Dog with no teeth. Help!!

On the food... I like the idea of moistening the dry food he is used to. I also second the suggestion of Halo Spot's Stew if you want to try a canned food.

Question - did he go in with two canine teeth and come back with only one? Can you tell if the one is completely gone or just broken off?

Alright - how incredibly crazy weird.

I think I'd be psycho mad before I was worried about what food to give them.

Soak his hard food in some chicken broth before you give it to him.

Then find a lawyer.

This thread is seriously bizarre. OP I have no idea how you can be so laid back about the situation. If one of mine were missing so much as 1 tooth when they got back from the vet, my butt would be at the office demanding answers, apologies, and restitution if needed.

If my dog was missing all of his/her teeth, I would be doing all of the above plus considering legal and disciplinary action.

One of our cats did have to have one of his canines (or is it called a feline in cats - ha ha) removed. When he came home, he was woozy and groggy from the anesthesia. He had a stitch that we had to keep an eye on. And he was on antibiotics to stave off any secondary infection.

We now have a new nickname for him - Elvis - since he does the lip curl thing now that he is missing a tooth.

You seem pretty laid back about the whole thing, honestly. That is a pretty major surgical error, if it really happened. No, they can't put teeth back in. But, that doesn't mean the dog should be suffering with no rimidyl or other pain meds, no medication to treat infection, no advise on how to suddenly treat a dog whose went to the vet with no condition other than needing to be brushed and being old.

Yeah, I agree... if it even happened. 41 posts and I have never seen you on the Dis before, but whatever.

How would YOU feel if all but one of YOUR teeth were just pulled? You'd be in some pain! I am sure your dog is, too! Aren't you at all worried about that? Or how such a mistake happened?

Something is definitely weird about this thread..just sayin'.

I'd be furious, and I'd sue them so fast, their heads would spin! :headache:

OP, how can you be so blase about this? This is your furry baby! If you don't stand up for him, who will?

Or are you pulling our collective leg?

i feel like i could recognize my animal, and i'm sure the op could too. so i don't think she could have gotten the wrong animal. :confused3

I would be at the vet's office demanding answers, but then again, I'm an attorney.;)

ok- IF they took teeth out, they would need her permission as well as a signed document. I don't understand what has happened here, but signing on to see what the OP discovers from her vet.

BTW-if we have a pet in for a surgery and notice a bad tooth or retained baby tooth, we MUST call the owner for the ok to take it out.

Yes Unfortunately Vets do make mistakes at the costs of our poor little furrbabies.

I had this happen to me not so long ago. I had a female Bengal Kitty who I was bringing in the vet to have a bath and boarding for a couple days while going away...well when I returned from vacation I got a phone call from said vet claiming that the procedure went well but he found something rare that the cat that I had was neither female nor male, she was more female than male but she had no uterus...well for more than one reason I was totally confused...She went in for only a bath and to be boarded for a couple days, why was he telling me that she was missing reproductive organs??!?! How would they know that??? Well come to find out, they had spayed her while she was in!!! :scared1: I didn't know what to say or think, she was NOT going in to get spayed!!:sad2: Then he proceeds to tell me that my kitty breed (the Bengal breed) were notoriously bad/ill mannered and she would most likely NEVER be a good kitty and we should consider getting her put down!!:sad1: After crying getting off the phone with him and talking to hubby and DMIL (who I love like a mother) I wasn't sure which I was more upset about. The fact that they spayed my kitty without my consent or the fact that he was telling me that I should have my kitty put down?!?!!? Needless to say I was VERY angry with this vet and after talking to them, I never had to pay any vet bill for her and I took her away NEVER to bring her back again :sad2:

Thankfully that vet sold his business to another nice vet who is much more friendly and they ALWAYS call and ask before doing anything to our pets. They also have to have written permission to do anything. But I totally understand how OP must feel but I would dominantly bring it up to them to see what you can do for your poor pup.

Well actually he has one tooth.
I had my 14 year old dog boarded this weekend and he was also groomed while he was there. My husband picked him up yesterday after work and when I saw him I noticed something looked different about him. He then opened his mouth and I noticed he had no teeth!:scared1: I felt inside his mouth and it was all gums except one canine tooth on top. He had all his teeth when I brought him in.
I called the vet this morning and he said they checked his teeth when he came in and the groomer said she didn't notice anything wrong with his teeth. We didn't get billed for teeth pulling and they have no explanation for what happened.
I don't have a clue how much to feed him or what kind of care he now needs. My (ex) vet told me he can still eat dry food, he can swallow it whole. That just seems wrong.
Does anyone have dogs with no teeth? What do I feed him? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

This is absolutely BIZARRE!!!

OP, you need some answers to this mystery. ::yes::

I second what another poster said, could it be that the dogs gums are so swollen that they're hiding his itty bitty teeth?? Poor baby. I hope you get some answer too. I can't imagine how I would feel if that were my dog.

Truely strange thread. Just not getting the OP. I hope the OP is pulling our collective legs. If not:

She has been given the wrong dog to take home and doesn't realize it (very weird), and is more concerned with food than missing teeth (even weirder), or has the most amazing vet in the world who can extract teeth with no obvious signs and no charge for the extractions (the weirdest)!

Just saying.

In terms of feeding the poor thing, try cat/kitten food. It's typically soft flakes of fish and as such is nutritious AND easy to chow down!

My cat had all her teeth except her canines pulled due to a bad dental infection and she will eat anything not tied down! I feed all my cats wet food in the morning, and leave dry food out all day and she eats that fine. She also sneaks food and eats it and more than once has gotten hold of a chicken leg bone and somehow ate part of it!

OP, your dog needs to be on antibiotics if they pulled teeth, or even if the gums are swollen so you can't see them. Mouth infections are nothing to play with.

OP, this is one of the strangest stories.

Maybe it's just me, but if I found out that my animal was brought home and all the teeth were missing, I would be on the phone with the vet IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

My first thought wouldn't be, "what kind of food should I feed", it would be, "where the hell is my dog's teeth!!!!"

Someone would have some 'splainin to do. And it sure as hell better be good!

Sorry about this crazy thing that happened. Unbelievable!! I am not sure I would do the dry food thing, unless maybe moistened with broth? The vet suggetsed chicken & rice cooked together and soft for our older dog (who had different problems), so maybe that would work for your dog? Good luck!

Editing after reading some of the other responses to say that I am not sure I would sue; you are correct in that the teeth cannot be replaced. However, I would do as you have done and change vets. I would also look into reporting this to the regulatory/ licensing board. They need to be aware of the extreme negligence of this practice!
