DON'T Read This TRIP REPORT If You're a Princess Hater!

I don't even know where to begin. Those picture are all so awesome. The everest in the fog is just to ocool. I love it. And those Nemo shots are awesome. I have never seen the show either. Now I really want to, just to take pictures.
It's looking like you are making the best of a crappy day. It's disappointing, but what can you do but just try to have fun.

WOW!!! I haven't caught up yet, but had to stop and say your Nemo shots are AWESOME!!!!!!

Thank you! :goodvibes Put me in front of a beautiful Disney show with my DSLR and I'm happy as a clam.

I agree that the pictures of Expedition Everest and the cue, in the rain, are stunning, I really like the wide angle shot! One of these days I am going to see a show there too. In the the fours time I have been to AK since it opened I have never seen a show. I know I know its a crime right?! Shoot I've never even made it to Camp Mickey, blasphemy I KNOW!

OH and Janet... no worries on the skirt  I understand :sad2: I can see now I am low on the totem of importance and its cool, really . I'll get over it but don't worry I will keep reading and won't stop being your friend over it :headache:. I'm just kidding its cool :rotfl: I didn't actually expect you to say yes (thinking to myself, yes I did :headache:, I sound convincing right?). Though what is funny to me is that you thought you needed to make something adult looking... I WANT one that looks just like your daughters skirts only my size :thumbsup2, which considering hwo small I am you would probably just hav eto make the waist bigger :rotfl:. Don't belive me I'd want one like that? Just ask Jenn it is totally me, I'd wear it even at home and not WDW. I'm a big nerd and walk to the beat ofmy own drummer... has no one told you this yet ? Below I have attached what my future could look like if Jenn can get this skirt thing figured out, thoughI have to be honest I was more hoping for a skort, but details shmetails. But really look how happy I look with it; it wasn't best shirt choice that day, plus I had to turn my shirt B&W to match ( do you knwo how hard that is to do!), plus change the color of the skirt (even harder!), but again all detail that can be adjusted in the design process :lmao:

happy.jpg

LOL! You're killing me!

First, thanks for the kind comments on the photos.

Second....... you've never seen a SHOW at AK????? :scared1: But then, the shows are what I love most about Disney. Festival of the Lion King is absolutely spectacular!

Third......... No Camp Minnie Mickey?????? :scared1: But.... but..... that's where all the characters are! :confused3 You'll have to make sure you get to CMM in December since it's the only place at WDW outside MVMCP that the characters appear in Christmas outfits.

Fourth......... I'm so glad you understand about the skirt/top set. I mean.... you took it really well......... :rotfl2: The problem is that any time I work something up in a size range I don't usually do, I don't like to do it by email. Just no way to know for sure how it's working out until I see it ON. And fitting an adult woman's figure is different from fitting a little girl......... no matter how skinny you are! :) Don't feel bad though. My husband asks me all the time to shorten his pants, and I don't do that either!

Fifth......... how adorably CUTE are you in that photo? I see what you mean about the skirt. It's certainly reminiscent of what I made Katie. And I love that you are your own person and go with what makes you happy. I'm much the same way. Did I mention I have my own Fairy Godmother costume?????? :rolleyes1

Your pictures are amazing! If you don't mind me asking...what camera do you use? Your daughter is soo precious, she looks great in her costumes. ;)

Hi there and :welcome:

Many thanks for the kind words!

I have a Canon T2i.

Wow! Reading about your AK day was almost creepy, since I already know we were there at the same time and everything!! I noticed I am not in any of your pictures! I know what you mean about Everest, we had the same experience with the razor sharp water drops! We did Safari right after TH too, but we went to FOTLK next, then Everest. Nemo was a nice way to get out of the rain! Thanks for helping me reminisce!

I'm telling you, it really WAS funky finding myself in one of your photos. What are the ODDS???? Too bad you haven't shown up in any of mine yet.

The thing about Everest is that it really felt like it had almost stopped raining at all...... but it didn't take much at that speed to make it sting!

I think a lot of folks had the same idea about wanting to miss the rain by seeing the indoor shows. I was really surprised at how packed the theater was when we got inside.

