Downside to buying small add on re-sale?

We met with a DVC sales associate last week while at Disney Springs. She told us we would get an 11 month booking advantage on ALL our points at either VWL (our home-210 points) or at Poly (40 point add on we were considering). She also said we could go on a waiting list for Grand Floridian if we wanted to.

After asking again and telling her that didn't sound right, she held her stance. We told her we would think about it. After calling member services and the DVC sales office directly we found we were correct on the booking window advantage and we were told there was no waiting list for Grand Floridian.

What would be the downside to purchasing a small re-sale for Grand Floridian in our same use year? We bought VWL through Disney in 2001. I know we would lose the incentive direct purchase gives, but what else?

Sorry to have you repeat this info so many times but I REALLY appreciate all the great (and accurate) info I receive when I post here.

VGF rooms require a lot of pts - a small resale (even with banking and borrowing) might not get you very far.

As you are aware, you can't mix home resort windows between your 2 contracts. VGF pts can book VGF at 11 months and VWL pts can book VWL at 11 months. At 7 months out, you can pool pts together to book whatever is available (assuming the same UY month and contracts being titled the same means that the new contract is added under the same membership.)

But if you just want a few days at VGF and plan to book early (some periods book right at 11 months) then it still could be worthwhile.

You wouldn't lose any incentives from buying resale, as you already own direct.

To clarify: you would not have the option of combining resale pts with your VWL contract for trading out for Disney cruises, Disney hotels (like YC or DLR) or Adv by Disney. I don't really consider those options to have any real value, though.

The lower upfront price of resale more than makes up for any financial incentives/discounts offered for direct sales.

I didn't even consider the cruise, Adv by Dis, etc as incentives when I was thinking about it... LOL

Biggest incentive is AP's (IMO), and you get it already with your directs

sorry to jump on this, but we are in the same boat. We want to buy 4 small 50 point contracts for each of our kids. Am I understanding this correctly that if we do this via resale they can not get discounted AP?

Are there any other negatives or possible future implications that anyone can think of? Does anyone know for sure or believe we might be able to buy a small add on at Grand Floridian direct through Disney? DVC Sales rep said yes but sales center said no.

Your rep has already lied to you. I wouldn't put much faith in her being able to sell a VGF contact.

That said; if there's an appropriately-sized VGF contact sitting on the ROFR desk at the very moment you commit to buy, then she might be able to sell it to you. But that seems unlikely.

We are keeping VGF, VWL, and BWV and selling the rest. All have the same UY and we alternate our yearly or more split stays while banking the extra points.

That gives us an Epcot and DHS resort and 2 MK area resorts.

DVD changes their sales policies like the wind. Waitlist for sold out resorts, no waitlist, increased ROFR, everything goes through. Just find a good guide and buy direct if you want or start relationships with resale brokers to find the perfect resale contract(s).

Thanks for all the good information. We may check back to see if we can find a direct VGF sale. If not will consider resale

Has this actually been confirmed?

All I know is what I read in the paper...

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/busi...embership-benefits-resale-20160404-story.html

Starting today (April 4, 2016), "members who do not purchase an ownership interest directly from Disney Vacation Development Inc. will not have access to Membership Extras," the company says on its website.

Membership extras include discounts on merchandise, annual passes and restaurants. They also include access to a lounge opening soon at Epcot, a sweepstakes, and special events such as movie screenings, a member cruise and a recent party at the Magic Kingdom.

Anything that discourages using points for cash exchange options and makes one think about the real LOW value of doing so is a good thing IMO. One who gets the discount for any reason loses nothing of value buying resale whether they already own or buy resale and add on say 25 points as long as that option remains in place.

You would not get the discounts it appears. Personally I would discourage paying extra for such a legacy situation. If you can find a single contract already structured that way then it's a good choice. Buying resale for 4 times 50 points will be roughly $3000-3500 more than a single 200 point contract for most situations. The changes of 4 children wanting DVC, being able to afford it and being good managers for a timeshare are extremely low. Plus finding 4 contracts that match up now like that is going to be difficult. I'd discourage going this route unless one can do so as a single entity resale.

All you can do is try but recent reports suggest it's possible. Likely the best bet is to try for VGF for a smaller contract or possibly to consider CC since you already own at BR.

Dean, do you have a guess as to when they will start selling CC?

The paper left out some very important works from the official document. "Certain" discounts are restricted. I can't imagine how your waiter or cashier would deny a discount when you show your member ID card.

Resale purchasers after the change do not get a member ID card. They get a digital Member ID.

Sorry, I really don't. There are others who have a much better feel for how the timeline went with the last couple of projects (VGF & Poly).

Who told you that? I'm under the impression they still get an ID card, but it's a different color. Plus, the digital card should be valid for discounts
