It’s Thanksgiving Week, which means it’s time to think about food food food. The one think I love about Thanksgiving is no pressure with gift giving. Don’t get me wrong, giving and receiving gift is fun, but it does add some pressure to Christmas - there’s none of that with Thanksgiving.

This year we are having green bean casserole for the first time in several years and I can hardly wait. My DD22’s BF and his parents and sister are joining us, so I decided to add it to our Thanksgiving menu. We took it off in the past, because some of our normal group doesn’t like it, so I stopped serving it. Our new guests may love it, so that’s why it’s returning (plus, I love it)

So, today, we’re going to find out what you all prefer - plain fresh greens beans or green bean casserole. Before we get started, let’s learn a little about both….

Now that we read all that, let’s find out today, which you prefer to eat on Thanksgiving Day……

Plain fresh greens beans beans vs Green Bean Casserole on Thanksgiving Day or another holiday.
Which would you prefer on Thanksgiving Day or another holiday?
What’s your true opinion of each?
(multiple choice)

*If anyone has a fun twist to making plain green beans or Green Bean Casserole, please post that for us.

For Me…….I will always choose Green Bean Casserole on Thanksgiving Day or any holiday - I love it! I’m a sucker for French Fried Onions - so yummy! For normal every day meals I prefer plain green beans, which are normally frozen. Back when I had a big garden, I grew green beans and those were the best green beans! My mom is making the green bean casserole this year to help me out, which I’m grateful for. I will be making a corn bread casserole.

When I voted, I voted for….i like green beans anytime and I don’t like green bean casserole anytime. I voted that way because as much as I love green bean casserole, I don’t like it anytime due to to much fat and to many calories for just a random day of the week. I only like GBC for special occasions.

This thread must be read by my DH. He loves the stuff; I don't. He plans on making it for the very first time this Thursday. So any pointers will surely be appreciated by him. :thumbsup2

My family does the casserole with frozen peas instead, and I really like it!

But I also like plain green beans (or even better with bacon bits).

I am not a fan of green bean casserole. With that said I’m not a fan of anything made with cream of anything soup, it’s so salty and I try to limit processed foods. DH does likes it and eats it at friends thanksgiving, it is not usually served on thanksgiving unless a guest brings it.

I love fresh green beans, especially southern style but am not a fan of green bean casserole. I haven't had the casserole in maybe 30 or 40 years. It depends on who is cooking as to whether we have the fresh ones southern style (boiled with fat back) or "fancy" sauteed with almonds, etc. I have two brother's who are chefs so they make the "fancy" ones. If it's just hubby and me, I just put them in a pot and boil them with some fat back. I don't boil them until they are mushy like some southern people do, I leave mine a tad crunchy. Heck, I'll even eat canned ones before I'll eat the casserole.

We always have green bean casserole for Thanksgiving. I have found that it comes out better if I use French-style green beans and cook them first, so I do that on Wednesday. For Christmas dinner, we have cut green beans cooked with bacon and onion.

I love love love green bean casserole and I will eat it anytime all the time made with canned green beans I don’t care for it to be made with fresh green beans
With that being said I also enjoy eating fresh green beans or canned green beans anytime and I enjoy eating them cook just about anyway you wanna cook them
It is a vegetable I eat often

I like both somewhat.
No idea what will be for Thanksgiving. DIL is doing the veggie. She mentioned broccoli or green beans (it will not be casserole). I don't like cooked broccoli, so hope for green beans.

An alternate, healthy, allergy friendly version of green bean casserole.

Fresh green beans
Fresh mushrooms - any type you want (I usually choose 2-3)
Fresh onion
Salt/Pepper
Olive Oil
Fried onion topping (as allergy friendly as needed)

Prep the green beans and top with chopped onion and mushroom. Toss with salt, pepper, and olive oil and bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Then pull it out and top with fried onion topping and bake for 5-10 minutes. PS - depending on amount made, you might want to do the initial bake a little longer.

Do this is any proportion you want - my kids like 1/3, 1/3, 1/3, but you obviously can be heavy on the mushroom, or the onion, or the bean...and you can skip a veg if it's hated...

I make this every year for Thanksgiving - it's perfect. It has all the flavor and none of the gloppiness, gooiness, or sogginess...

Plain fresh green beans is my preference, especially roasted or else parboiled and then sauteed. I've also made the recipe just posted above and I like that combo a lot too, though we don't usually add the fried onion topping, it's just the 3 items roasted together for us.

If green bean casserole was served somewhere I'd definitely have some and I like it just fine, it's just not something I would make, and I don't really crave it or anything.

Green bean casserole used to be a family favorite for holidays or anytime. Then food allergies entered the picture and we stopped serving it. One family member has celiacs disease and can't have gluten (wheat). Another family member has a problem with dairy. We tried different work arounds, like a gluten-free mushroom soup, but it wasn't the same. I like to serve food that most people can eat. So, I serve plain veggies and the problem is solved. :)

I love fresh green beans and serve them all the time. :)

Prefer fresh green beans whenever they are served. Never liked those green bean casseroles with the gloppy cream sauce, mushrooms and overcooked beans. Usually there is a reason that is one of the dishes always leftover.

for Thanksgiving it's green bean casserole in our house. the one addition to the recipie I do is the addition of sliced canned water chestnuts-makes no change to the flavor but it adds a crunch factor.

Well...based on slo's pic of the comparison between the two---- We take fresh green beans cut the ends off and boil them, add bacon and dijon mustard in them...pretty sure the bacon negates some of that nutrition part :upsidedow

My mother-in-law and step-father-in-law don't typically do green bean casserole but do now for years like ours with the bacon and mustard. When sister-in-law started adopting her boyfriend's dietary needs based on his religion she stopped eating that (as it has pork) so then we started doing our side along with just canned green beans.

My family flip flopped between having the casserole or not. Fresh green beans were never done, canned might have been.

I like both. Fresh, sauteed quickly to keep the snap, or a few times a year the casserole.