Your Nemo pictures are hands down the best I have ever seen! They are gorgeous! Can you tell me in general what kind of settings you use for stuff like that. I could never get a decent shot of that show when we saw it a few years ago. The combo of low light, lots of motion, various lighting on stage, etc. was just beyond me. If you could just tell me some basics for shooting performances I would be very grateful. We plan to see Nemo again this year and we will be seeing a show each night on the Dream as well and I need a few pointers. :flower3:

I also think your EE pictures are awesome! You were right, the rain and fog made for an awesome set up! It looks so real!!! I love it!

So glad that you trudged on even though the rain made it less than perfect! Can't wait to see more pictures from you. I think AK is a beautiful park and you have done a great job capturing it!

Thank you! :) I really felt cheated out of the chance to photograph the park with the rain falling like it did. It seemed so odd to actually put my camera in my backpack for a while that morning. But there were enough covered or indoor things that it never stayed put away for long. I like to push the envelope with my equipment, but man...... I had just gotten that camera and I was a little concerned I might have pushed my luck too far.

I used my Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 for shooting the Nemo show. This is what is known as a "fast" lens that is capable of a large aperture for low light situations. Here's what I did:

1) Shutter Priority. I wanted to shoot just fast enough to cleanly stop the action. I chose 1/160 to hit close to the inverse of the max focal length of 150.

2) 1600 ISO. My camera goes higher, but in a dark setting like that I get a lot of noise. I thought 1600 might be right and I was happy with it.

3) Here's the important part when shooting a brightly lit show in a dark theater like this. I used spot metering. If you use the regular setting (called evaluative metering by canon) it balances out the light over the entire frame. Since there's so much black, it bumps the exposure up to compensate, and ends up OVERexposing the subjects on stage. With SPOT metering , it balances out the exposure in just a small area in the center of the frame.

4) I also dialed down my exposure compensation 2/3 of a stop. This allows a slightly faster shutter speed, and if the shot is too dark, that can be brought back up in processing later.

By shooting in shutter priority, I chose the shutter speed, and the camera filled in the appropriate aperture. I just checked the info on several photos and the aperture ended up all over the place, from wide open at 2.8 all the way up to 9.0. So while the wide aperture was really helpful on a couple shots, it's still possible to get some good shots with a zoom that doesn't open as wide.

Thanks Jen! :) I did feel cheated to be at AK in the rain, mostly because it was the one park with uncharted photographic territory for me! But also because it was our last full park day, and I wasn't ready for the photography fun to be over yet. And besides, I thought we had already paid the bad weather gods earlier in the week! Someone defintely needs to let those bad weather gods know I'm DUE for good weather in December this year!

I'm glad I'm motivating you to see Nemo. Honestly, I was really "ehh" about seeing it. But it's a nice little show, even without a camera in your hands.

Just keep swimming.......... just keep swimming.........;)

Thanks for reminding about metering. I always forget and never change it. I need to keep that in mind in the future too.

Just don't forget to change it back when the show's over!

Before I learned about metering, I never understood why every face on every actor/singer/skater in any show I had photopraphed was really washed out. That one step made a HUGE difference is photographing shows like this.

YEP...Even though I think I took spectacular show photos, many of the faces are washed out. I neeed to remember this for next time.

So ::giggle:: I couldn't tell from your post if you knew that the skirt I'm wearing is Katie's :lmao: I photoshopped that together. So when I said I had to make my shirt B&W I meant I used the sponge tool in photoshop to take the green out of my shirt, in reality it is green. I also literally changed the hue of the skirt since I didn't think I looked good in red and green with that top, the purple went more with the Halloween theme in the photo :rotfl:

:rotfl: You have way to much time on your hands...want edit some pictures for me? LOL!

This is probably the number one reason I stay in auto so much! :lmao: I always seem to forget to change my settings back! I did that last time at Epcot. I had changed my settings to take nighttime photos around WS lagoon, and then forgot to change it back when we went inside the store in Japan to do pick-a-pearl! I was soooooo mad with myself when I got home and saw what I did, b/c that was something that I had been really excited about doing and all the pictures were terrible! :sad1: I'm just so excited and distracted while I'm at Disney that I have sensory overload and can't stay focused I guess!

Anyway, I also need to give you a BIG thank you for the show photographing tips! I was expecting a sentence or two, but you really detailed it out! :worship: I'm going to have to print out your answer and practice! I'm not even sure I can do all that with my camera but I am going to give it shot anyway. Thank you again!

Jen, your show photos really are spectacular! To be honest, one of the things I look for on show pictures is how the faces are exposed, and I honestly didn't see that problem in what you posted.

OK, I feel REALLY stupid now! LOL! :rotfl::lmao::rotfl2:

Give this girl a prize for creativity and completely stumping me. I thought it looked amazingly similar to Katie's, but got lost in the part about you making the top black and white. You're really very good at that by the way...... VERY impressive.........:thumbsup2

:rotfl: You have way to much time on your hands...want edit some pictures for me? LOL!

Man Jen, what would you give to be able to do that sort of editing? I'm pretty sure I'd give up one of my kids for that...... but then it's summer and they're all treading on my last nerve anyway........:lmao:

No problem at all. I love chatting photography, but then you guys could probably figure that out by now...... just don't get me started on sewing tips........:scared1:

I still struggle A LOT with remembering to change my settings back after a given setting. I bought a DSLR when they first broke the $1000 barrier in 04. I've had several Rebel models through the years. And I never ventured out of Auto or Program modes (Program is just like auto, but you can control the flash and ISO). I didn't really start to venture in to the other modes until fall of 09. Even NOW though....... I still find myself forgetting to change them back. Why? All those years of just picking up the camera and hitting the button........... Just too hard to break. But you know what? I'm finally getting over the hump with it. (Knock wood). But even now...... it still happens.

One thing I did for a while was try to turn the mode dial to Program every time I left a particular setting. I think it's a good default, and it's easier to remember to do something when you're DONE in a certain setting than when you're in a hurry to get started.

Thanks Jenn! Too bad you can't see them all though. I'm sure if you were REALLY dedicated, you'd go camp out at the library and wait for my updates. The kids could just run around helping the other patrons while you surf............ :surfweb:
Or I could save everyone's ear drums and go to my parent's house...

Is this your way of saying we won't see any of YOUR shots from your most recent trip until fall? Did you get the word on your position for the new year yet?
I've pulled all of my pictures for the TR and written out everything we did so I wouldn't forget what all happened. It's just a matter of getting pictures online so I can copy things over.

We are in the middle of remedying that whole dial-up issue. Comcast cable internet is our only option right now. DSL is not. :( I called the number in our phone book for Comcast the other day and found out, after 5 blocked phone calls, a barage of emails and text messages, that the number in our phone book is actually a 3rd party dealer that contracts with Comcast. :scared1: All they have done is harass me starting 2 hours after first contact. I spent over an hour on the phone with the executive office at the real Comcast getting their calls blocked, but Lord only knows who these other schisters have sold my info too. :sad2: I'm so mad! All I know is that after talking to the people in the executive office, that 3rd party distributer is in deep doo-doo.

We did find out that if we got our home phone, internet, and required modem rental from Comcast, that it's about $15 cheaper than what we are currently paying for phone and dial-up. DH and I haven't had enough time together in the last week to sit down and make a decision though. Hopefully it will come soon!

As for the fall, I probably won't get any notice until the first of August :faint:. I am going to go out on a limb and send an email to our newly instated Director of Human Resources who was previously the Athletic Director and someone I dealt with relatively regularly. I'm going to ask if he can assign me to DS's school in the fall so I don't have to worry about before and after-school childcare. Worst he can say is no.

As for AK....... we like it a lot. It just always seems to be odd man out. I hope to make up for lost time with it in coming trips. As you might see, we love the MK so much, everything else pretty much just needs to fit in around that for us. And keep in mind, until this trip, Katie didn't do thrill rides, so EE and Dinosaur were out, so it sort of dropped down on our "must do" park list. We're definitely going again this year. I'm really hoping for a prettier day for photography there!
Fair enough. I may be kicked out of here, but MK is starting to fall as my favorite park! I love EP, then MK... AK is next being that there are a lot of places to escape there that most people purposely avoid. Even on nutty days, we can slip into one of the animal trails and get our heads together! I don't care for Dinosaur - I much prefer the Indiana Jones version at DLR. I'm getting too old to be bounced around like that anymore. At least with Jones, there's a cute doctor as part of the story! :rotfl:

LUV LUV LUV the Tusker House update. I've booked that for our next trip. Bummer bout all the rain but at least you kept going and had fun and so cool you got a nearly private photoshoot with the monkeys and baloo!

Wow! Magnificent! I am an aspiring photographer and I WISH I could take as good quality photos as you do! What kind of camera do you have? I have an Olympus E400, and although I get pretty good photos, I want much better quality! I am also a character hunter, so we would get along great! I LOVE all of Katie's outfits! One day I have vowed to sew pretty dresses for my daughters :)

So am I the least bit surprised, let alone shocked........ that you were treated poorly and given the runaround by Comcast? My kids head for the hills any time I have to call them now. They don't want to even hear my frustration. I actually got a call from someone doing a survey on Comcast recently. You know the drill..... rate them from 1 to 10 on value, service, yadda yadda yadda......... Let's just say I was honest........:rolleyes1 We seem to go hot and cold with them. The price is ALWAYS too high, but the service is good, then not so good, then good again, that sort of thing.

BUT........ I could never go back to dial-up. And what are the alternatives?

I do hope you hear something earlier than expected on your position in the fall. Limbo is the worst state of all.

Now on to the serious matter of your diminishing love of the Magic Kingdom....... :scared1: I just am having trouble with this. I mean....... it has a CASTLE and all........ :rotfl2: Maybe I need to take a vote on kicking you off our island here.... Actually, I'm not looking to replace my love for the Magic Kingdom, but I AM hoping to more fully develop a relationship with Animal Kingdom. Because of the rain, we didn't get to do either of the animal trails, so we are really looking forward to it this trip. You know......... weather allowing.....

I can see how the MK might fall a bit in someone's eyes after being to Disneyland though. That really is my favorite park of all. AND it has a castle. It's a little small for my taste..... but it does the trick in a pinch. I'm hoping the Fantasyland Expansion renews some of my own love of the MK. But I also wonder at times if it will. After all, it's REALLY only one additional ride (Little Mermaid). Belle's village will be great, but it's really just Belle's Storytime and a restaurant and a shop, right? The mine coaster will be cool, but it comes at the cost of losing another ride, and I think it's a LONG ways off.

LUV LUV LUV the Tusker House update. I've booked that for our next trip. Bummer bout all the rain but at least you kept going and had fun and so cool you got a nearly private photoshoot with the monkeys and baloo!

Tusker House was awesome. Of course, we have now added it to our "must do" list for the next trip.

And yes, we loved our narly private little meeting with the monkeys and Baloo! That was SO unexpected. Of course, you know by now that we love finding characters.... so I was disappointed at the thought of a rainy day and what it might do to our character hunting. I love when Disney surprises me like that. :cool1:

Wow! Magnificent! I am an aspiring photographer and I WISH I could take as good quality photos as you do! What kind of camera do you have? Oh, yes, we'd get along famously. I love hunting characters and taking photos for our scrapbooks. :cool1: I have the Canon T2i.

Do you sew now? I started my sewing career making Barbie dresses. Even back then I made big beautiful (well, that's a relative term you know....:lmao:) gowns for them!

I've had a couple CM's tell me they want to do the same thing one day with their own daughters. I always appreciate hearing that. :goodvibes

I've been working on that new Belle gown for our December trip. I'm up to the hardest part. I did this same style 2 years ago,and for the life of me I can't remember how I did it! I do remember I made that gown twice, and sold the first one because I wanted the skirt fuller, so I have to be sure and get it right the first time!

