gotta love the tiitle to my thread, huh??????

anyway, we did it....we just got our kids a dog. He is 7 weeks old and the cutest little thing...but will grow up to be a BIG bull mastif.
but anyway, I want to start out doing things right from the get go.....one HUGE thing I am worried about is dog smell. I want the house to NOT smell like dog. any tips and advice....especially from people with large breed dogs. I am going to start to look into getting one of those ionic breeze things and defintiely getting a DYSON vacuum. but any tips from dog experts out there on any products, etc. to use in the house?????

Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Never, ever, ever let the dog pee on the rug. If he does, it's over. You will have "the smell."

Keep the dog bathed and brushed regularly. I go to plenty of people's houses who have dogs and there is no smell.

The less carpet you have, the better. Keep a can of Febreze around. Wash the dog's bedding often. Don't let him on the furniture.

Do an internet search and buy some "mistermax anti icky poo" for the occasional cleanup. It's also good for the occasional vomit and milk clean up.

I agree about the less carpeting you have, the better your chances of a dog-scent free home.

The anti icky poo (aka AIP) will save carpet if treated early and as directed. I worked in disaster clean-up and AIP is a tremendous commercial grade weapon.

I agree about the carpeting...we moved in July, and our entire house, except the 2 kids rooms and the playrooms which are carpeted, has either tile or hardwood floors! We have 2 Golden Retrievers and people comment all the time on how our house does not smell like dogs at all! That being sad, our dogs get groomed about every 3 weeks so that may have something to do with it also! We have a pool and they swim in the summer, and are not allowed inside until they are dry, so there is no wet dog smell either!

You got a Mastiff and are worried about smell?:lmao:

Don't they slobber & drool 24/7??? I would cover all the furniture with plastic.:lmao:

Congrats on your puppy!!!:yay:

Wash dog, wash dog, wash dog - OFTEN. (And NEVER let a wet dog on the couch. We learned this the hard way. Buh-bye couch. :sad2: )

Wipe off wet paws when he/she comes in from outside on rainy/snowy days.

Actually, wash paws often. (The majority of our dogs stench comes from his stinky paws. :confused3 )

Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle are your friends! Use them in the case of accidents. They soak right down through the carpet and pad and eat up the urine smell. They work on any organic stain including blood (ask me how I know - DH thought cutting dog nails on the carpet was smart... :rotfl: )

As long as you keep your soon-to-be big boy nice and clean, you should have no worries! I have 4 dogs and a cat so I am probably losing the dog smell war. Right now I do not allow the dogs into the guest side of the house. That seems to really cut it down. Also when he gets bigger always carry a trusty drool towel! It'll save you from getting slobbered.

Good luck to you and we need to see pics of this little smooshy-face!!!

Tracy

you also have to be prepared for the DOOL, and LOTS of it!!! :rotfl:
we have shar pei's and they drool alot. but nothing compared to a bull mastif
