Where is the best place to get dollars from at the moment (travellers cheques and cash) and how long will they take to arrive?
Also will the US election have any effect, I know this is a difficult one to answer but maybe someone out there can.

Yu can order and collect from the airport from Travelex ($1-77.6) or pay £3.95 for next day delivery from OnlineFx ($1-78.3)

As for the $ rate ... crystal ball time I think ;)

we got ours from online fx they are 1.84$ today and if you order befor 12.30 pm you get them next day

We ordered ours by phoning the bank and then picking up from the branch. I'm just happy at the moment as when we went last in Sept '03 the exchange rate was a miserable $1.50 to the pound. Currenly it's running at $1.80+ to the pound so each pound we have for spending money is worth 30 cents more than last time!

Or to put into a way that my wife loves (and understands), we can take the same amount of spending money as last time and have saved enough to buy 3 x children 5 Day Park Hopper tickets!

Result! :earboy2:

Thomas Exchange are currently offering $1.861 with no comission. Might be worth a try.

Bruce.

They give you a bank account number (I think its the bank of scotland) and you pay your money into their account. They will send you your dollars/travellers cheques as soon as the money has cleared. I used them earlier this year. I received my dollars within a couple of days no problem.
Regards,
Bruce.

We tend to use Marks and Spencers and haven't found anyone on the High Street to beat them.

Currently they are offering 1.837. We don't go until March but I am toying with the idea of changing some money know.

Is the dollar expected to fall further against the pound? Should I wait?

Sam

Many of the high street banks have good dealsnow, and sometimes, like Thomas cook they will price match the best deal.
Lots of different opinons about the dollar, the mail on Saturday reported it would stay weak and might go to $2 to a £, but no one knows, the US fed said last week they were commited to a strong dollar.
in the end its always a gamble, save and 'bank' the good rate as it is, or hang out and see if it goes further. T/CHQ rates are usually better than notes.

We're in the same boat but going in February. The dollar is at its weakest against the pound for almost 10 months. See this graph for details. Its interesting to note how it gained in strength in the next two months going from $1.90 to $1.77. Of course, no one knows for sure which way it will go (except maybe George Souros!) so it's always a gamble when to buy. As I said earlier, I'm just chuffed at getting way over $1.50!

I ordered some today and got $1.8371 to the £ from Travelex.

If you collect your travellers cheques at the airport does that mean if you have any left you need to exchange them at the airport

You can exchange your $$ back to ££ at any Bureau de Change, bank, post office etc. Some places will offer a 'commission free buy back' service where they will buy back any currency commission free if you bought your currency from them in the first place. Not sure if Travelex offer this deal. You would to check the exchange rates though to see if this is a good deal or not.

Thomas Cook will price match any high street rate and if you are changing over £500 into dollars you get an even better rate. Don't know how it works for their travellers cheques as we rely on the credit cards.

:flower1: we always get our dollars from thomas cook they give you 1% more than anyone on the high street try them :flower:

If you got a good $ rate to buy the traveller's cheques, why not just keep them for the next trip? TCs aren't lifed - like Disbey tickets, they last for ever.

Well we're back now and got our traveller cheques and dollars, both US & Oz, from Travelex, looked on line at the usual suspects and they had the best rate and we could pick them up at the airport.
Biggest regret is when we paid for them $1.79 but whilst we were there the dollar dropped badly so we could have used ATMs or just used the card but hindsight is a wonderful thing!
