Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

Frankly, I don't think we'll have much of a choice but to quack to find each other. Y'all talk about wearing lime green shirts and Donald Ducks, as though you'll be standing out from the crowd. Hello?!? It's Disney World and there's gonna be a couple hundred DIS'ers there running that night. You think Disney characters on lime green anything will look obvious? I think quacking is our best plan! Yep, and I think we'll have to add the wing-flap movement, too, just to make sure we find the right group. You never know...there may be rogue Defiant Dashing Ducks out there in the dark at 10 PM. It'll be our safest move.

Call me stupid, but I don't drink anything for runs up to 1 hour long. I hydrate well before I go, then leave a big bottle of water on the front porch, so when I get back I can guzzle it down. I've tried the belt thing, but it rubs me raw. And I can't hold anything in my hands for that long without my hands cramping up. So I go without. And I don't eat anything until I hit 15 mile runs (or so). So I won't need to worry much for this half or the training. There will be water spots along the course, so I'll rehydrate in the humid Florida night during the race, but no food until the party.

Quack on, Ducks!

The lime should still stand out . . . after all, it's not Team in Training purple!

I like the picture of a bunch of people walking around quaking. :rotfl: Wish I could see it!

I also have a question to ask one of you running experts. I am doing a walk/jog combo of 3 min/2 min on the treadmill and outside. I have noticed that when I am walking on the treadmill my shins hurt so I have to slow down a little or I find myself holding onto the handle. At first I thought I was walking too fast, but my pace is the same outside as on the treadmill, but my shins don't hurt when I am outside. And they don't hurt either place when I jog. So I am not sure what I am doing wrong, unless it's something with my stride that's off when I walk. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You do know that the Official Color of the DIS is lime green? Most DIS'ers will be wearing The Green.

And is no one else concerned about the potential for rogue Defiant Dashing Ducks?!? Perish the thought!

Shirisha-

Not trying to avoid your question. I just don't do the run/walk thing, so I have no experience in what you're dealing with. I think there are other run/walk Ducks? Anyone???

I am not sure what the answer is, but I have the same problem with my knee.

Yes, I'm very aware about the lime green as the official color of the DIS. ;) I've run in 3 Disney Marathon events, though...and have never seen an abundance of lime green. Purple, yes ... lime green, no (other than the WISH shirts.)

Unless, the Lime Green people are more toward the front of the pack . . . then I would never see them!

Laura - Oops! didn't mean to offend, if I did. I guess I spend too much time on the DIS and assume many more DIS'ers are at the running events than really are. Having never run a Disney race, I am clueless. Again, sorry if I offended. So maybe meeting at Tent D with Lime Green on and/or a Donald Duck attached in some form would work?

Ran 10K today. Took a minute off my time from last Saturday, so there is some progress.

Liz - I signed up for the "Canadian Derby Edmonton 10K" on 21 August. Now I've got an intermediate race to train for before the half in October.

Signed up this week for a few F&W Festival special dining events for the week after the half. 10 weeks until the W&D Half now? Is that right? How's everyone's training coming along?

Don't be silly . . . not offended at all!

Hello Ducks, good to see we are still out running. We are battling the heat here, it has been really oppressive. Sort of kills my ambitions of working at Disney, unless it is a seasonal job, do not think I could handle the summers there!

Yesterday I rode in a Wounded Warrior ride, there were a good number of returning disabled vets doing this. Very touching ceremony at a stop where they renamed a bridge in honor of a young Marine from the area who lost his life in Iraq.

I must be crazy to even think of a 5K in this weather, but if I can get away from a birthday party I will do one that starts at 6pm.

Regarding some of the questions on here, I like to take a GU before a race, and depepnding on the length have another. I do not like carrying water, and depend on the water stops along the route. Though maybe a belt would be good. For cycling though I use a Camelback.

Haver a good week!

Augie

Augie: Hope you made it to your 5k and faired well in it.

As for the questions about hydration and eating, I try to drink about 8 oz of water during my short runs (4.5 - 6 miles) and 8 to 16 oz on my long runs (6.5 - 12 miles). I actually do not eat anything on my runs because it makes me feel sluggish/sick.

It has been exciting reading about everyones preparations for the W&D in October. I would really like to be there just to hear everyone quack!!!

As for me I've had some ups and downs lately. I'll cover the downs first: My father was told he needed to register for the heart transplant list and my father-in-law was informed that he needs to have triple bypass surgery. So thats been kind of crazy. Now for the ups: I have lost 32 lbs. (Still need to lose another 32 to make it to my goal weight.), I set a PR in a 5k last night 30'02" (I so wanted to be under 30'00"), and for the past 5 weeks I have basically done nothing but run hills (Which has helped me in my races).

Anyway sorry to be long winded, I hope everyones training keeps going well and I look forward to hearing more ideas for the W&D meet.

Hi everyone, hope you all are doing good :hippie:.
I had a good 11.5 mile run on Saturday, the rain kept the temps down, but boy it was humid.
I did 5.25 this afternoon at a faster pace that felt pretty good. I think I am going to take a break the rest of the week from running and do a little cross training and maybe a bike ride around the neighborhood. My big toe has been bothering me alittle, not so much while running but after, the toe snap crackle and pops when I move it, luckily the pain doesn't stick around.

Liz: I wanted to try a pair of those South African socks when I first read about them from the running store I go to, but $9.99 for a pair:scared1:. While at the Ann Arbor Art Fair this weekend the running store had them at 10% off. I bought a pair and tried them today, they are the MOST comfortable socks I have ever worn, I wish I would have bought more.

As far as meeting up before the half, Tent D would be good, we might be ok getting together, even in a sea of lime green. I have met Augie already and I think I can pick him out in a lineup and I will be meeting Dan at the Air Force Marathon in September. All of us on Facebook should be able to recognize me, I sure post enough pictures of myself on their. Anyone else on FB that hasn't friended me, here's my link http://www.facebook.com/jreyno

have a good week everyone, I will be posting FB updates from WDW this weekend.:cool1:

I feel like I had a REAL breakthrough this morning. My plan all week was to run 7.5 miles today as my "long run". I've been mentally preparing for this, trying to figure out how I was going to gut it out that last 1.3 miles more than last week (10K/6.2 miles last week).

So I did what ALL the books say to do...start out really slow and strive for a negative split. So I ran my first 2.5 miles and averaged 10:45 min/mile. Pretty slow for me. But amazingly?!? I felt great! Like I hadn't really run anything so far! So I sped up my next 2.5 miles and averaged 10:30 min/mile for the total 5 miles! Then I sped up just a bit more on my last 2.5 miles and got my overall average down to 10:17 min/mile for the whole run. I felt so good at that point, I ran out to 8 miles total today! Woo hoo! It felt good and pretty effortless. Absolutely amazing! I couldn't have done this without the Garmin. What a great tool. And what a great confidence booster this run was. Now I'm fully past the point of "Can I really run that half marathon?" to "I can really run that half marathon!". And those books? They were right. It works. :rolleyes1

SamSam - I was lurking on another thread in the restaurant section and it appears that we'll be dining together on 8 October at the French Regional Lunch at Bistro de Paris. What fun! Looking forward to meeting you there.

To all the Ducks - Know that I think of you during my runs. I lift you up and hope your training is going well, that your lives are smooth enough to leave time for your runs, that you're finding time for yourselves to participate in this healthy activity. And it motivates me to know that I'll be meeting lots of you in Tent D, quacking or not, in about nine weeks. It's good to be accountable to y'all!

Hope you all have a good weekend! I'm flying down to the US tomorrow for the week, seeing doctors, dentists, some friends and family. Will return on 7 August. Hope to get a few runs in down there while on vacation.

Hi Everyone!

So the 5k that I did in July was amazing! It was great to run for my grandmother and for Hospice! I finished in 34:55 and was 68th overall (and 2nd in my age group!)

And while I was in Germany last week, I got to go out for a run with some of the guys who were there for the same thing I was...and It was so much fun! Getting to run through a city on the other side of the world with new friends, great! :) The run was 3 miles or so and we did it in 27 minutes (which is faster than I normally trot along!)

Howdy Ducks!

My husband returned home from deployment last week so on Friday I finally got the chance to run outside for the first time! :cool1: I didn't measure distance or speed - just wanted to see how it felt. I think it went well. Definitely takes more effort to slow my speed down. Next time I run I will hopefully be able to tell how fast I'm going.

One thing was different from running outside over the treadmill - my thighs were so sore!! I'm guessing it's because it takes more effort to propel yourself forward than when you're on the treadmill.

This morning I finally utilized the gym here at our development and got on the bike for a bit. I want to start cross-training again and I think biking is a great option for me. I really enjoyed it.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! :goodvibes

So glad your hubby is home! Please tell him THANK YOU from all of us. We appreciate what he does for us & we're so glad he is home & safe.

GREAT job running outside! :thumbsup2

I can't believe I have six weeks til my first half.
Even scarier is that school starts in JUST four weeks! :scared1:
