Don Imus in trouble again?

snip
I was angry with the media. I was angry with the people (some right here on the DIS) who used his words as an opportunity to say:

They are lazy
They don’t care about themselves
They just want a hand out.

Here's something I don't understand. People praise the things Cosby said. Yet, they complain when they find out that a group that is tackling the issues, is focusing on the black community. If we all agree that there are problems in the black community that need to be solved, why get upset if the mission statement mentions the targeted group?

And some get really upset when/if the group doesn't need, and will not accept, the help of the "establishment." And, diety forgive that the group might be openly afro-centric.

I like Imus. And he HAS been conducting a lot of discussions on race since he's been back on the air, with everybody from Debra Dickerson to Dick Gregory (who apparently didn't have a problem going on the show this morning, and was on for an hour at least a week or two ago).

I think his backtracking is silly and counterproductive in claiming that he thinks the guy is innocent, but it's a typical bit of his to take some outrageous behavior on somebody's part (of any race) and spin it as "so what's wrong with that" -- hence the beginning of this exchange, where he's shrugging off the charges by saying come on, they're in a bar, what do they expect to happen? To me this was just part of that bit, the same way he'd joke that Phil Spector liked to wave guns around his dates and occasionally shoots them, but who hasn't? And then he took it a step further, implying that Jones is only being harassed by the cops because he's black.

I don't understand why now he's trying to spin it as a positive comment towards Jones, but I don't think it was intended to be the racist slam that it's being presented as. I just think it's the first thing that was close enough for the people trying to "catch" him to seize upon.

One African American cast member (Tony Powell) said that what he found racist was that they could look out the window in front of the studio and see all the news trucks doing man on the street interviews... and only stopping the black people, and that he found THAT racist.

Imus becomes the "topic" rather than the thug who was arrested for a shooting at a night club and has a history of six arrests. The Dallas Cowboys have earned the name, the "Dallas Convicts" for a reason. Should he have asked what color he was? Probably not but the bigger concern to me are NFL criminals who make zillions of dollars and get to keep their jobs despite their criminal history.

On Monday’s show, Imus and Wolf were discussing Jones’ request Saturday that people stop using his nickname. Wolf explained Jones was suspended from the NFL following a shooting at a Las Vegas nightclub, and he added that Jones had been “arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.”

Imus’ next words were, “What color is he?” If the answer was "he is white", would anyone have noticed?

I wanted to clear some things up here Dawn and point out some errors you made.

First off the Dallas Cowboys are not known as the Dallas Convicts and currently have one player on their roster who has been in trouble with the law and served time. That's Tank Johnson of the Chicago Bears who after serving his time in the Cook County jail, then released by the Bears, served a 5 game suspension by the NFL, then was signed to a 2 year league minimum contract by Dallas. He has kept his nose clean and so far, made the most of his final chance in the NFL. He was told by the commissioner of the NFL (Roger Goodall) that any more slip ups can mean a life time ban. Tank Johnson was not a member of the Dallas Cowboys when he was arrested and jailed for his mistakes. I think you know that and it's dishonest to lump the Cowboys in with what Johnson had done. He made his mistakes with another team.

Adam Jones is not on the roster of the Dallas Cowboys and has only been cleared by the commissioner of the NFL to practice and work out with the team. He can not play in any games and Roger Goodall says he will make the final decision on September 1st, whether Jones will be allowed to suit up and actually play in regular season, NFL game. A lot can happen between now and then and if Jones so much farts the wrong way he get a lifetime ban as well. He knows this and so does the Dallas Cowboy organization who has surrounded him with security, player development and consulting by "Calvin Hill" who has worked with the team since 1997. Did you know Dawn that the Cowboys lead the league with their player assistance program and is considered an innovation and a model for other teams to follow and copy it? Do you know has said that? Peter King of SI.com and Inside the NFL on HBO. Peter King also said that Adam Jones is in the best possible situation he can be in as a member of the Cowboys. Look it up if you don't believe me, it's all there in print. I tell no lies.

As a fan of the Dallas Cowboys all of my life and a person who follows their every move, I wanted to point out your mistakes concerning them.

Is Adam Jones a punk and a thug? Did he do some stupid things and hang out with the wrong people, hangerons, groupies, etc? Does his behavior mirror the many problems and poor choices young black men make and face in today's society? Yes, but it seems Adam Jones is trying to change his ways and is working out with Deion Sanders to stay on the straight and narrow. From all appearances he's doing a good job, but has a long way to go to repair his image. I'm willing to give him a chance to see if he can make it, but if he goes back to his old ways then he will richly deserve his lifetime ban the NFL will give him. It will be no skin off my rear end if doesn't make it and the Cowboys protected themselves as well, through the draft and with Adam's new contract.

As for Imus, Dawn, you and I both know what he meant and he was stupid for saying what he did. He even looks more foolish by trying to back peddle today and say he was defending Adam Jones and the police were racial profiling him, etc, etc. I'm sorry Dawn, it's a ridiculous story and a truly lame excuse. Both of my 10 year old boys can lie better than that.

Sorry...Pac Man is a thug. Imus is an idiot. And in my opinion, Al Sharpton is a hypocrite.....does that clear up the confusion ;)

I have no problem with that and I think you have hit proverbial nail on the head.

The only thing is you should add that not only is Sharpton a hypocrite, he's an enabler and excuse maker as well. I don't ever recall him speaking out like Bill Cosby did. He's so one sided on just about every issue I ever heard him open his fat yap on.

Al Sharpton looks out for Al Sharpton, first and foremost. Everything else is secondary.

I would agree with you, there disneyfan.....It's just that when phrebert did their (is phrebert male or female) thing on Al Sharpton, I was thinking that for the "h" I would have used "hypocrite."

You can thank the media for that.

I've heard Sharpton speak out about the issues in the black community. He's been going after the rap industry for a few years now. You rarely hear about that in the news.

No, I'm not defending Sharpton.
