DON'T Read This TRIP REPORT If You're a Princess Hater!

Your pics are wonderful as always, but this comment sparked my interest. If you need any tips on fun things to do while in CO let me know. I spent 2-weeks in 2009 touring with my mom and could give you some ideas if you like. Not sure what your plans are, maybe it is just a ball game. But anywho either way let me know :thumbsup2, plus who knows maybe you want to drive up to Rapid City, SD and see Mt. Rushmore instead :rolleyes1. Since I live here I could give you some great places to go see and do :thumbsup2

OK........ time to pick your brain a bit! :teeth: We're getting closer to putting together a brief drive into Colorado (just to do the scenic drive into the Mountains. We've only gone straight through on I-70 on our way west before) then up through the Badlands. Probably no time for Rushmore this time, unless it's just a quick drive-by......

We don't have much time or money for this, but I'm going through scenery withdrawal and have to do SOMETHING. I'm really afraid I'll be disappointed after so many trips to the Southwest, but it HAS to be better than staying here in Missouri!

well before I give any input I need to know where you are coming from, how long you have, and what time you have dedicated too seein' stuff and then I will make my educated recommendations

OK, don't laugh. We're coming from Kansas City metro area and have only about 4 or 5 days tops. We'll make it to Denver the first night and go take the scenic route up in the mountains the next morning. We plan to head north after that. It's mostly driving. I might have to take all my photos from the car window......:lmao: OK, I MIGHT have time to slow down......... Mostly we're just dying to get out of town for a few days.

I'm once again caught up on your updates but I had to skip the chatter.

I am once again in awe of your pictures. I'm so glad Katie did the pick a pearl. My girls loved it too. Now you have to do it too. It took several trip for me to do it but I finally did this last trip.

You did really well with the graduation pictures. It's so hard to get good shots.
Robbie's senior photos you took look great too. I hope the professional pictures turn out good too.

You asked for it :) so here it goes…

Well since it takes a day to get there and drive home. I am going to suggest that you focus your time in Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park.

It is only a few hours North of Denver, but the whole National Park can be seen in a few days, including actually getting out of the car and hiking (which I suggest doing in the Bear Lake area). You can't stay in the park itself so you will have to find lodging in Estes Park (do this before you leave, heck do this tomorrow morning). I suggest you stay here if the have an opening. Very reasonably priced with super cute cabins and a hot tub. (Pine Haven- http://www.estesparkcabins.com/.

I suggest staying 3 nights in Estes Park.

DAY 1- Drive to Denver, stay night

DAY 2- Drive from denver to Estes Park
-Perhaps in the way out of town hit the Denver Aquarium, kinda pricey but totally worth it!
-On the way there stop at Butterfly Pavilion in http://www.butterflies.org/ in the city of Westminister.
-Once you check into hotel explore the town of Estes Park, Check out Stanley Hotel (Stephen King's the "The Shinning" is based off that hotel.

DAY 3- Explore Park (Park Map- http://www.nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/upload/detailedmapa.pdf)
- If 4-wheel drive take Old Fall River Rd to Trail Ridge Rd.
- Explore Alpine Visitor Center
- Keep Exploring as you drive to Grand Lake (watch for moose)
-Take Trail Ridge Rd. all the way back to Estes Park (Watch for Elk)

DAY 4- Explore Park- Bear Lake Area
- Today will be more leisurely
- Pick some hikes to go exploring
= I recommend: Emerald Lake (3 lakes in one hike BREATHTAKING) on the way back detour to Alberta Falls if you are still full of energy
= 2 easy hikes are Bear Lake and Sprague Lake (has a great shot for a sunset pic, silhouetted mountains)

DAY 5- Head back to Missouri

Below are pictures (clickable thumbnails, I couldn’t get them to load small so I went this route) from our trip... hope that helps. This way the trip is not rushed you get to see tons of cool stuff and get out of car :woohoo:
The photos are not the best because either my mom took them or they are screen shots form my blog ::sigh:: My new laptop died on this trip and it took my photos with it because I was an idiot and deleted them from the camera since I had already downloaded then to the computer :headache: Life sucked for months after that happened... see that elk shot I was SO proud of that shot... all gone... all gone. :sad1: Anywho, enjoy and I hope you like what I suggest for your family

I'm going to shed lurk-status once again and chime in!! I went to Estes Park a few years ago in June for my birthday, and I had a FANTASTIC time!!! My friend and I did most of the things that DISNEYaddict4evr suggested, and I can give you my opinions if you're interested!

Butterfly Pavillion: great! If you've gone to any other butterfly exhibit you'll know they're pretty much the same, but the experience never gets old for me.

Stanley Hotel: really cool to explore, very beautiful, but the "ghost tour" is kind of hokey and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are into that kind of thing. Example: (Tour guide) "*gasp* What was that? Did anyone get a picture of my left pantleg just now? I think so-and-so ghost just tugged on it! She is known to cause mischief!" :sad2:

Cabin: there are TONS of cabins in the area, we didn't stay at the ones DISNEYaddict4evr recommended but they were similar, right on the river. Loved it!

Downtown Estes Park: very cute, lots of shops and things to see and do.

Bear Lake Area: my friend surprised me with a guided hike to Cub Lake, which was super fun. There were lots of families hiking by themselves, though, so you don't need a guide at all. The wildlife and views were amazing!

We also drove further in to Rocky Mountain nat'l park but I started to get some altitude sickness so we turned around at one of the rest stops and came back down.

If you want scenery, Estes Park is perfect! :thumbsup2 I want to go back someday and stay longer. :lovestruc

I also think Estes is a great idea! You would have to drive right past my house to get there from Denver. We are about 30 minutes outside of Estes. Maybe we could FINALLY meet for that coffee we always talk about.

I'm a little late for the party but luvin your trip report. Luvin all your disney outfits and dresses!
That's kinda a bummer what happened to your princess of the day and I would be so mad if my tickets didn't work after waiting to get in for so long :( Luv the picture with Stitch from DHS and I so want the Snowman Mickey!
The look she is giving you in your first Magic Kingdom day is so funny!
Like how dare you!! :rotfl: I have learnt something from reading trip reports now.. If you sit on the "other" side of the road the castle is in your parade pics as well :lmao: We normally either sit where the soliders were or in front of the castle!
How cool that you keep getting the same fairy god-mother every trip!
When we were there in September the 3:00 parade in MK came from Frontierland as well but it was mapped to come that way.
What amazing pixie dust you got at the Xmas party with all three princesses and princes! :thumbsup2

:confused3

anyone there???

did she leave on her trip to Colorado and not say goodbye :sad2:

I know she was on the other day. But she might've left...or just really busy right now

Hi all! Just stopping by to say howdy and my responses will be greatly lagged... I'm off school for the summer and hence lost my high speed internet privileges! :faint:

Hope you are having a great week Janet!

OK, I'm trying to type this on a netbook, and I'm apparently TERRIBLE at it, as I typed 2 very lengthy replies, and lost them both...........

I'm going to give up after I apologize to you Disneyaddict4evr for not getting back with you after you were nice enough to offer up such detailed help and suggestions. I hope you'll forgive me for not getting back, and that you won't decide to vote me off my own trip report! :duck:

It's really hard to explain what' it's like for me to try and get out the door on any vacation, even a short one. I have to close out any outstanding work, PLUS I took on 3 more large orders that had to be done before I could leave. I ended up just abdicating all trip related things to my husband while I worked around the clock. I finished up around dinner time the night before we left. I had to let Katie pack for ME! :scared1: Yep, that bad.

Anyway, we're in your neck of the woods tonight in Hill City, and will see Crazy Horse and Rushmore in the AM before heading for the Badlands. We made a quick drive into Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. We drove through Estes Park, but didn't have time to see much there.

Anyway, many thanks again for all the help you offered up. I had no idea when I asked that life would busy up so horribly in the short time I had left. :flower3:

No worries, I know how cleaning up loose ends can take over before trip. Glad you made it on the road safe and sound... and I still think you are crazy for covering so much ground but HEY, what do I know right? I hope you are having fun and are getting out of the car often. I mean the only call them road trips because you are traveling on the road, not spending your entire vacation on it

Oh my gravy, you're in South Dakota?! My sister used to live there when I was little, Hot Springs is where she was. They had this awesome water park called the Plunge where you actually swam in the hot springs. And they had a place called the Mammoth Dig which was amazing. Apparently a long long time ago there was this HUGE mud pit there and all the mammoths fell in and couldn't get out and so they died in there. But all the fossils are still there and they made it into a museum. It is perhaps one of the most interesting things / places I have ever been to.

I saw Mt. Rushmore twice, something I never really appreciated until I realized that so many people would probably never get to see it.

I always wanted to see Crazy Horse but no one ever wanted to go :confused3

I wish someday to take my girls out there.

Have fun!!

So jealous of this picture! I'm hoping I can get on like this! Love the dwarfs. :lovestruc :rotfl:

Love all your pictures! Your TR is so fun to read

Howdy strangers!

We got back late last night. Told you it was a quick trip...... :rolleyes1

We didn't really budget for a big summer trip this year, but really just found ourselves wanting to get out of town for a few days and see something ANYTHING interesting! Living in Missouri, we have to travel a full day to get close to anything remotely interesting......

We ended up making a brief drive into Rocky Mountain National Park. They had just opened the pass last Sunday that we took. The name escapes me right now....... As we drove near the top, we got to see WHY it had just opened! The snow was probably 15 feet high on the sides of the road up there. It was fascinating to see the huge snow plows sitting there and to see the massive piles of snow. Man, I'd love to see them actually clearing those roads!

I got to take some photos from what felt like the top of the world. And got some odd looks from the others around me in winter coats when I stepped out into blowing snow...... wearing shorts! :lmao: Still, I do love looking a big rocky things, so I enjoyed our brief visit.

From there, we headed north toward one of my favorite stops of the trip.... a chance to have lunch with my friend Gretchen! (scrapsofheaven). We've been email friends for years, so this was really awesome to get to meet her in person. :goodvibes

We started the next day with a visit to Mount Rushmore. We then took the scenic drive through Custer State park, which was wonderful. Got stuck in a bison jam and everything. It was really fun. Katie enjoyed petting the wild burros. The scenery around there was far more remarkable than I expected. I actually had hesitation about going, as we've been to the desert southwest, and I LOVE it there. I thought this might disappoint, but it really did not.

We ended the evening with a drive through Bear Country USA. We had looked all over Yellowstone for bears a few years ago, and come up empty. When we drove through South Dakota that year we joked about maybe finding them there......... this time we really did. The baby bear exhibit was one of everyone's favorite stops of the whole trip. I'm not sure how many there were, but I'd say at least 15, and they were very playful.

We stayed right outside the Badlands in Wall, SD that night and planned to hit the parks early the next day. We were up and out early...... but the weather was very non-cooperative. There was a dense fog that took some time to burn off. Eventually we were treated to clearing skies and some remarkable views to end our trip.

We drove all the way home from South Dakota yesterday. Aside from finding I-29 closed for flooding, it was an uneventful drive home.

Today I'm regrouping before starting back on some work tomorrow.

Soooooooo......... thanks again for everyone's patience. I hope to be updating my trip report again soon. And when I get all my photos from this trip downloaded and edited, I'll post a few here.

Part of me wants to take my time getting the next day of this trip report done, as it's the last full day of the trip.......

I'm once again caught up on your updates but I had to skip the chatter.

So what did you do with your pearl once you picked one too?

And thanks for the nice comments on the photos. :goodvibes

First off..... :welcome: to my trip report! You know........ now that I've shown back up again.........:rolleyes1

All of that stuff sounds awesome. But honestly, we never stay in one place long enough to do all the interesting little stuff. Mostly I just like to go see big rocks........ errrr......... interesting landscape. I just can't get enough of it. There are still so many areas of the country we haven't seen, and I want to see and photograph it all. Can't do that and stay in one place very long. Especially if I ALSO want to go to Disney once a year! :lmao:

My husband would probably love the Stanley Hotel. He'd probably love the tour too. It just wasn't in the budget this time. This was definitely a budget endeavor!

I also think Estes is a great idea! You would have to drive right past my house to get there from Denver. We are about 30 minutes outside of Estes. Maybe we could FINALLY meet for that coffee we always talk about.

Sounds like a great plan. We should do that sometime. No...... wait......... we DID! :dance3:

It was so awesome to meet you after....... HOW many emails? No... wait....... don't count. I'd be embarrassed to fess up the number.........

I'm a little late for the party but luvin your trip report. Luvin all your disney outfits and dresses!

Hi! And :welcome:!!!!!!

It really was an odd day for us at DHS. The rest of the trip more than made up for it, but still an odd start. I think we'll make it back this December as well. I thought I might stop by Guest Relations at DHS and tell them what happened last year and see if there's any way they could arrange a meeting with Gaston this time. My personal philosophy...... I can always ask....... they can always say no. Can't hurt, right?

I have to say, I usually pick our parade spots based on the view I want for my photos. The only view really left on my "Disney parade photography to-do list" is the view from upstairs at the train station. I've seen photos taken from that perspecitve and really love them. I hear those spots fill up early though, so I'll really have to plan for that one....

Hi all! Just stopping by to say howdy and my responses will be greatly lagged... I'm off school for the summer and hence lost my high speed internet privileges! :faint:

Hope you are having a great week Janet!

I'm afraid I'm behind even on your short pre-trip report. Did you start a trip report? I'm dying to see everything from your impromptu trip! Or is that out of the question without your high speed internet? :scared1:

I hope you're getting settled into a nice summer routine now.

We did have a lot of fun on what I will now call our "drive-by" vacation. Thanks for understanding!

By the way......... I loved the photos you posted from Colorado and Estes park. I especially loved the elk photos.......

We did find some wildlife along the way, probably more than on prior trips. I had a lot of fun photographing them. We were very excited to find some bighorn sheep right off I-70 on our way out of Denver. We stopped and pulled over so I could get the photo. I'll post that photo later!

Well, we WERE in South Dakota! But then I blinked and we weren't! :lmao:

But it beats the heck out of our 2006 trip through on the way back from Yellowstone. We were going to see Rushmore, but made a tactical error and didn't have a room to stay in........ so we had to drive right on by. We were on the tail end of a 2 week road trip and didn't make reservations that far out.

Honestly, I just told my husband on our way home yesterday that I had no idea just how much South Dakota had to offer. I loved what we saw!

We didn't make it to Mammoth Dig, but I knew what you were talking about. I'd still like to do that one day.

We took our time at Rushmore and really loved it. I was less than impressed with our first view. As we drove up, I looked up and saw their gray faces against a gray sky with an average looking gray concrete parking structure in front. But then as we parked and got closer........ the skies cleared and turned a brilliant blue....... and I did fall in love with it. I'm glad we also took the scenic drive through Custer State Park for some distant views.

I hope you are having a blast!

Thanks Jen! Hopefully I can catch up on your trip report again soon! :rolleyes1

If there was ever a trip I want to go on,( besides Disney :thumbsup2) it's out west. My Grandparents took me out west for 3 weeks when I was 17. It was the best trip I've ever been on ( again, besides Disney:lmao:)

We went from here (WI) and went through MN,ND,SD,MT,WY,ID,WT,OR,CA,NV,AZ,MN,CO,NE, IA.

We saw MT Rushmore, Crazy Horse, The Badlands, Wall Drug, Stugis, Yellowstone, The Grand Canyon, Redwood Forest, Vegas baby, Air Force Academy, and many other places.
I wish someday to take my girls out there.

Have fun!!

Now THAT was a road trip! Surely you didn't miss Utah in there????

We've done the southwest and love nearly every stop we make there. You really should take the girls when you can.

It's so funny you mentioned Wall Drug. We stayed in Wall, SD and counted over 20 billboards as we drove into town. So we drove right by Wall Drug, but didn't even go in! :lmao:

So jealous of this picture! I'm hoping I can get on like this! Love the dwarfs. :lovestruc :rotfl:

Love all your pictures! Your TR is so fun to read

Thank you! :goodvibes

And I'm sure you'll get a photo just like this on your trip this December! :dance3: Of course, they do make changes to the party every year, but the dwarfs were a big hit, so I can't imagine they'd change that. Although with the work going on where the skyway was, I'm guessing they'll have a new location.

You're so funny:lmao: Utah was in there, I must have missed it. The other day I was telling a friend about Mt Rushmore and I took out my photos. I laughed at my 17 yr old attemps a "good" photos. I think cute boys made up a couple of the shots:rotfl2:
