Dog options...

Were considering taking our spoiled rotten, solid white Golden Retriever with us this trip. My argument is that I would PREFER she spent the night in our room, rather than a kennel.

At Myrtle Beach theres many hotels that let you take your dogs into the room with you, but at Disney, I'm not seeing that as an option.

Dont get me wrong, I see the point of not allowing it. Dogs can shed (oh boy can they!!!) and do worse than shedding, but ours is kinda... well, spoiled. Perhaps she has US a little spoiled too.
Is there ANYWHERE on Disney property where your dog can spend the night with you? How about Ft Wilderness? Any options there?

I'm kinda firm on wanting to stay on property.

What are your kennel experiences?
I'm all ears!

Only Fort Wildreness, in your own camper, not the cabins. Sorry.

I would find a pet-sitter or a kennel (get references) you can trust and leave her home. I understand fur-babies , I have 2 of my own. But it is not fair to her to keep her penned up in a hotel room all day. Plus if she's not used to it, she may bark and disturb the other guests.

Leave her home!

I wasn't considering leaving her in the room all day; only at night when we are there. Besides, she would LOVE the kennels. She loves to bark at other dogs. Shes obsessed with it. (That and chasing birds) So the kennel I figure she'd enjoy. It was the night time part I was hoping to fix.
WL... I too had read no pets at the cabins. I thought i read somehwere that they could stay in an RV, but even if I had an RV (which I dont) I wouldnt want to leave her cooped up in it all day either.

We'll probably just leave her home. Ive been working all week on the ultimate dog house! It has running water and a heater with a thermostat. My job consists of electrical wiring, so I know its all safe. Water cant get to the heater, and the heater cant get to water. Its a low wattage heater too, so she cant get burnt.

I have someone who can feed and love on her. My neighbors feed her too.

I'm just gonna miss her while were gone; thats all. I never knew a dog could be so spoiled!

Too bad you are not a Universal fan. The Leows hotels allow pets. We have a medium yellow lab that we left at a private kennel and missed her terribly, especially when we saw other large breed dogs in the lobby of the Royal Pacific Resort.

I agree. I love my oh-so-spoiled fur babies but would not want to take them out of their home just so I could see them during "spot visits" when I am not in the parks. I have a neighbor come over once or twice a day to feed them, play with them and be their "nanny" so I know they are in safe keeping.

One of my joys is shopping for my babies while at WDW. That way they will get to share in the fun when I get home.

I know you love your babies, too, but it's only for a few days.

1) Disney does not have pet-friendly resorts.
2) There are simply too many people with allergies.
3) Shedding pets or not, they ALL leave dander.
4) This can and does set off people with extreme allergies.
5) It is best for all to just keep the dog in the WDW kennels.

My Pommie is spoiled. That makes me a Pommie Mommie!!

I agree with Disneyaggie....

You know, you may miss your little baby, but if you have somebody who can come over and watch her and feed her, that might be best for her. She would probably be more comfy staying in her own home than going to a strange place. At least at home she is in her comfort zone. Image what she may think while you are off playing, wondering if you will be coming back to get her why mom left her all by herself in this weird-smelling room.

Also, you could kill 2 birds with one stone. I recall you being a bit nervous about people stealing from you while you were gone. If you had somebody come over, they could watch your baby and your house at the same time. :)

As others have mentioned, Disney resorts are not pet friendly. But I do understand what you mean. We have five cats. We leave them at home and have a cat sitter come in every day. Just about every hour on vacation my husband says "I hope my babies are okay".

We've traveled with dogs before when we've moved and had to find a house and stuff. It's very difficult to do. I know the OP said the dog would be in a kennel but I would think that the majority of people wouldn't follow the rule of not leaving a dog in the room during the day. I moved my cat (and a cat in a car isn't a great experience) and as much as I took precautions, he still dumped some litter in the room.

by the blood---WHAT A CUTE POM!

I have 2!!! They are a bit bigger and they are my BOYS!

I have taken my 2 poms to the TTC Kennels many many trips and the kennel is really top notch in my opinion. But I have been leaving them at home the past 2 trips and altough I do miss them so much, they are in their own backyard during the day weather permitting, and in their, (WELL, MINE) bed at night time. I ask a family member to go check on them.

But, if you really wanna take your babies to the kennel, the ones(the only one I have used is the TTC kennel) at WDW are great, you can go as much as you want to visit, you can get a BIG crate if its not too full, and if you have to go after it closes, WDW Security will gladly let you in to check on them. :goodvibes

But if you do kennel them, you have to have a certain Florida shot for them to be boarded, along with the usual kennel cough and rabies! Good luck! :yay:

My Pug is SO spoiled. I can't even imagine leaving him in a kennel. (To me that would be the same as dropping off my daughter with strangers for the week.)

We will be leaving Silk (2 1/2 yr old Pug) with his Grandparents for the 9 days we are gone. I know he will have a great time (they have a farm) & will probably gain a pound while we are gone (they just can't understand that he is a Little dog).

Find some place at home where your fur-baby can be pampered while you are gone. The idea of leaving our beloved pet in a wire cage while we are having a good time is just not acceptable.

Thank you! His name is Aslan.

WOW - I cannot believe you have Pommies bigger than him...he is almost 14 lbs, which is double the size of a full-bred. My guess is that he has some Spitz in him.

We board every year at FW kennels. As far as I know, there is no "certain Florida shot." Outside of the normally required vaccinations, they require Bordatella vaccine which is the kennel cough vaccine.

One of our best vacations was when we took our 14 year old Norwich Terrier (Hopkins) to Walt Disney World. We stayed in a rental house in a great community that allowed pets. We took him to the park kennels everyday. They were all great. Nice and clean and very modern. We would visit him every 2-3 hours for potty breaks, walks and food. We don't have any kids, so he is our "baby". We took lots of pictures. Outside of the Animal Kingdom, while on one of our breaks, Jane from Tazan was there, Turk and Timon. The characters just loved him! They treated him so special and it made my day that he could see the them.

I think you should take your dog to Disney World. It does limit your touring and you constantly have to visit, but I thought it pure joy. One of our best trips! If you want a hotel type experience, stay at Universal, but visit Disney. Or try the house thing that takes pets.

Just a thought, but we just loved it and he enjoyed it, too. He liked looking at the Disney-MGM tram depart near the kennels. He had fun!

Tina :)
PS: We almost had to put him to sleep a month ago, but we went to the University of Pennsylvania Vet Hospital where they took out his galbladder laproscopically. He was the second in the nation to have that operation that way. Very cutting edge. He's back to normal and we want to plan another trip. We'll do the house thing again. He loved the new house to explore and the outside of the parks. When we would get him from the kennels, most of the time he was sleeping. Great pictures with him! He loves new things and people. He loves going places, cars and walks.

How about the Loews Hotels in Universal, as they are "dog friendly?"

You should really look into Loews Hotels on Universal Studios property. You can leave your dog in your room if you wish. Dogs and cats receive a gift a bowls and treats when you arrive. We always stay at the Portofino or at the Hard Rock and bring our Eskie Dante. He loves it. The staff really loves dogs and most people there are animal lovers. You should give it a try - I guarantee you will love it. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. :cheer2:

I've taken my two dogs (a boxer and border collie mix) to the AK kennels, the Epcot kennels and the MGM kennels on different various trips over the years. My parents live in FL and when we go over to WDW for the day we will put them in the kennel since we spend the whole day and night and they wouldn't be able to hold it that long at my parent's house.

I like the kennels. The people are nice and the dogs are well taken care of, BUT I would never want to leave them for more than a day. They are locked up in a crate all day. It is not an indoor/outdoor run. It is a large crate inside a building with crate after crate lined up. On our Thanksgiving trip this year, the dogs had to spend two days in the kennels and I could just tell that they were miserable by the second day. My dogs are used to being outside whenever they want on two acres to play in. Cooped up in a crate all day with just a few visits from us was not a good time for them. Maybe smaller dogs or dogs that are mostly indoors would do better?:confused3

Over Christmas we took them to our local kennel. They were SO much happier. It is more like a doggie day care there. They have indoor/outdoor runs. They have play areas outside. There is just more room for them to do what they are used to doing. So, for short trips I'll consider the kennels, but for longer trips- I just wouldn't recommend it for larger dogs who are used to being outside a good bit.

OH!!! Aslan looks smaller in the pic! Let me clarify then...my Taz is about 15 lbs and Max is about 9 lbs....there is a tea cup, tiny and standard, my Taz is a standard Pom. Yours is too but without the spitz...he is totally POM! :goodvibes
