Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

Hello All,

Was invited over by Liz and hoping you still have room for one more in your group? Just started running seriously a couple of months ago. Enjoyed reading your posts. I am in the Air Force with almost 18 years in, plan on retiring in 2 years and becoming a junior high or high school teacher. Currently working on my masters degree in secondary education.
Looking to get back into shape, I have been sitting behind a desk for a few years and got fat. Since September I have dropped 20 pounds and started exercising about 5-6 days a week, made a new years resolution to run the 2011 WDW full marathon (combine my favorite two things Disney and exercising). My wife jokingly says exercising has become my mistress. My info:

Real Name: Dan
Age: 36
Location: Newport News, Virginia
Family Stats: Married to a great lady with two kids DD12 DS10
Races: None as of yet
Upcoming Races: Running my first race on 13 Feb a 14K for valentines day, looking for a half in April or May, but most of the ones around here are full already, if anyone is from around here and has any ideas please let me know. Running the WDW full in 2011 (My new years resolution).
Pets: 2 dogs, 2 cats
Hobbies/Interests: Exercising,Disney, and my family (I travel a lot with my current job and try to spend as much time as possible when I am at home)
Favorite Disney Park: Epcot, love the food from around the world ( I think this is what got me in trouble the first time)
Favorite Disney Dining Spots: Biergarten, 50's prime time cafe
Coolest Things You Ever Did: Beat skin cancer (Malignant Melanoma) been cancer free for almost 4 years. I've done some pretty cool stuff in my life I have traveled and lived in places all over the world (just moved back to the states from Japan last March), been to war and survived, met some of the best people this country has to offer and would not change any of it.

Thanks
Dan

Hello Carissa, I'll be down in your neck of the woods on Saturday morning (gonna be cold) running the Virginia is for lovers race down at the amphitheater. Do you know of any good running parks in this area? I really do not like running on the roads around here, been about run over a couple of times. I have a 3 mile loop in the neighborhood which isn't bad, but I am looking for some new scenery. I heard the botanical gardens is nice to run in over in Norfolk.

I sure hope it's warmer than it is today! :scared1: This cold wind bites right through you.

I'm afraid I'm fairly new to the area and new to running. There is a 4 mile loop at Mt. Trashmore here in Virginia Beach. I'm hoping to do some of my outdoor runs over there once my husband returns from deployment. If you've never been to Mt. Trashmore, I recommend it. They have an awesome playground and a skatepark.

Welcome, Dan! Seems like there are a lot of Air Force folks on here, I was in myself a long time ago.

Emily, good job on the race. Too bad it was so wet. Have done my share of wet races! And yes, getting close to the start line is a big boost.

We had a snow day yesterday, and a delayed opening today. Which gives me time to shovel out the driveway.

Have a good day, everyone!

Augie

We got between 12-15 inches of snow yesterday - I'm dreaming of Florida and know I'll be there in a couple weeks...oh, am I ever ready for sunshine and warmer weather! Shoveling was my cardio yesterday (back patio/front walk)- thankfully we have a snow blower too, so it wasn't too painful (driveway, DH)

--
Liz- great news on the tradmill - sorry to hear DS10 is still under the weather -psst, love RunningSkirts too ---- An upcoming race for me - April 11 (Bucks County Half Marathon) - you got my other two, thanks Liz

Carissa - I am S-L-O-W, but I move my body, so i'm still proud! Also, like Tricia mentioned - I also do a run/walk -- if you have an ipod touch/or iphone there's an interval timer called ultratimer where you can set intervals and play it behind your music- you can set your own intervals...works great.

Tricia - I'm tracking elsewhere, so won't really be doing that here for miles, etc..more like mentioning what i got done recently as I post

MarathonMommy - ha...extra acreage is NOT something i want back there (the dots) -but I do love their skirts, I wear a choc. brown color one

Emily - congrats on your 30 mins race - sorry it ended up being a wet one! Great news on DH

Dan - hi and welcome to the Ducks! Thanks for your years or service to our country - and good luck on your future plans to teach - the WDW full may be my first full also! Congrats on beating cancer

Living in Virginia Beach, we don't get much snow although we did get a very rare eight inches a couple of weeks ago and a couple of dustings besides. But, it has been too cold!! I am so ready for warm weather. Please soak up some sun and warmth for me when you go! :goodvibes

I've heard about that app and wish I had an iPhone! Unfortunately, I have a different smart phone. That app would make life so much easier. I think if I would have known I'd be doing C25K when we bought our phones in December, I might have paid the extra money and splurged for an iPhone. :rolleyes1

I did week 3 day 3 of the C25K program today and it went great! I was finally able to complete all of my intervals and I even added an additional 90 second run at the end. :cool1:

Slow and steady wins the race. ;)

Hello Ducks!!! Sorry I've been MIA, trying to let the shins heal up. Hope everyone has been doing well and training going good.

Happy Thursday Ducks!

My 10 yr old is finally back in school today after missing 7 days due to his flu and ear infection! His classmates cheered when the receptionist called his teacher on the intercom to tell her he was coming. :goodvibes I told him that if he gets really tired I can come and get him, but we're only 45 minutes until the end of the school day so I guess he is good. :wizard:

Laura~ So you aren't into the Tink wings?? I'm not either to be honest. lol

Emily~ Congrats again on your first 5K!! :) Let me know when your 10K is and I'll add it to the race list. That's great your dh wants to run now! Will he do the C25K too?

Carissa~ Nothing wrong with walking if you need to do that! You are doing awesome in all of this girl!! "Slow and steady wins the race." When becoming a runner, I think that this is very true!

Dan~ Welcome! :) Glad you decided to join us. :thumbsup2 I'll add your upcoming races to the list. YAY on beating cancer!!! :goodvibes

Augie~ Be careful shoveling!

Deb~ Sorry about the snow, yes, you will be in lovely Florida before you know it! :goodvibes Thanks for the race info.

AUdisneyDad~ Hi there, welcome to the 2010 Triple D's! So tell us about yourself? That survey Laura posted (Dan filled it out yesterday) is handy dandy. :thumbsup2 Best wishes with the shins!

Liz - So glad to hear DS10 made it back to school today! :cool1: How cute that everyone cheered for him. :goodvibes

Thanks for taking care of the lists. :thumbsup2 I'm going to look through my options again today and at least come up with a tentative plan for a 5K.

I found a podcast here:

http://www.motiontraxx.com/

It does intervals for 30 minutes of 1 minute jog/1 minute walk. Most of the speeds/bpm are too fast for me, but I can deal with that. I can go at my own speed and just use the dings for increasing/decreasing. I can just start over after 30 minutes or by then I may be about dead and need to just walk the rest of the way. :rolleyes1

Thanks for the link, I am dowloading now and look forward to using it if I ever walk/run outside again. :goodvibes

Welcome to our new team members. It looks like we have people from all over, I think it's pretty fun to be part of a team with people from Florida, Canada, New York, etc.

I'm also hoping to meet those that are doing the Food and Wine Half, there are already 5 of us signed up!

Dan,

I was doing some looking for local races and saw a few that might work for you. Not sure if you already know about these.

1) Dismal Swamp Stomp Half-Marathon, Chesapeake - April 17

This one looks limited to 2,500 participants so this may be one of the ones you said was already full.

2) Blue Ridge Marathon, Roanoke - April 24

This also includes a half-marathon. It's not really local since it's about 200 miles away, but thought I'd mention it.

3) Rock-n-Roll Half-Marathon, Virginia Beach - September 5

This one is later than you were hoping for, but maybe it would work?

Liz - You can put me down for the ECSC (East Coast Surfing Championships) 5K on August 29th here in Virginia Beach.

Unfortunately I have a business trip to North Carolina and Louisiana the last two weeks of April. The dismal swamp one looks pretty cool. I wanted to run the Shamrock, but they filled up on 1 Jan. I meant to sign up for the Rock n Roll yesterday, because they were giving away some pretty cool stuff if you signed up on the 10th, but forgot. Anyways I just signed up for the Rock and Roll today. Looks like a lot of fun. I wish the relay was at a different time, that looks fun also. Are you going to try and hit that one?

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!!!!

Quick couple of questions:

-- is there a format or certain location for posting weekly exercise times? Is this running time only or does it include gym/weight time?

Thank You
Dan

No. I won't be anywhere near ready by then. I'm going to do my first race on August 29th and that's just a 5K. Then the Blue Moon Wicked 10K on October 30th. Both will be run on the boardwalk.

Did you see my post and link yesterday for Mt. Trashmore?
