*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

Hey guys :wave2: I haven't checked on this thread in a while. I started the 10-week program liznboys posted earlier this past Monday. I'm slow as hell though, so I need to work on that. I got new shoes and socks on Sunday and they are a dream. :cloud9: I already feel the difference in my knees and hips.

An interesting thing happened to me on walk/jog (wog?) yesterday...I ran the area surrounding a movie set! For the past couple of weeks the movie Battle: Los Angeles (ironically it's being filmed in LA rather then L.A.) has been filming near me. I keep running into the production trucks while they are wrapping up, but this time they were actually filming something. They were using the golf course by the trails I use and had part of the trail blocked off. The movie stars Aaron Eckhart  but sadly I did not see him (or maybe not so sad because I was a hot, sweaty mess.)

Hi all! We are at HHI DVC now!! I'm posting from my iPhone and my connection may not be the best... But i just wanted to say hi! :)

It's very neat here. It's so Disney-ish and yet not in Disney. The sun was just setting when we arrived and it was so beautiful. Oh! And we saw several dolphins as we crossed the bridge to the island. So pretty!

So I won't be running here afterall... I forgot my running shoes!!!! Ugh! I was a packing maniac this morning but forgot my all important shoes. I dis bring some tennis shoes that I definitely can't run in but I could use an elliptical or bike. I will find some way to get my exercise!! Lol

I'll post replies to everyone later. But welcome newbies!!!! Stick around and post lots! :)))

a special HI to DisneyBride'03...i'm happy you joined us! I saw your last trip pictures from Laura. They were great! And you got the picture of the magical star cocktail-Thank You!!! :).

Ok gotta go. Were having carryout of shrimp and grits from a place next door called Kingfisher...other DVCers have reported it's good.

Hi Liz....as soon as I saw your name....I thought, I'm posting:)

Oh we loved BLT! Hope you are enjoying HHI..booked it for DH's big bday next April with his golfing buddies.

Laura is going to be waiting for me at the end of my 1st 1/2 marathon enjoying that party at EPCOT:)

Ordered the book Marathons for Mortals, ordered new shoes..(Sierra Trading Post has great deals)....I am currently walking on the treadmill ..4 miles in one hour...long way to go...but I will get there:)
What villa size to you have at HHI? I booked DH a 2 bdr for 3 guys total...spoiled brats! lol

Hi everyone! I'm looking forward to hearing lots of great weekend training reports:goodvibes

I just finished an 8 miler in 91 minutes 30 seconds:cool1: I'm so excited because that is a little under 11:30 minute miles and I have never run 8 miles that fast. (And this will be my 3rd half.) I'm not quite sure how I did it, just glad I did! I'm doing another 8 miler next weekend and watch that one will probably take me 2 hours:lmao: Anyway, for now I'm feeling good about things. I hope everyone elses runs go just as well:goodvibes

Liz I'm sure you are having a fabulous time in HHI. I wouldn't worry too much about working out. I never work out on vacation. (I guess I will be doing a small workout in January on vacation;)

Hello all! I have had a lot of challenges trying to get ready to walk my first half: knee problems leading to a arthroscopy inJuly to shave the backside of my patella. Once that was rehabbed I started having serious calf problems....started PT on that and now at least I can walk faster than a 20 minute mile. Today I did my first distance (if you can call it that) - 4 miles. My pace was 16:20. Do you all think I'll be able to do the Donald? Barring any further major impediments that is. My only goal is to finish (aka...not being swept!)
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

Anne

*Apologizing in advance for my long post. You'll understand why by the end of it*

Hi guys. If you really don't mind me posting here, I'll give a training update and a bit of advice that I learned the hard way last Sunday during my first half marathon.

Training update: Because the half marathon was last Sunday, I skipped my normal Monday run (which should have been four miles) and bumped up my normal Wed/Thurs b2b runs to Tuesday and Wednesday. Tues I did six miles and Wed I did four. This morning I got in 13 miles. I plan to do some yoga tonight to stretch out my muscles. My right calf tightened up today during my run. I was able to complete the run and I spent a little extra time stretching it out after but I think that I'm going to have to ice it down for the rest of today.

