Le Cellier Steakhouse, Lunch, 09-19-08
Today was our first day at Epcot and we spent our whole day here!
We started out at park opening and spent the morning catching all the attractions in the Future World area.
When we arrived at Canada, we found ourselves to be very surprised by how empty it was here, only one store left open in the pavilion area, and a stand area at the bottom in the walkway around World Showcase.
Our reservations were for 11:40am. We arrived at around 11:20 and checked in, we were on of the first few groups to check in and waited in the area next to the podium.
As we waited all of the CM's came to the area and did a performance of the national song for Canada.... "O Canada", those CM's who spoke Canadian/French sang in their native language. This was a nice start to the meal, and if you get a chance to be there for restaurant opening you will get to see this.
For beverages we ordered smoothies, this is one of the restaurants that allows them as your beverage on the dining plan.
I hate to say it, but I really don't understand what all the fuss about this place is. I suppose that I am glad so many people find so much pleasure in it, but our experience was not that great.
I would say our biggest problem with our experience was the service, simply awful. Our server took forever to bring our drinks and after that she came back and asked if our appetizers were good?... we hadn't even got them yet...LOL, then after that we seen her once for the rest of the meal.
Next thing about this place, we just wasn't impressed with the food. I mean there wasn't really anything wrong with it, but it was just not great or even memorable.
Well, take a look at our meals and I will give more info along the way.
The Bread
We really enjoyed the pretzel bread and as much as we wanted more of it, we knew that saving room for our meal would be our smartest choice.
Appetizer
DD
Prince Edward Island Mussels - Served in a broth of coconut milk with celery, shallots, ginger, garlic, and rice wine. - $11.99
When these were brought out, JoJo was taken a bit by the amount you get... there are plenty of these to go around! She ate all of them but didn't really like the sauce, because she thought it was too spicy. I tried it and thought that it was OK, but glad I didn't order them.
DW
Tomato Stack - Made with caramelized onions, cucumbers, crumbled blue cheese, and Yuzu vinaigrette. - $8.99
Nothing negative about this dish... cheese, tomatoes, and cucumbers... all on Mary's favorite list, and this app was gone before anyone could blink.
ME
Duck Two-Ways - Confit and Rillettes with marinated green apples and apple gastrique. - $12.99
I am not normally a fan of duck, but the appetizer menu didn't really appeal to me all that well, and this was the best pick for me. The duck had decent flavor and was tender.
Entrees
DW
Le Cellier Mushroom Filet Mignon - Served wild mushroom risotto and white truffle-herb butter sauce. - $25.99
Mary made a substitution for the risotto and got the cream cheese mashed potatoes. The filet was nothing special and lacked any memorable flavor, it was a piece of meat. The potatoes were good, but were not as flavorful as we were expecting.
ME
Pan-seared Halibut - Topped with tomato confit served over braised red beets. - $24.99
I did not want to start my day out by trying to chew a steak and strike a nerve in my tooth so I went with the fish. I like beets and this dish was not bad, the tomatoes on the top were sweet and chewy. After tying small bites of the ladies steaks, I was happy I chose the fish.
DD
New York Strip Steak - Served with balsamic red onions, watercress, and roasted Yukon potatoes finished with Bercy butter. - $29.99
Again... JoJo made the substitution and got the cream cheese mashed potatoes, and she too was hoping for more flavor. Ok.. I make a mean cream cheese mashed potato dish at home quite often and it is always a big hit with big flavor, so maybe that is the problem... they didn't measure up to mine, guess I can't complain too much about that. The steak was just fine, but just like the filet, a piece of meat and not memorable.
Desserts
DD & DW
Chocolate "Moose" - Chocolate Mousse rolled in Toasted Chocolate Crumbs with Maple Leaf Antlers $5.99
This dessert is much bigger than we thought it would be, we have seen pics on here before our trip and they always seemed to make this thing look pretty small, but the size was perfect!
ME
Chocolate-on-Chocolate Whiskey Cake - Chocolate cake brushed with Canadian whiskey, layered with chocolate mousse, and finished with honey thyme anglaise. - $7.99
I am not a big fan of cake, so I was nervous about trying this, but wanted to try the signature dessert. It was much better than I thought it would be and the layers of mousse made the perfect balance to offset the cake. More of the sauce would have been nice, this was very good.
Beverages
DD Chocolate Raspberry Shake - Rich chocolate with a blend of raspberry puree. - $4.29
DW Chocolate Raspberry Shake - Rich chocolate with a blend of raspberry puree. - $4.29
ME Mango Smoothie - With a splash of cranberry. - $4.29
Both flavors were good, but I liked the Mango better than the chocolate. It reminded me of the Fruitisia frozen drinks from Taco Bell, but better.
Beverage $ 12.87
Food $ 134.91
Tax $ 9.61
Total $ 157.39
Service
While I don't think that this is typical based on what everyone else says.... this was the absolute worst service we received on the whole trip. What I should say is lack of service from our server. To put it in perspective, we received better service every buffet we were at! This is one of 3 locations on our whole trip that the servers gratuity was adjusted in a negative way, this server almost got nothing, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that.
Atmosphere
A fairly nice place, but nothing impressive. It is a small restaurant in comparison to many others which probably is a large contributing factor for the difficulty in getting reservations. The decor is nice.
Food
While there are some good highlights here, we were not at all impressed and thought that most things lacked originality and flavor. The one flavor that does come to mind, is that there was a large use of pepper. The presentation was not horrible but could use some more effort. As you read through the different reviews by our family, keep in mind that we do not normally use any type of flavor enhancement on the food, such as steak sauce, butter, or salt, once the food reaches the table. We rely highly on the cook to provide the flavors for us, and I think that there was a failure to tease our palates here.
Overall
Due to the service, we did not enjoy this meal. Even if the service would have been any where near decent, I still don't understand the rave of this place. So... will we return? We might try to give it another chance sometime, but there is no hurry to return. I wouldn't suggest this place to people, but I wouldn't necessarily try to scare them away either. If you get a good server and aren't looking to be dazzled, I think you could be perfectly happy here.
