Done with Direct TV

Interesting that I'm reading this today as we are also going to cancel Direct-TV. It's just too expensive for us. I hope to go to basic cable with a Netflix subscription. I really have liked Direct TV and the service, but we are down to one income and we need to cut somewhere.

Wow- I was just about to cancel our Comcast to go with Direct TV. Our bill with TV, land line phone and internet is $169 but with taxes, equipment rental fee's, etc., it comes out to about $203 a month. We do have the HD box with DVR. I just want to take advantage of a new customer discount for a while. I need to call and see how long we have to commit vs. how long the discount lasts.

What do you all do for internet and phone with Direct TV?

we have DSL and our land line through Windstream. It's pretty good. 5mgbs internet and unlimited long distance for $69 a month. The DSL isn't as fast as a lot of other services, but it does the job.

I just called to cancel ST as well. They offered it to me for about half the price, and I declined. We will just go to a sports bar for the games that are blacked out. We've been customers for 7 years, and it stinks that new customers are getting it for free.

Its a 1yr guarantee

We have been with them for 13 years, before they were called Directv (were they Primestar or something then?) Anyway, we called a few months back and told them we were going to cancel since Dish was sending us so many great offers, and they offered the sports package and showtime for free for 6 months, free HD for 5 years, and $10 off of total bill for 6 months. Maybe try again and see if you get someone else? Good luck!

Now see...we tried that after being Direct TV members for over 10 years and all we wanted was a DVR..nope..we switched to Dish and since then Direct sends us offers and 'we'll pay off your contract" and stuff like that, when if they just would have given us a DVR we never would have left at all.silly.

I'm in the same boat as others who are crunching numbers to figure out if DirecTv is a better deal than cable. Of course, to compare things apples to apples I had to call and see what the cost would be to add whole home DVR, or at least another HD receiver to our current cable bill. The first 12 month savings are great, the 2nd 12 months, not as much. And, of course I've heard horror stories about satellite service, so that scares me a bit. Decisions, decisions!!

We've been with them since they first started up in the Atlanta area more than 20 years ago. Ticks me off when we can't get a good deal.

We just switched to HD Directv and my husband was so proud that he got a lousy 5.00 off our bill each month. I laughed and asked if he counter offered and he said no because he thought it was a great deal.
Good grief. If I had my way I'd have ditched them and contacted the other company. But nope, it's all in my husbands name and he wants Directv. Sigh.

Does anyone with Directv get chareged for leased recievers? I thought I owned the recievers but they are charging me $6 a month for them. Then they want tme to have a protection plan on recievers that I am leasing from them?

Yep you lease them, not own them. I really wanted to go with them last year but if you do not have stellar credit or allow them to run a credit check it was $300 up front for the receiver :scared1:. I said no thanks, I 'll keep my cable.

You should be getting 1 as part of your programming package and the rest are leased indiviually and paid for each mo depending on what type of receiver you have.

I declined the protection plan.

After reading this thread I contacted Direct TV. We have been a customer for over 15 years. I explained what my issues were. She came back with a "thank you we appricate you being a loyal Direct TV customer so I will make you this offer" Her offer was $323 one time payment or I could go 6 monthly payments. But I had to do it now becasue she wasn't suppose to be doing this and she could get in trouble if I called later and tried to get the same deal with another rep. What a load of chocolate chips!!!!! Anyway, I explain I'm tired of being treaded like a second class citizen when we have been giving them our buisness for 15 + years and then new customers get all the peaks and special deals. She says she can totally understand where I'm coming from and offers me a "one time" special deal. $20 off for 6 months. Which brings the whole package down to $203. Are you freakin kidding me????
We are not under contract with them, but have so much invested in this that it is hard to walk away. I barely watch TV but my husband is a TV junkie. ARGHHHHHH Just needed to vent.
Oh, by the way I told her that we were tired of all of this and she says let me see if there are any other great deals like the NFL ticket that she might be able to get for us. I thanked her and hung up.

So that means that despite them saying you get them for free you don't. That's deceptive. I wonder if you buy a new box for the price online if that is still considered their box?

Wow I didn't even know they ran a credit check on us but then again we have been with them for forever. I wouldn't pay $300 for a leased reciever that is insane.

We have 2 recievers and are charged a lease fee for both. I am trying to figure out what to question them about when I call on these things.

On my bill it shows a charge for 3, but then in the credits it shows one of them coming off, so in the end I'm only paying for two. Do you show one in the credit line?

Time Warner Cable internet- $44/mo
Ooma Phone service- $1 per month ($199 up front but that was 2 years ago now.)
Directv- when it hit $100 we cancelled.

So, I was paying around $130 before the price hike for TV, internet and phone.

I now cut DTV and went to over the air and Roku with Netflix ($15/mo)

So, I now pay $60/mo for all 3.

Yes, I did see I get a credit for one of them.

The monthly fee per receiver is not a leasing fee, it is a fee to provide programming to that receiver. I own 3 DirecTV Tivos outright and still have to pay the monthly fee per receiver.

Most DTV customers don't own their receivers....even if they had to pay a fee to get it at start-up, they still have to send them back to DTV if they cancel service.

My friend has directv aswell as I do..She called because of an issue of not getting some of her husband's favorite channels. She did not have the protection plan and they insisted they would come out and charge her to get fix it and automatically place her on the plan. Since her husband actually pays the bill, she handed the phone over to him at that time. He listened to their explanation then yelled into the phone-"Do'nt I pay enough to your company already and you want to charge me to get service fixed?" She got her supervisor who said every customer is entitled to one free service call a year and they would not be place on the plan.
When her contract was up, she started playing the game of negotiations on the phone. I did as well.
If you still aren't happy with their offers, tell them to send boxes so you can return their receivers and pick a date to tell them to shut off service. You will get inundated with calls for offers, pick one or negotiate further.
My issue with them is the satellite on the side of my house. During snow storms, snow sticks then turns to ice and because of that we couldn't get service. We didn't know that right off. The person that answered for Dtv was in Mississippi and said "sorry, you have to wait for the snow and ice to melt" Really? January in Ohio, I don't think so. While my husband was trying to talk to him because I was livid, I started to think. We have Deicer spray for our windshields, maybe that can be used. Course the Southern gentleman never heard of such a thing. Sure enough the ice slipped off with a thud and we got service back. I had switched to cable and cable telephone/internet that summer and during one month's time, electricity went out 3 times and the cable line to the outside box was faulty and needed replaced for free but never did.
Stuck between a rock and a hard place.
