Dog nose bleed?

I was wondering if anyone has gone thru this? We rescue a hunting dog 2 years ago (the vet things he is about 6) he had a nose bleed last year. I call the vet and he just told me to call him if it happens again. It happen again a few days after that, we took him in they did blood test everything came back normal. The vet from there said that we should just let it be until it happen again. Yesterday it happen again. I call the vet this morning our vet is out of town until Monday so we will be taking him in then.

I don't know if you were with the dog to see when the nosebleed started, but my dog occasionally will sneeze so violently he bangs his muzzle on the floor and gives himself a bloody nose!

Maybe this has happened to your dog?

It is not the case. The first time he was laying on the couch over my white sweater and that is how I notice because it got in my sweater but i notice he licks it when it happens and his now is black so it is hard to see. Second time he was laying in the couch and I notice he was licking his nose a lot I took paper towel and that is how I found out. Yesterday it was on his food bowl that is white.

You said that his bloodwork came back normal? I am just asking what they tested for because my border collie was just diagnosed with Ehrlichiosis* on Saturday (tick fever or tick disease).

Coincidentally bleeding is one of the symptoms, which include nosebleeds.

Our bichon got a nose bleed that wouldn't quit one day while at the groomers. A couple of weeks before a schnauzer has "attached" her (I picked her up in time so no injuries) anyways, I guess there were two shnauzers getting groomed at the same time as our Jazmine and it made her nervous. We picked her up and brought her back for grooming the next day and everything has been fine.

Wiith our dog it was nerves, I hope that is all it is with your baby.

Our Irish setter who is now 6 developed a nose bleed 3 summers ago. His wouldn't stop so we took him to the emergency vet clinic. He had to be transfused and we moved him to our vet the following morning. The initally thought he might have a nasal/sinus tumor which they said is a common cause. The scope came back negative but his blood work was still messed up and he was very weak.

I came on here and one wonderful person who is a vet pm'd me and gave me the clue about the tick borne disease. I called my vet the following morning and discussed the fact he had to stop the Frontline due to reactions and the other meds didn't cover ticks. We had taken him down to central Ohio a couple weeks prior to the nosebleed to visit family. Our vet didn't think of it as he forgot the medication change and didn't know we had left our general area where we haven't had difficulty with tick borne diseases.

We put him on two weeks of antibiotics and rest and he has been fine since. Thank goodness. I love this place and all those who go out of their way to share their knowledge.

Fungal infection

Bleeding issue (tick borne issue, immune mediated platelet destruction etc.)

Do you see any other places where there is bruising or bleeding? Spots on the gum, belly, whites of the eyes? Is your dog feeling fine otherwise?

The long history of 6 months ago, the recently does not fit any of the above pictues, so I am having trouble putting it together.

I hope you and your veterinarian find an answer Monday.

That is great to hear!

Our vet thinks he caught it early. Our dog has to be on antibiotics for a month.

Thanks for all the responses. When they did his blood work they did check for all the tick diseases as that was one of the things we thought it was the problem. I don't remember now all the test that were done with his blood but I know they had to be send out to 3 different labs to have all the answers he wanted.

Definitely ask that your dog be tested for ehrlichiosis. If he's tested negative in the past, ask that another test be done, because false negatives happen. If this is ehrlichiosis, your dogs needs to be on Doxycycline immediately as this is a very serious disease. Good luck to you.

Allergies or respiratory infection? Our cat had a nosebleed and both of them were sneezing. The vet gave them a strong antibiotic and said they had seasonal allergies that set up respiratory infection.

The blood test run were likely a platelet count too. Sounds like things that cause bleeding all came out normal. I agree next step is to look up that side of his nose and get a biopsy or culture or swab or whatever is warrented with whatever is seen.

I do not have rhinoscopy available, so feel like I am doing caveman medicine if I do not refer to a specialist, but have had some success with just an otoscope, open mouth xrays under anesthesia and dental xrays to view the area.

I hope your vet finds something that is a fixable problem a foreign body or a ball of aspergillosis up there. Here in CA, it is often a foxtail, a particularly evil type of weed seed that ends up in ears and up noses frequently.

Update We went to the vet and he wanted to do some more blood work to make sure it is ok to put him under and since the test were done close to a year ago he thought it will be good to have new test done. we are waiting for the last of the blood test results on Monday and we will schedule things from there.

I see that this was some time ago, but I am hoping someone can come forward with what eventually happened with their he dog and what was the treatment for 1.alergies 2. bleeding from nose. I live in a country that does not have full-service veterinarian any where close. The vet has given my dog two complete blood analysis and sedated him too, in order to have a look. All is normal. There is a wound that won't heal, because, we think, he sneezes regularly and violently. We think this just doesn't give it a chance to heal. What can I do?

DD got a one year old pup from the local shelter a few weeks ago.
He sneezed blood. We took him to emergency vet because it was after hours and they said he would need a scope to rule out allergies etc.
DD works at a vet clinic so she took to work and he had a respiratory infection and was given antibiotics.
He is all better now.


OP hope all goes well for your pup and gets better soon.
