for you. Maybe you need a break?

Would you be happier if the Mine Train attraction doesn't have animatronics?

:rotfl2: I find that your posts sometimes say exactly what I was thinking.

I saw a special on Disney a month ago & they showed the cars & some of the new technology. It looks really cool! :) :cool1:

Glad someone else mentioned this since I couldn't remember where I saw it. They showed the cars and some of the inside of the ride. It looks fantastic and I'm really excited for it to open.

Bingo. Disney's niche is not Thrill, it's entertainment as an entire package. I feel confident the Mine Ride will have that. So no, I foresee no disappointment.

Exactly. You can find "thrill" anywhere. Disney does magic that can't be found anywhere else.

Maybe it's just me, but I sense a LOT of anticipation for the Drawf Mine Train. I think it's been a long while since Disney dropped an awesome ride on us (this while US has done HP) and it feels like there is a pent up hunger for something really cool.

And it seems like everyone is waiting for DMT, and even though we know it's a kids coaster (given placement in Fantasyland) I still feel like people are unconsciously anticipating something awesome.

I know that I can't quite help myself and sort of unconsciously am expecting something really cool.

Could it be crazy amazing? Yes.

But that seems unlikely.

I wonder if we're just setting ourselves up for disappointment by expecting too much.

I don't think we're being set up for disappointment with this one, because our expectations were dropped significantly by the Little Mermaid attraction. If the LM attraction would have lived up to the hype and the buildup by the queue, then I'd say yes, it's possible that we're being set up.

As it is, I expect nothing more than a goofy rollercoaster that goes in and out of a mine which plays music from the movie and has giant jewels on the walls, broken track here and there, maybe a witch with a red apple here or there, and rocks back and forth a little bit.

I read somewhere that the thrill factor is in between Barnstormer and BTMRR, so it will be pretty tame.

I think comparing Disney with Universal is apples and oranges. Besides their proximity to each other (which is a big factor in people's opinions I'll admit), the two clearly have different missions, and both have something to offer.

ITA. Disney can still offer great things no matter what Universal does. Hopefully this new ride will be great.

...and I thought I remember that it was going to be between BTMRR and Space Mountain. I could be wrong though. Either way, I'm expecting a thrill factor closer to BTMRR. I love BTMRR, not because of the thrill factor, but for the theming and the fun sights during the ride and even in the queue. I expect for a ride this prevalent at Disney, the theming will be top notch. I can't wait to see that.

If I want thrill rides, we head to Cedar Point. Can anyone say Millenium Force? :scared1: Now THAT's a thrill ride.

Dan

I imagine that the 7DMT will be nothing like Barnstormer and nothing like BTMRR and will be somewhat of a swinging Snow White's Scary Adventures (w/out the ongoing spookiness) meets a log flume w/ no drops and no water and increased speed.

If it were truly 'thrilling' in the sense of BTMRR, or something similar - a ride on which people scream- then could you imagine how the ambiance of Fantasyland would immediately change?

A lot of kids wouldn't go near an attraction featuring screaming guests. A lot of adults wouldn't go near it for the same reason. Sometimes it's hard to differentiate the screams of fun and the screams of 'why oh why did I strap myself onto this thing.'

I think it will be fun, slightly fast, with lots of charm in the theme.