This part is amusing. I'm using that yellow rose brocade fabric. I needed a solid yellow to put under the sheer gathered part of the skirt. That brocade is out as the design shows through. I was going with the solid yellow I normally use. So I laid it out for Katie to see.............. and she just shook her head no! She gave me one of those "I hate to tell you, but it's just not right" looks........... :rotfl2: I said "That's what I was afraid of, but there just might not BE another option." So I made her come with me to the fabric stores yesterday and we found just the right color. It looked like it had been made for this. :cool1:

Now........ to just be sure I don't mess this up. I can't get more of the sheer or the solid yellow...........

I'm going to apologize upfront because the is totally off topic, but I have a question and I KNEW you were the one to ask! My DD wants to meet Rapunzel when we go in October b/c she has a Rapunzel dress that she is taking and she's one of her favorites. It's actually pretty important to her. So I started doing a little research to find out where she is and boy did I get an earful over her meet and greet at MK! I had no idea that you had to be there before the roosters to get to see her without waiting in line all day! Anyway, since you are the queen of hunting down princesses, I wanted to see if you knew of anywhere else we can find her? I'm hoping that maybe she will be setting up shop in Epcot??? I also found a link that said Flynn would be leaving the MK M&G in July???? Don't know if that's true or not, but it has me wondering if they are changing the MK thing to a regular M&G??? Ok, I'm rambling now... I just thought if there was anyone with an inside scoop, it was you! I just cannot see myself standing there for a few hours in MK just for a M&G. The longest we have ever waited was about 40 minutes for the fairies and that was my limit!

So what's this "off-topic" nonsense? It's princess talk and all is fine! :rotfl:

I'm afraid what you heard is pretty much the truth. That meet & greet has just gotten crazy. But of course, it does appear that Flynn is leaving next week (Naveen too!) in a budget cutting move by the powers that be.

Sooooooooo......... I think everything you've heard is now subject to change. I think she'll continue to stay popular, but not to the insane degree their joint meet & greet has been. They have been coming out for a limited number of sets each day. Once this changes, rumor is that she will be nearly continual.... which if you think about it, is hard to accomplish with an outdoor face character. They have always tried hard not to have different actors play the same face characters back to back like that. So that would be a real departure for them. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them put up some sort of screen to shield view of Rapunzel from passers-by so kids won't notice different ones during the day.

So......... stay tuned. Things are changing.

As of right now, there has been no other regular meet & greet available. I contended all along that they needed to add them as regulars at Epcot to meet some of the demand.

It all seems pretty crazy to me, and you guys know what character fans we are. We planned to see them on this trip, but the first I heard of that line being long was when I was AT Disney. Not a peep about it here on the DIS before I left. Even then, there was no mad dash at rope drop like I hear there is now. From what I understand, you can get there at rope drop now, and by the time you get back there, you already have enough people in line ahead of you for the first set.

:scared1:

FLYNN UPDATE:

A CM just posted on one of the countless Rapunzel threads........ that Flynn is gone 7/3 but will appear at MNSSHP and MVMCP. I'm not even sure if we'll stop there, but if there's time, maybe. I'll let Katie decide.

Gosh, I really hate to hear that. I was looking forward to meeting the two of them together. We have had VERY few multi character meets and I LOVE to see the princes with their ladies. BUT, I do hope that means that the madness over her meet will end. I would just like to see a regular M&G that takes 5-10 minutes of waiting and move on, ya know! I don't give a rip about playing ring around the rosie with them! :rotfl: Anyway, thanks for the info. I'll have to keep my ears open for any news about it. Hopefully, things will have changed by the end of October.

Are you doing MNSSHP? You can see the pair there.

And yes, I do think it will take away some of the madness during the daily meets. I really thought they needed to address that, but NOT this way!

Wow. Although I'm happy to think we won't have to do the rope-drop race to stand in line for this M&G, I'm a little disappointed because we were really looking forward to meeting Eugene (my daughter will NOT call him Flynn :rotfl:). I guess we'll have to try to squeeze it in during the MNSSHP.

Sorry to barge in on the conversation there - just hadn't heard this before! :hippie:
