In 2001, my son starting throwing up at the airport. We thought it was either Dunkin Donuts at 5am or jittery nerves, since we were flying after 911. Got to MCO ok, but was unable to check into our resort. I "forced" my son to hang out at the pool, we were at Disney, but he was not happy. I kept bugging the CMs about our room, because our child was ill - I think we got in to our room about 2pm, after a 2 hour wait.
There was a maintenance person leaving our room, as we were arriving. I asked how can I access medical care - they did not know, other than to push the medical button on our phone. Within 10 minutes Disney rescue showed up. The poked and proded my son, but he did not complain to them - they said he was dehydrated and left.
I still did not feel well, so I took him to quick care, by down town disney. After about 90 minutes there, they said, it has to be his appendix and told us to go to the celebration hospital. So off we go. The quick care called ahead, so when we arrived, they started an IV and fluids, while they were taking my insurance information and copay.
To make a long story short, about 10pm, they said it was his appendix and he was in the OR by 5am.
Everything went well. Disney was very nice to us, once we let the front desk know what what happening. They gave our son so much stuff.
The one thing I was saddened to find out - those with disabilities are often frowned upon by other guests. We had comments about the wheel chair on the disney buses. While our son could transfer and walk without problems, he had no endurance and needed the wheelchair. My son decided that we should stay vs returning hom. My husband had to say many times, this kid had his appendix out a couple of days ago - then people would shut up and look the other way.
Needless to say, we returned to the world with a few months after this trip, so all could enjoy.
I will say, we were advised to go to the Celebration Hospital vs Orlando City Hosp. The Celebration Hospital was soooooo nice. The staff was equally nice. I would not hesitate to return. Plus, I would bypass the quick care. Quick care does not accept insurance cards and we had to pay about $225 before we left. An ER copay is much cheaper.
