*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

We have another front coming through today and it sure is nice being able to get on the treadmill and not worry about the weather. We have been doing our long runs outside and so far the weather has cooperated. I will be praying hard for race day to be dry. Have any of you had to run in rain and do you do anything different to handle the wet? :confused3 This weekend will be a five mile run. It is supposed to be cold, I can handle that okay. Is anyone going early? We are arriving Sunday before so we can spend some time in the parks. I haven't made all of our ADRs because we can't decide about the dining plan. Fun decisions at least.

Have any of you had to run in rain and do you do anything different to handle the wet?

I did a 5K and 2 LRs (10 miles) in the POURING rain. It really wasn't that bad once I was soaked through. :lmao: It was pretty warm out and the rain was kind of nice. The only thing I did differently was to put my cell phone and ipod in plastic bags so they wouldn't get ruined. I expected blisters, but didn't have any problems with my feet.

Last week I was supposed to do 10 miles (only did 8.5). It was cold and misty and not very pleasant.

Around here I generally just have to worry about snow and ice. I don't mind the snow, but that ice makes things difficult. I always have a rough time doing my LR before Donald because of that.

ORN: I was supposed to do 10 miles last Saturday and it didn't go well. I managed to do about 8 miles at a good pace, but quickly died out after that and didn't finish. This is why I always schedule at least two 10 milers before a race. The first one is ALWAYS terrible and then I do fine with my second attempt. Must be a mental thing. Anyway, I broke down and started using the treadmill again because it is too dark at night for me to run outside. I really hate the treadmill. Did 5 miles on Sunday, miles on Tuesday, and should do 4 or 5 tonight. I've got my 2nd 10 miler scheduled for Saturday and then I get to taper for a week before the monumental half in Indy.

I've run in the rain, but I draw the line at lightning. It was during the summer so cold wasn't a worry. I don't know how I'd handle 38 and raining. Curl in a ball and cry? I wear double layered Wright Socks. I've not had blister problems wet or dry. Running is new for me. Ice will be a new adventure, too. Wheee!

We're not going early, but staying on after a few days past marathon weekend. I haven't been to WDW since 2005. I'm excited to be heading back.

Today's treadmill torture was three miles... very consistent. 12:22, 12:10 and 12:20. Saturday is five miles for me, too. Supposed to start out in the 30s, but should be dry. Hopefully the trail will get a chance to dry out a little. At least it will be light out. During the week I run before work and there are very dark gaps on the trail. Sometimes I don't see the puddles coming. Very rude surprise.

Great time improvement MapleGirl! Make them draw straws for meals.

Good training everybody!

Ronda

This morning I ran 5 miles in 54:35. After that we went to the running store and picked up my sons and my race packets for Saturday, so we're all set!

MapleGirl: Hang in there with all the family drama and planning and school!
Congrats on the 12.5 min mile!
I can't believe it's almost November either!!?!!

Vicky: Oh that's good it wasn't your Achilles, plus nothing serious!! I had to look up the soleus muscle. I've learned so much since I started running! haha How did your workout go today?

SGcruiser: I ran in the rain once. I did a 5K at a park and it wasn't raining when I began, but then it came down, pouring!! I didn't want to stop though, I was making good time. lol It was partly on dirt trail and I was more worried about my shoes getting dirty than anything else. :) My dh and boys were there too and we were all soaked and trying to get into our van. It was crazy. But the running itself in the rain was fine actually.
That's great you'll be in WDW beginning Sunday, I wish I could do that! It'll only be a two night trip for me. Jenny (dismagiclover) and I will be in MK after the race so that'll be our park day.

dislvr74: "It really wasn't that bad once I was soaked through."

Two things:

1) How do you dry out your shoes after a wet run? The one time I needed to do it, I put them on the rack in the dryer on low for a short time. Didn't dry them all the way, just gave them a start. They were fine, but I know there must be other ways better for the shoes?

2) I think our treadmill just broke... My son was on it doing his last training run before Saturday's race, and he saw a big spark (I wasn't in the room) and then the speed went up to 10mph by itself! Freaked him out and he came flying down the stairs calling for me. It blew the circuit, I reset it, turned it on and then when I hit START it blew it again. So I'm not sure what's wrong with it?!

liznboys-oh, that does sound like your treadmill is dead. sorry to hear that. I don't put my shoes in the dryer. I just take the insoles out and let them air dry. If they are really, really soaked I stuff them with newspaper.

