Hi everybody. I need help/advice on explaining Christmas to my DS(3). My wife and I are not sure about how to handle the Santa Clause issue. My wife and I never grew up believing in Santa Clause. In both our families, Santa Clause was just part of the Christmas decoration, kind of like ghosts and witches on Halloween. But sometimes I think that maybe I missed out on some of the Christmas fun by not believing in Santa Clause.

TIA...

Michael:santa:

We both grew up with Santa, although I had a neighbor tell me the truth when I was 5 years old - when I asked, my mom was honest - then we pretended until I left home ;) It was fun, and the true meaning of Christmas was always first in our home.

When we had our boys, we started with Santa Claus, because it is fun! Well, when our oldest, Ryan was 5, he came to me and said, "Mom, I want to ask you something, and I want you to tell me the truth. I don't want you to lie to me, and I don't want you to ask me what I think. Now, is there really a Santa Claus, or not?" :rotfl2: What do you say to that?

I told him the truth, and that we would have fun pretending - and so we have! My sister doesn't do Santa, because she felt her kids would feel bad that they had been lied to. I think it depends on how you explain it. :confused3

We're seeing it a week from Saturday and I'm SOOOO excited! We've never seen it before either but our friends in Orlando (Hey HoagiePie!!!) were able to score a dinner package at Germany and then seating at the show.....and after the show another friend of ours who works at Epcot and is actually IN the processional got us VIP seats for Illuminations. Epcot is not even usually my favorite of the WDW parks....but I expect it to be a highlight this year!!!

Ooooh, have fun! It really is wonderful. The choir is awesome, and the lights are great, and it makes me all teary. I'm such a sap. You'll love it!

Hi Eveyrone. I have been offline for a couple of days because we took a mini vaction of sorts. The kids were taking part in a simulated city which is the culimination of weeks of economics study. The town with the city in it is about an hour and a half from here so and they had to be there two days in a row. So, Dave took vacation days and we all went and stayed in a hotel overnight. Dave and I got to Christmas/birthday shop and just relax together while the kids did their simulation.

My kids are pretty tough to shop for this year (both have birthdays Christmas week so we have extra to get). They are such abnormal little beings:lmao: Here is Rio's letter to Santa:

Dear Santa,
I usually like the things you think of for me that I never even knew I wanted so that would be best. But Mommy says I really should give you some ideas. Mostly I want a dart borad and CDs. Here are CDs I want:
Cabaret
Nickelback
Hairspray
Grease Broadway
Grease Movie
Maroon 5
Wicked
Have a good month with the elves
Rio

:lmao: :lmao: Yeah, that's what every little boy who is about to turn 9 wants! And those are the ONLY things he has thought to ask for from anyone at all:rotfl2: Marika is not any easier. The only things she can think of that she really wants are sealing wax and a seal and a calligraphy set:rotfl: I DID manage to find a stationary shop in Portsmouth which still carries sealing wax and seals. Luckily Santa knows these kids will love a karaoke machine (they adore karaoke on DCL) and just don't know you can get them to ask for one. I am a bit worried becuase it will be the first time we ever give them one gift frm Santa to share (instead of one each) but I think they will be fine with that and they will have their stockings (yep, some of Rio's CDs will be in there). But now I am done with shopping (and we had to buy for both sets of grandparents who just sent $$ and asked me to buy) except for picking up giftcards. I need mini golf and movie gift cards for Rio (pretty normal) and Land's end and the fancy cheese shop for Marika (yes, CHEESE--I'm tellin' ya my kids are just a bit off kilter:lmao: )

Hadley, I love it! My favorite part was "have fun with the elves" :thumbsup2
He needs to talk to my little sisters, for real. I talked to them the other day, and the 8 year old (my Mom got a late second start, I'm 32) told me she wanted me to get her a pink Nintendo DS (yeah, sure sweetie....) and the 12 year old wants a laptop! :scared1:
I was like, "how about a nice book or something?" :upsidedow

Like Tammie's son, Ryan, I too (being the oldest) asked my mom when I was 5 if there was Santa and the Easter Bunny. I saw the Easter Bunny busy at work that Saturday night. From there on out, I became Peter Cottontail's sidekick and Santa's elf until my younger brother became older. This then allowed me some joys and pleasure at my young age knowing that I had a secret from my brother, and I got to be a part of it.

I'm not sure if part of the reasons for your upbringing were based on any religious beliefs or not, however, I'll share with you what my DB does with his five kids now. At first, they started out not acknowledging Santa with their kids. However, as they got a little older, they realized that their kids were missing out on some of the joys of childhood, not to mention causing signficant disruptions with other kids at pre-school/school with their debates. Therefore, they've taught them about the REAL St. Nicholas and how this real man who once lived was so generous. My DB and DSIL also have started this tradition where Jesus leaves each of the kids one gift under the tree that has some signficant meaning to the child.

double post...

Hey, a VWL owner on our cruise! There is a great thread over on the DVC misc board that you need to check out! (VWL groupies :thumbsup2 ).

As far as Santa, no kids, no can help except that I was led to believe that there was a Santa and I turned out OK :rotfl2: .

I had a hard time with Santa for a few years with the focus being on him instead of what Christmas is, but I found a really neat statue of Santa kneeling over Jesus in the manger and I love Santa all over again!:santa:

Hadley---

You know I love you dearly but I just want to go on record RIGHT NOW saying that if "Santa" does not buy Rio a copy of the WICKED soundtrack for Christmas, I might just have to come snatch that poor child up and raise him in my own home where he can listen to as much Elphaba and Glinda as he likes!!!! :lmao:

We will move to the local Time Zone when we cross "the line".

Thanks Kimberly. I was reading excursion reviews on CC and someone mentioned ship time and when booking excursions that are not done through the cruise line to be aware of that ship time and local time could be different.

Thanksgiving update:

Thanks for asking how my First Hosted Thanksgiving went! In one word....it went fantastic! The only hitch was that we almost didnt' have a turkey. The oil for the fryer wouldn't heat up & my Dad didn't bother to check and see if it was heating or not. So it sat in the cold of outside for over an hour, while the oil was supposed to be boiling hot & ready for a turkey. He did find the reset button & it worked...and we only at 1/2 hour later than planned. Not bad!

For a peek into our day, you can check out our family blog & the movie I made:

I hope everyone is doing well this week!

Not really due to religious beliefs. I think it was due to where we spent our early childhood. My wife was born in Bolivia and Santa is not really a popular character there. I was born in the Philippines, but spent my early years in Nigeria. Nigeria was definitely not a place you would find Santa. It was hard enough finding a suitable Christmas tree.

It's either that, or my parents just didn't want to share credit for the presents. When we received presents, they made sure we knew who gave it to us.

Ok, fellow geeks, I need help shopping for Jeremy. Yeah, I -know- I said I was done... I took inventory today and I had nothing in the closet for him. Oooooops!!!

Soooo.... which is cooler? A trebuchet or a catapult? I'm leaning towards the trebuchet, but you can load a catapult easier...

Oh, and description for these actually states to not target anything living... Whhhhat?

ETA: He's getting a catapult. Man, Thinkgeek is addictive! They have stocking stuffers!

DEB and I are working on plans for a New Years Eve cruise for '09 into '10. Please take a ton of pix. and post them so I can show her. We own a parcel of land in Laural DE. where we plan to build our retirement home in a few years. "lower slower Del." they call it:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I have been trying to get some of our fellow cruisers from the May repo cruise to join us on this one as well.

O I will take lots of pictures. We are also going to the Candlight Processional the night before great way to start our vacation.

We are very familiar with Laurel "in slower lower DE" we have a mobile home in PotNets in the Millsboure area. We are heading down tomorrow to close up until the spring. Hopefully, the snow they are predicting for tomorrow night won't come to far south.

You don't have punkin' chunkin' near you? That's how we know Halloween is coming... the pumpkins are being shot out of air cannons, trebuchets, and catapults over an empty field! :rotfl: :thumbsup2 Massive pumpkin carnage! Seeds flying everywhere! Big bada BOOM!

Seriously, the choices were between desk-size kits to put together. From his friends, the catapult was seen as preferred. So he's getting a catapult.

I have to get on there and get some SS for my husband. I still have no idea what "main present" to get him. This isn't like me, I'm normally done by now! Thanks for the reminder!

Did you see "Candy Corn Cannibalism" on shirt.w00t? :rotfl2: And then I also got him "How to Track Pirates, Ninjas, and Zombies"... Oh, my! The current shirts aren't so wonderful, but I am still chuckling over those 2.

Hope that helps!
