Dorian expected to strengthen to Cat 3 Hurricane

I don’t think anyone really knows what this storm is going to do. It’s scary.

Not to mention those Cone of Uncertainty maps are showing where the eye (and worst hit) could go. That’s still a lot of wind and rain over the entire peninsula even if the eyewall stalls off the coast.

Farther north, I remember a lot of the flooding damage from Sandy came from hanging off the coast and not hitting land right away.

My only concern is that this decides not to turn and comes straight at Florida. I know chances at that happening are slim but it's possible.

Well the latest is that it has stalled over Grand Bahama and basically is waiting for some directional force to push it one way or another .... Seems most likely is push it north up the coast but going back west more can certainly happen

That is a big concern now that if it just runs up the coast it could last longer and impact more areas via coastal impact and inland flooding and perhaps cause more damage in total than if it came ashore somewhere (obviously would be more deviation in that spot, but more confined)

Orange County (WDW area) is under a tropical storm watch. Pressure has increased and sustained speeds are nudging downward, but still at major CAT 5 category. We wait for that hopeful turn expected tonight.

Everyone here in central Florida is tired of her stalking us for days.

I’ve had significant damages from storms that just hang off the coast. The rains saturate the ground and root systems, and the wind pushes over the trees. I had a detached garage leveled, fencing destroyed, and been without power for long periods. And I consider myself lucky. Here in Jacksonville, Irma blew by with her surge at high tide and pushed water up the St. John’s River basin, resulting in lots of local flooding. Direct hits are horrible. I hate to think what the people on Grand Bahama are going through now. But, yes, the storms that run up the coast suck too.

ETA: streaming Bahamas radio now. Here's the link if anyone is interested:

@SaintsManiac - Many thanks for the link to Bahamas radio. Been listening for the past half hour. Truly a lesson in the power of these storms. Prayers for the residents of those islands, and also a prayer for the emergency workers manning the centers and supporting so many in a very dangerous time.

Rather quiet day at WDW so far.

Thought this post had a really interesting map that shoes ocean surface temperatures and you can see how Dorian kicks up deeper, cooler water towards the surface (very clearly illustrates the path the storm has taken). This, combined with it's stalling, with result in the size of the storm expanding meaning that even if a landfall does not occur in Florida, hurricane like wind and rainfall are likely to be felt inland

Well, the first rain/thunder band made it's way to us and it went from zero to blinding in mere seconds. Now the waiting game for the turn truly begins.....

Orange County Convention Center is now emergency operations center for the crews coming from Tampa. I-4 construction crews in Orlando are finishing removal of materials/debris that may act as projectiles.