Liz Awesome on the 5 mile run in less than 11 minute miles. I'm starting to worry again about you leaving me in your dust;) Good luck on your 5K. Tell DS 10 good luck too. I don't think my DD would be up for a 5K though she does run a speedier mile than I do:confused3
Bummer about your treadmill. I have no idea how to go about fixing them. Looks like you and DS3 will be doing plenty of runs in the jogging stroller. Good for building arm strength I guess:laughing:

I'm scheduled to do a 7 miler tomorrow. Hopefully it goes well. I'm hoping to finish it in under an hour and a half.

I pulled out the insoles, loosened the laces and stood up the tongue, set them in front of a small (12") fan that I keep at work. When I was ready to leave that afternoon they were dry. I think getting the insoles out would be most important.

Bummer about the treadmill. If you have to go looking for one, check craigslist. Lots of regrets and good intentions for sale there.

I've got five miles tomorrow. New territory.

Liz,

I have run 3 1/2 marathons this year. I have used the marathon rookie 1/2 training schedule for all 3 races. I too, am starting my training for the 2010 Donald on Monday the 2nd. Good Luck, you will absolutely have a BLAST runnning at the World.

Stan

So we have a new (to us) treadmill now! My dh did some research and found that we needed a new belt for our broken one...and it would cost a lot to replace. Then he checks out Craigslist and a new listing for a tm was on there that sounded good (and inexpensive). He went there this afternoon and bought it! It's in our garage now...have to figure out if we want to get rid of the old one (which is a nicer one and maybe we will replace the belt at some point?!) and where to put the new one... I never thought I'd have two treadmill's (working or not) in my house. I find it comical! lol

Stan/goofy57: Hi! :) That's wonderful you've used the rookie plan a few times, so you must like it, and I'm happy to meet you. Great that you're starting on Monday, too. Keep me posted on how you're training runs go, I'd love to have someone on here doing the same plan at the same time as me!! :)

dislvr74, Jenny and Ronda, thanks for the replies. Good luck with your long runs this weekend! :wizard:

Alrighty, I better get to sleep. We have to leave here at 6:30am tomorrow to get to our 5K! eek! It's going to be a looooooong day tomorrow, but fun! :yay: I'll try to pop on here midday and tell you how our race went.

:cheer2: Liz :cheer2: Hope it was a great race!!

I'm seriously trying to figure out where I "fit in".... I just am overwhelmed. I am glad I have the Donald to 'try and focus' on... that beacon on the horizon so to speak...

I just have always HATED running - even when I was young, fit, and happy-go-lucky college person! (took it as a class!) So my mental mind sat now that I'm old, fat and lazy is really blowing up!

I would quite before I ran in the rain - dh always runs!! Last week I got my 5 miles in before the rain, it was gorgeous (I took pictures) but dh left after I returned, all soaked - it rained... AND ITS GETTING COLD HERE!! :sad2:

If it rains Jan 9, I really dont know if I would do it or not. and I know that is SO WRONG!...

Stan

would you mind posting a link or a weekly schedule?

I'm just going out and doing what I can - pushing myself as much as I can!

The ipod does help!

I love the Judds "I know where I'm going" good upbeat
Off Kilter - Run Run Runaway - another good beat song!
Shania Twain UP
Martina McBride Happy Girl...

I also have some great upbeat Clay Aiken and Donny Osmond tunes!! :rotfl:

I have a few playlists - 1 playlist has the faster beats to try and keep my pace up - and then I throw a couple of Disney tunes in for about my mile 4 to get me focused on the prize! (Mile 4 is where you see the MK!! and where I get bored to tears and want to go home!)

I live in the Chicago area - so snow and ice is around the corner... but for now - here are some of my route pictures - across the street is the town park - (I didnt notice my dd messed with my setting until the run was almost over! :sad2:)

Myrunpath020.jpg

Nothing is marked - dh has a garmin and I use a pedometer (but I've lost it)

Myrunpath001.jpg

The path is well lit for night running - and the police patrol it - so its safe!