Advice that I learned: I'm a new runner. I've only been seriously running since mid August. I had no intentions to sign-up for the Mickey, I wanted to do the Donald. The Donald was full so I wasn't going to sign up at all this year but wait until 2011 to do the Donald. Several weeks pass and the Mickey is still open for registration. For some crazy reason I felt compelled to go for the marathon 2010 week-end. So, that's why I'm doing the Mickey. All of this is to explain that I'm a newbie runner w/o much experience under my belt. Last Sunday was my very first race ever. I was ready for it. I did 11 miles the week-end before with no problems and I wasn't nervous at all about doing a half marathon. I was treating it as a training run vs a race. I knew that most people start out too fast so I decided to tag along with the 2:10:00 pace group (averaged out to be 9:55 minute miles). That was a little slower than I normally run so my plan was to pick it up later in the race and come in at a better time.

Starting out was great. There was about 3,500 - 4,000 people in this race. Being my first race, I had to quickly adjust to all of the slower paced runners - or even walkers! - that lined up wrong and were in front of the faster runners. I easily kept up with the pace leader and going into mile 4 I wasn't even breathing hard. It didn't even feel that I was running since I was at a slower pace than normal. My mistake was this: Everyone talks about hydrating and the dangers of being dehydrated during a race. Hardly anyone talks about over-hydrating which is just as dangerous. The water stations began in mile two ( I think. Now I'm fuzzy on this!). They had water and Gatorade. I was using Cliff Shot Blocks so I stuck with water when going through the stations. As we entered a station the pace leader was yelling things such as "Hydrate! It's going to get hot!" Full cups of water would be thrust out toward me. You're only in the water station for seconds. I'm grabbing these full cups of water and trying to down them before I cleared the station. Fast forward a couple of miles and I've drunk way too much water way too fast. My body didn't need this. I should have relied on my training - I didn't drink like this during my training runs. I was just overwhelmed by the confusion of the water stations and the advice from the pace leader so I drank more than I needed to and I washed out all of my electrolytes.

Going into mile 5 my stomach cramped up severely. I was in serious pain. I had to move off to the side and walk some. For most of mile 5 I managed to keep up with my pace team but then I had to make a stop and I lost the pace group at that point. I tried to run again and I had no idea of where on the course (pace wise) I was falling by this point. Suddenly I couldn't breath and I was still in serious stomach pain so I pulled off to the side once again. A woman (runner) stopped to check on me, she thought I was about to pass out. I kept walking so she walked with me. I took some more of the Cliff Shots and some of the stomach pain slowly began to ease. The woman wanted to run again so I joined her at her pace - which was a lot slower than my normal pace so I was able to stay with her w/o any problems. I found out that she started out with the 10 minute mile pace group but was ahead of them. I was happy to hear that. We did about 3 - 4 miles together. I was still taking water at the water stations but only sips this time. Unfortunately, I took one sip to many and the stomach pain came back even more severe than before. I couldn't even power walk at this point, I was in too much pain. The woman slowed down with me and walked a bit. She wanted to run again but I just couldn't. The 10 minute pace group finally passed us and I told her to go on with them so she did. I will never forget her act of kindness that day.

By this point I'm around mile 9 - 10. At one point I just have to stop. I stand there in pain wondering if I'm going to finish this course. It hurt to move. At mile 10 /11 I finish my Cliff Shots and make another stop. Going into mile 11 I'm starting to feel somewhat normal again. By mile 12 I'm able to run/walk to the finish. I came in at 2:27:36 and beat in the last official pace group out on the course. I'm happy that I finished the half marathon under 2 1/2 hours but I was still disappointed in myself for making such a rookie mistake. Honestly, I'm lucky to have finished the course at all. I could have easily been hauled off in an ambulance because of what I did to myself. Being a new runner I understood the cause: I drank way too much water way too fast but I didn't really understand what it was doing to my body. I didn't understand that I had washed out my electrolytes and this is why after I'd take some more Cliff Shots I'd begin to feel a little bit better... that is, until I'd accidently put too much water back into my body again.

I had posted my recount on Sandy's PTR and she suggested that I post it somewhere over here. Since I think there are some newbies (like me) posting on this thread I decided to post this story here for advice of what not to do. But for advice of what to do: Trust your training. Training runs are so important for more than just building up distance. You're also learning how your body works and what you need to do in order to keep it functioning. In January, trust the training. Don't do anything on the course that you didn't do during your training runs.

Stay strict with the training and keep that positive attitude that you have and I know you can. :thumbsup2

Hi everyone! I can't believe how incredibly perfect the weather was this morning for running. Sunny and not too warm - but I still overdressed. Did my 6 miler with some great splits, especially on some of the sections with hills. Got in a couple at 9:42 and 9:22 :) I was trying to finish in under an hour but just as I turned onto my street, I had some chest pain and had to slow it way down. I finished in an hour, exactly. Oh well ... next time :)

Anne - Congrats on your 4 miler! I definitely think you can do the Donald. Keep up with your training and see how things go :) I think if you start further up in your corral, you'll be okay with that pace.

Liz - Sorry to hear you forgot your runners... at least you still have shoes that you use for cross training.

ArelysAdriana - Very cool that you ran by a movie set! Maybe you'll see Aaron Eckhart the next time you pass by. Did you see any cool looking aliens?

Dolce27 - Thanks for the tip about the water and electrolytes. I actually had no idea you could do that by drinking too much water. I'm glad you're okay! It was very nice of the other runner to stop and help out :)

I'm back out for a 3 miler tomorrow morning! Have a great day everyone!

GREAT ADVICE - It's so easy to get caught up in the race magic..

Grats on finishing despite the uphill battle you had to deal with. Luckily you are ok...

ARGH -- that describes my current training..

DH is TDY (military) - has been for the last 2 weeks and will be for this upcoming week and that makes running just so difficult. I had 10 miler on my schedule today, lined up a sitter who never showed - It's not like her and I am hoping she is OK but 3 hours later still haven't heard from her. So it's frustration combined with worry.. and no run. I have a treadmill but OMG - I have never ran almost 2 hours on it and the thought just makes me scream BUT I gotta at least give it a try this after noon. Shame I am not a TV watcher :(

Otherwise the runs I have been getting in have actually been really good..
in 2 weeks I have a challenging 5 mile trail run that I am excited to do -

Hope everyone is doing well as we start hitting the final countdown

Dolce :yay: I also think its great that you are going for the FULL marathon!! :yay: and then you also determined not to use an ipod for the training since you arent going to use it for the race - that little thing, that amazes me!! :goodvibes

Tracy Thanks for posting and managing nametags!! (and I'm so happy NOT to see my name on the list!! ) I hope everyone does mail a request to Tracy - I cant believe how beautiful the tags are - and in a plastic sleeve that has a safety pin - I was expecting a peel on peel off name tag - these are just AWESOME!! Thank you :worship:

I hope everyone here plans on stopping in at Pop on the Friday before the race - its just such a relaxed time - in a nervewracking time! To look around and KNOW these people support "ME" and the these people are all DOING THE DONALD too!! :goodvibes:goodvibes

I dont even realize how shy I feel when I get into these situations - until BAM here I am - I dont know any of these runners... and I tend to really shrink... but I have never felt so welcomed - there truly are no strangers here - just friends you've yet to meet!! :goodvibes

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

Anne

Anne - I KNOW you can DEFINATELY stay the Donald - with a few hints...(from mistakes I made in '08 - )

First - keep training - strive to "maintain' a pace - (I'm still working on this goal btw! I think I'm at a 17 min mile pace - but not really sure!)

2nd - stay focused on the "end goal" which means, dont stop for pictures with characters on the course - get them at the finish line - WITH your medal!!

3rd - when its time to line up - just start observing when people are leaving to line up - be at the top of that corral wave - I was AT THE ROPE - and I'm thinking there were thousands behind me - Dolce talked about staying with the pace she was comfortable with - I wanted to be 20 min AHEAD of the 16min mile person - and I was!

Because of that I made it to Mile 10 and a half before that 16min mile pacer passed me - I couldnt stay ahead of him - I felt so defeated - at mile 11 a sweeper said I had to keep up or would be swept before mile 12 (previous posts here on WISH said the last sweep is Mile 10 - so my mind was to get to mile 10 and I'd be golden because of that my mind had a melt down - if not for the kindness of a stranger, I might have just sat down and quit - but rounding the Mile 11 and half - I could see down hill to the Mile 12 - and our WISH SCREAM TEAM :yay: So I kept putting one foot in front of the other!!

I wont lie - it was grueling those last 3.1 miles -

That's when I realized in my training I never trained right - I just thought this would be "a day in the parks" - my longest "wog" was 5 or maybe 6 miles - and I figured it was probably at a 15 min mile pace - so no worries...

after all - in this area - Chicago land - WINTER is brutal to train in - all the snow and ice, and wind.... :confused3

so I didnt.

Now. I'm back.

and come what may - I dont want to peak at mile 10!!

So for today - I'm going to do 8 miles (the training schedule has most doing 10 today - but my knees and my plantar fascia, I know I wont make 10 today!! I'm also going to try a new route - one that has 4 miles up and then I'll return - so I know in advance I CAN do it!!

Bonsoir,
Last week was my first one over 30k of total running and I am very happy about that.
This week, I have 5 hills, one long run and 2 easy days.
I just hope the weather will stay the same and ,please, I don't want snow yet.
I can't believe that in 9 weeks we will be at Disney World :woohoo:

Diane

Diane ITA with you!!

Last week I ran 5 miles - with scarf gloves, long pants, layers... today - 71 degrees!! That's Chicago area for you!!

I did 8 (DH thinks it may be closer to 9!) the last mile was the worst! My plantar fascia is really paining me even now!! I dont want to walk!! :scared1:

I'm glad I have dh in my corner - it is really hard doing this mile after mile alone!!

Hey everyone! Did a 5K run today with some great results! My time was 28:49 and I had some really great splits! I think it must be the weather - it was perfect for running! I'm going to miss wearing shorts and t-shirts....

Sandy - Glad you have DH to run with you! I find running partners always make the time go by faster. Plus you have someone to make sure you actually get out there!

Diane - I didn't realize that it was only 9 weeks away - wow!

:cool1: Vicky that's AWESOME!! seriously!!

(and DH doesnt run 'with' me - he just encourages me - much like the online community! He only "needles" me about getting out there - by just going out and doing his own thing - he doesnt ever ask or tell me to get on with my training - Jillian on Biggest Loser gets into my head worse than dh!! :rotfl2: But dh is an emotional support nonetheless!!)

Hi everyone. So, I started posting here a while ago and then stopped. Sorry 'bout that! We got h1n1 in our house and it was TERRIBLE. I think we're finally coming out of it. With four kids down at one time, I thought I was going to lose my mind.

Anyway, my training has been going well. I had to decrease my miles a bit the last two weeks due to this flu (I didn't get it - all the kids and dh did). But, dh bought me an iPod for our anniversary and I run a LOT faster with music! Who knew? I did a 10K yesterday and finished in 54:54!! I've never been that fast in my life!!!

Anyway, I'm going to try to catch up here today. (In between getting caught up with housework and washing sheets of the now-healthy children!)

I love your posts:) They are really helping me....as I am not signed up for this race, am going to sign up , one week from today, for the night owl wine and dine 1/2......I am doing my first 5K (walking) here in Lockport in a month:)

I love your tips!

I'm really loooking forward to this. I was with my TNT coach yesterday and following her training plan, I am going to try to get to 14:30 mpm over the next two months. That means making sure that I get in all of my weekday workouts too. I'm going for a PR, but I want to be able to stop for a picture in front of the castle too! For the princess half I didn't stop for pictures until I was inside Epcot.
