Donation of some points...

My husband and I had to cancel a Disneyland trip this summer because of a friend's illness. We got all of our points back, but gave some to our college-grad daughter to invite some of her friends to spend 4 days at Lake George, NY. Anyway, we have 27 points left over that will expire in December. Is there a charitable Disney fund that someone could donate these points to?

We're heading down the last week of October, after two previous Disney trips this year. I'd love to go down and use the points the first week of December, but husband says, "no way, we're done with disney this year!"

Anyway, if anyone has any info - hate to see them go to waste, and husband doesn't want to rent them - thinks they'd be too much of a hassle.

Thanks :earsboy:

Presently, there is no mechanism availale to accept points to donate to charity. Some organizations, like "Make-A-Wish Foundation" or "Give-Kids-The-World" are happy to accept reservations for their families and staff, but they have no way to use points themselves. At this moment, points expiring soon will have limited opportunity to even make a reservation due to minimal availability between now ond the end of the year. In addition, such donations of reservations may not be deductible.

You might consider renting the points and donating the proceeds to your own favorite charity.

I need 19 more points to change a reservation that i am presently renting from a DVC owner. If you could transfer to her i would write a check to your charity or a money order sent to you to give to your favorite charity.
She was planning to buy points and then i would pay her 190 more.

Unless the points are "current" they cannot be transferred. (If they are current, they can (most likely) still be banked into next year.)

That's the problem with many of the points that could be used for such donations- they can't be banked and cannot be transferred to another account and will expire at the end of the Use Year. Hopefully, that's not the case with the points in this case, but it's often not as simple as we'd like.

Thanks for the education WebmasterDoc.

Something could still be done such as renting 2 weeknights at 13 each but it would be more complicated.

Perhaps you should just contact the OP directly and see what you can work out.

Good luck!

Just realize that even if donated in any form, they are not tax deductible. If you rent them and get cash, you could donate them but that would negate your stated approach. You could always get days for make a wish or similar or donate to a silent auction though you don't have much time.

Since these appear to be borrowed points that can't be banked, I don't really think there is anything other than renting them that can be done. The real problem is that they aren't enough to make much of a reservation.

One could "trade" with another member to use them now in return for a points that are useable at a later date and possibly could be transferred to the OP.

That's a great idea, Dean. I'm going to remember that one for my friend who has 151 points and only uses them every third year. Once in awhile she ends up with a few extra points like that. Maybe I'll do that with her next time she's in that situation.

It sounds to me that the points in question were originally used to make a reservation at one of the Disneyland Resorts. If that is true, they could be used for a reservation at one of the non-DVC WDW resorts. AFAIK, there is still quite a bit of availability left for the non-DVC WDW Resorts between now and December.

Perhaps the OP could contact Make-A-Wish and donate a night (or two) at one of the moderates. A Friday or Saturday night is 27 points and a weeknight is 15 for most of September and all of November.

Best wishes -

We regularly donate a reservation to Give Kids the World rather than have them expire. They truly have families that can really use them. Being blessed with the wonderful gift of DVC membership, we encourage others to do the same. They do send paperwork making your reservation donation tax deductable for the current rack rate.

Zimbubba -

Can you let me know the contact info for Give the Kids the World? I have some expiring points that we will not be able to use before the end of our use year and I would love to be able to donate them to a good cause. Thanks!!

Thank you one and all for your great suggestions about the 27 points. They were indeed points left over from a reservation at the Grand Californian at DL.
They can only be used at a Disney hotel - not a DVC property. I'm sorry I wasn't clear about that in my original post.

Add 3 more points and get 2 nights at a moderate weekday and donate as suggested above or rent it out. And I'm not certain that reservation points can't be transferred, you might want to check into that option.

The contact that I used to donate a reservation to Give the Kids the World is:

Andrew Wilkins
Director of Human Resources

Thanks again for the info. I'll let you know how this all turns out..