Myrunpath006.jpg

Here's the "Kid's Kastle Park" I imagine running into MK Cinderella's Castle - to keep my goal front and center!

End of my run - the road towards my house!
Myrunpath015.jpg

These were taken on Thursday - with all the rain since, there isnt a lot of color on the trees!!
Myrunpath021.jpg

So I'm glad I snagged these -

And thanks for asking - it was actually my motivation Thursday to "get out there"!!

also - dh (well, he is the runner geek!) researched running in ice - and he took an older pair of running shoes and put screws in them - the short - pointy screws - they 'clamp' into the ice and prevent sliding - he says they work fairly well!!

(I'm pretty sure he got the idea thru the internet!!)

for me it really makes me laugh!!! :rotfl2: I'll just stick to the treadmill if its that bad - but our winters havent been that cold, or snowy - this year is going to prove differently I have a feeling!! :sad2:

and I'm currently doing 17 min miles - which got me extremely discouraged - so I quit.

Then I realized if I get there early - and start out early to the corral and I'm the first person in my corral - I could get ahead by 20 min - and that could keep me ahead of the sweeper..

so I'm back - I have to play mind games - IF I keep up the training I'm thinking I can do a 16 min mile - but I tend to get discouraged too easily!

Sandy Love the pictures. Those fall colors are just beautiful. I'm with you on running in rain or ice. I won't do it. Luckily it doesn't get really wintery here in Maryland until January so hopefully I'll be able to get in my training. Don't give up. Just keep chugging along. Think of how good it will feel to have that medal placed around your neck:goodvibes

Liz I'm waiting for the 5K report and hooray for finding a treadmill!

I did a 7 mile run today in 81 minutes which I felt great about. It was perfect running weather too. Upper 50's and cloudy. It would be great if we had that kind of weather in Florida on Jan. 9, but I don't think we'll get that lucky. I then went and watched two soccer games in the gentle rain/mist and now I'm tired out. And we still have trick or treating ahead of us. I think I'll sleep good tonight!

Yea! for recycled treadmills! You can always put yours on craigslist. I love craigslist. Also looking forward to a race report.

I wanted to get out and take pictures along my route, but most of my runs are now in the dark. Big rains this week have taken down all but a few leaves so it's not much to look at.

I did five miles today. My longest run to date. Felt pretty good. My mile times were the same as what I've been doing at four miles. I went a bit too far though. Probably an extra quarter mile.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend of running!

Ronda

Hey everybody!

My 10K is today and it's raining. UGH!!! I'll let you all know how I make out!

You are all doing so well! Kepp up all the hard work :)

Thanks Jenny good weather until Jan in Maryland - sounds heavenly!!

Ronda Good for you on the 5 miles!!

Liz :cheer2: Hope it was a good 5K

Lynn hopefully it stopped raining by the start of your 10K!!

Dh says that you get wet anyway if you are working hard, so a little bit of rain is no worries!! lol -

its the thunder and lightning that are show stoppers!! (no go!)

The sun came out today - after my 5 I should do at least 2 today... :wizard:

Okay so I didn't do that bad... could have been better. I finished in 51:09! Placed 28 out of 225 in my age group, and 498 overall out of 2942 runners. It was tough running up hill on the Ben Franklin bridge. We ran it back and forth so had to run up hill twice, lol!

Liz it only rained a little so it wasn't that bad! Thank God, lol!!

It was such a nice race. There were a ton of cheerleaders cheering the runners on. They really help to give you an extra boost while running. I love it. I got so emotional when I crossed the finish line. It was just such a great atmosphere. Oh and I was so excited when I saw they were giving out medals, haha! I can't wait to wear that Donald Duck medal!!!!

Lynn - This is the email address I used last year for my proof of time disneysports@trackshack.com

Katie/Syko - Speaking of skipping in a race... I thought I read somewhere about a runner who juggles while doing races. I can't remember where I saw it though. It made me smile because I'm fairly uncoordinated :)

Hey! I just sent my proof of time. Have you done it by emailing them before? I'm hoping there won't be any problems.

:cheer2: Yah Lynn! That is a great time. If you keep that pace you can do the half in under 2 hours with minutes to spare! :woohoo:
