I signed up through my local county volunteer organization. I will be spending MLK Day assisting at a Children's event. I couldn't think of a better way to spend MLK Day. I am very excited. I volunteer at a local state park and the libraries and just thought this sounded like an interesting opportunity. Give a Day has certainly opened my eyes to what is available in the community. I haven't got the information to get the ticket so hopefully I will after I volunteer which is completely understandable.

Wish me luck.:goodvibes:goodvibes

Has anybody else taken part?

I am actually taking part in the give a day get a day as well. I signed up to make baby blankets for sick preemies. So today is a big crocheting day. I have to drop off my blankets Sunday.

Good luck to you and I think this is a very nice disney offer.

I signed up to do an inner city gardening project but I can't do anything until March. It was one of the few that my 8 year old could do with me

I am doing the Project Linus. It was my only option. I have to send the blankets across country. I want to do this. I love the concept but I am a little jealous when I see other working in there community and I can't help out in my community when I know there are people in need in my own city.

I signed my family up for one project on MLK day and just received confirmation via email that it has been cancelled. Luckily I had already signed up for a second opportunity in February...and I hope the same thing doesn't happen to it. :(

My "Give a Day" is really like 2 hours and is something I do, anyway. Was very happy to see it on the list. :) It's work done locally, but the folks who benefit from it aren't in the U.S. Folks in the U.S. are already lucky enough, insofar as this goes.

We sort medical supplies that for various reasons can't be used in the U.S. The stuff is very usable, though, and can be sent to third world countries and put to good use. I hope some of this stuff has made its way to Haiti.

eta: I checked and 26 pallets of supplies are either in or en route to Haiti now.

we volunteered as well with the Cancer society....we organized a fundraising event at a local basketball game. We just printed off our tickets and leave Saturday for Florida!!!

I'm volunteering at our neighborhood food bank and I'm very excited as well just to learn about the different options there are out there. Even though we get one voucher, I'm hoping to do this a couple of times though my community.

I'm wondering if anyone plans on turning their voucher into an annual pass? That's what we're hoping to do, and while it says you can do so on their website, I'm just wondering if anyone's done this already?? (yes, I know we're only 19 days into the new year!!) I guess I'm just skeptical that they'll give me $75 off the price of an annual pass (a Florida resident one at that.)

I would love to hear how this process is going for everyone.

I don't see why they wouldn't they turned my $79 one day ticket into an annual pass (once I paid the additional $$$)

Thanks! I really don't see why they wouldn't either, but just think they're giving me a day, would they actually give that day back in the form of credit!!

Guess it goes back to that saying, there's no such thing as a free lunch! :lmao:

Did our service for Give a Day, Get a Day this weekend. There were supposed to be 15 volunteers and I was so mad when only 6 of us showed up at 9am. I felt they were giving us Disney-lovers a bad rep  Okay, I may take this Disney thing too personally :lmao: As it turns out there were 2 postings and the other one was for 10am, and the volunteer coordinators didn't know. ;)

The agency runs a green demolition outfit, with community gardens, etc. Us early birds, worked inside helping at their partially renovated office. We did a lot of printing, cutting, laminating, folding for a big promo they're having next weekend. Extreme Makeover did a house in Buffalo a few weeks ago and the episode airs on Sunday (24th). The agency did the demolition of the house in 15 hours, which is a record, and was the first green demo that Extreme Makeover has ever done. There's a gala-gala-do at the theatre downtown to celebrate and watch the episode - many "firsts" were done for this locale so the epsidode is 2 hrs. We did the flyers, etc that are going to be handed out at this event, plus things they need for their spring campaign. :goodvibes

I also sealed the tile grout in the bathroom for them and was going to grout the bathroom tiles downstairs but they couldn't find the trowel for it...but I prepped it so they're ready to go as soon as they find their tools :upsidedow

Others who came later, worked in the expansive warehouse/store: unloading trucks, helping with compost and snow removal, taking hardware off doors, etc. It was a good time, esp. since 3 staff were celebrating their birthdays so we got to eat Actually, one of the young volunteers, a 10 yr old girl, frosted the cakes for them. princess:

This is a fab campaign for Disney to run. We let the agency know to call us if they need help in the future, and kept our original slot to help out at a food bank in May. GaDGaD is going to really raise awareness for people to get out into their communities :thumbsup2

With realistic expectations, everything went very smoothly for this service work. I even rec'd the e-mail for our vouchers today. :yay:

cheers,
:flower3:
