So we had an utterly geeky evening here doing one of our favourite Friday night activities: Laser Show in the dining room. Lest you are ever so slightly less geeky than us, I offer a brief set of directions:
1. Remove your speaker cover.
2. Tape a small (think quarter siezed) mirror to the woofer so that it is aimed at the ceiling (electrical tape seems to hold fairly well).
3. Place a laser pointer in a tripod and aim it at the mirror.
4. Turn the pointer on and be sure the dot from the laser pointer is showing up about mid ceiling.
5. Pop in a CD with a good, strong baseline (Blue Man Group works great), turn out the lights, crank up the volume and enjoy the show on the ceiling.
Yep, totally geeky and we love it! D seemed to enjoy it also. Oh, and KLFs the White Room track #8 had a fanbulous repeating baseline so you can show a budding young geek how the visaul and the audio are linked (you get a repeating pattern on the ceiling).

DH: Cool!

I was thinking of the music... I think we have both, but I might be thinking KLM, not KLF... "KLM is going to rock you"? Help me out by quoting a lyric, please?

Brandie

When I was in High School in the 70's (shut up), my neighbor was a classically trained piano and organ prodigy and electronics nut.

He and I did light show in his garage while he played the organ.

We took a balloon and glued it around a speaker attached to his amplifier, glued a mirror on the balloon and aimed his home-made-from-a-kit Argon laser at it.

I think there was smoke in the garage as well :hippie:

That was a LONG time ago...

He now holds several electronic patents and lives in Italy.

You know, there's a place somewhere in WDW where you can get a potato body & then stuff it w/all the different kinds of body parts/accessories the inside will hold. The shop had lots of 'themed' type accessories. Then you pay just one set price. I think its in Downtown Disney, but not positive about that. Got the info either from Mousesavers.com or The Unofficial Guide.

Around Christmas this past year, there was a line of Star Wars themed potato heads, including Darth Tater. Cute, cute! My dad got one of those from me for a Chrismas gift. :)

They do this in the toy store at Downtown Disney. Also at the shop in DinoLand USA in AK. I know I saw it at MK also but can't remmeber where (oh and POP's gift shop). ALL of them that I saw do the by the box thing.

DH wiki'd KLF for me... Time Lords people? Pretty cool!

Brandie

Brandie you have the right group, but the name is KLF. Lyricis "KLF is gonna rock you uh huh uh huh" ANY good, strong baseline works well. It's fun to try out lots of different things.

FatherForce--sounds like GOOD times when you were younger:rotfl2:

Okee... I know the Tardis song a bit better. At least I was in the right genre.

FatherForce: *chuckle*

Man the board is busy tonight! :)

My plans for the weekend?? Think :fish: . I'm driving to my mom's tomorrow (she's going to be on the cruise, too), and we're going to spend the weekend making Fish Extenders together. I'm so excited. I started making several a few weeks ago, and it gave me (hold back the laughter) tennis elbow. My fish extenders gave me tennis elbow!!!
Yesterday was the first day it wasn't actually *hurting*. Now I have just a little discomfort. I'll just leave the material cutting with a rotary blade to her this round. A challenge ahead: somehow I'm going to have to decide on which one I want! Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Well can you tell I haven't been to the World in a few years? So it sounds like a "Build-A-Bear (scratch that) Potatohead" store. I'm thinking I might have to get to DTD the night before the cruise! Tink would look great in my cube at work with all my other Tinkerbell items!

:lmao: You're killing me! Who thinks of this stuff?!! It's very cool though! Good old fashioned cheap entertainment! :3dglasses

Wow, that's some trippin' stuff. Making your own laser light shows! Cool.

I've known some folks in the past that that sort of stuff was right up their alley. One's an electrical engineer who designed some original battery operated, audio-driven products that he & his buddies patented. The other is my ex-BIL. He designed custom sound systems for cars, trucks, etc. Using physics, he determined the optimal box design to get the best sound out of sets of speakers - the custom boxes folks put into their cars. Both thought about stuff in ways TOTALLY different than I'm able to think.

Hats off to those folks.

Conversation I just had with DH:

Me: Hey, don't we have a partially blown speaker downstairs?
DH: Uh, yeah, why?
Me: I was thinking of the...
DH: *quickly catching my drift and using it to his own advantage* Laser show? YES, we have a partially blown speaker that work for that if it would get me new speakers....

:rotfl:

Thanks, guys, for single-handedly costing me a couple thousand for cheap Friday entertainment... *groan*

My plans for this weekend: I will be avoiding any mall with a Bose or that more expensive Swedish speaker place LIKE THE PLAGUE.... *argh*

Okay, Brandie...your husband should be so thankful you talked him into this cruise now! (assuming he GETS his new speakers) Ya never know what you'll learn here that can be to your advantage (DH) or break your wallet (Brandie)! :rotfl:

He chuckled at your post. You're a turncoat, ya know that? :rotfl:

He's been after new speakers/home entertainment center since he saw our house's previous owner's setup in the basement... I've been drug through the Bose store thousands of times... And yet have not succumbed yet. I'm proud of that record. It will take more than the possibility of home-grown laser shows to break me!!! :rotfl:

Brandie

Oh, and the current 4 speaker setup offends his sensibilities... The back 2 little speakers have fake wood veneers and sit on the floor!

He wants the whole bit, tiny speakers on the walls, everything.

Anybody pipe up and agree with his choices and how wonderful they sound and they're getting the hairy eyeball from me!

OOOOOOOOOOooooooooo..........I want to see that icon. popcorn::

:rotfl2: I'm laughing so hard at this last string of posts! First off, you can use perfectly good speaker for a lasr show and not damage them. Dave does this on his (it's not ours) Linn Speakers. The only thing he considers more valuable than those speakers is the kids (and I am not entirely sure he considers them more valuable, but I like to delude myself and pretend he does:lmao: ).

Dave was smart enough to know way back when that there was NO WAY I was going to let him spend ridiculous amounts of $$$$ of speakers and the like. So, he bought the whole kit and caboodle while we were engaged (ie--BEFORE we got married). The darn speaker CABLES cost more than the car I drove in college! (I admit I drove a Yugo--I was in college--but even still!). I think it was $600 on the cables (and that was almost 15 years ago). Then there are the special granite bases which keep the speakers from vibrating as much and have little spikes on the bottom which pierce right into my floor:scared1: I suggest bargaining for a VERY large number of cruises and spa treatments before you give in on a high end stereo and/or speakers. Bad idea to get me started on being a "stereo widow."

*sigh* *shaking my head* You know, you're not helping here... I'd have to pay real money to save those "hundreds" you mention so casually... :rotfl:

And there's no way I'm letting the man loose on EBay again. Oi vey! He finds things he KNOWS I'd fall for, then tells me (in passing, oh so casually) how little they're being auctioned for. Like a NeXT box, color monitor, etc. "Only" 1500, hon. *mutter* Crazy person. I only spend that much if it involves a mouse.. A LIVING mouse, that is!

:rotfl:

The other weakness he preys on is my admiration for quality kimonos. He got passed a website that sells used, quality ones for an amazing prize. As in "only" several hundred to low figure thousands. Yeah, we haven't bought anything, but not for lack of drooling.

*wave* I need to get to calling Home Depot and seeing about replacement sprinkler heads. That's our to do for today.

Hadley, thanks for the great idea! My son can't wait to try it!!:thumbsup2

I just got my newly purchased WDW "play-3-days" passes in the mail today! Wooooo-hooo!!!:yay: The plan is to experience Xmas at the World, (if we can wait that long to use them...:rolleyes1 ) I managed to snag some Candlelight Processional package ressie's last week and now I'm starting to plan MVMCP....exciting! If anyone has ever been, I would be interested in any advice. We plan on doing MVMCP after a day at MGM (so we can catch Osborne lights too) and then spend a separate day at MK. I don't have tickets yet though...hope I'm not too late......:santa:

Happy weekend everyone!!:goodvibes
