Dog licking plate???

A dog licking a plate doesn't bother me at all. I do get a little grossed out by dog hair though for some reason. Vacuuming is a daily chore in this house just to keep on top of it. It does kind of float through the air at times and yes, can end up in your kitchen drawers.

I've also seen people allow their cats to walk all over their kitchen counters; kitchen table; drink out of cereal bowls; etc.. So I would say, yes - there are people who think it's okay..

It's a little skeevy and not something I would do, but to me it's not a big deal as I'm assuming hey send the plates through the dishwasher when they are done. To me it's no more gross than eating off of a fork or spoon that another person who may or may not have been sick has eaten off of. It all gets washed.

FWIW, I have two cats and yes, they do get on the counters, not sure how to prevent that. But I always wipe down the counters before preparing food and never set food directly on the counters. It's always on a clean plate or cutting board (which are kept in a cupboard before being used).

My DH lets the dogs lick the plates and I yell at him, but they go in the dishwasher so it's not a big deal.

I have 3 cats and there is one that I can't keep off the counters so I have given up trying. Plus it's their escape from the puppy. I never put food on my counters without cleaning them first.

Thankfully her coloring matches the kitchen....;)

The only problem I have with it is I'm trying to teach my dogs to behave while the humans are eating. They're all a bunch of little beggars...and they need some serious manners (but they're also so darn cute!).

Anyway, I don't let them lick our plates because I want them to learn their food is in their bowls not ours!;)

Oh my MichelleVW! She is BEAUTIFUL!!!

My dog licks our plates. Hey, she's cleaner than a lot of people I've seen :lmao:

Everything goes through the dishwasher, so we don't get her germs...and she doesn't get ours :rotfl2:

I also share my food with her. If I'm eating a slice of cheese, I take a piece, then she gets a piece, etc.

And if she wants a lick of my popsicle, I will gladly share with her. After all, she'd share with me :)

I don't have a dog now but when I was growing up we always put our plates down for the dog when we were done eating. The dishes got washed afterwards. No big deal.

I have a cat now. He doesn't eat from my plate but we do feed him at the table. We cut up a few bites of meat when we are having something he likes (chicken, turkey) and put it on a bread plate and put it on the floor near the table. He isn't allowed up on the dining room table but he has been known to lick up some of the milk in DH's cereal bowl when he eats at the kitchen counter.

I don't have a problem with it. The dishes go into the dishwasher, the water is heated to 160 degrees. There's nothing in a dog's mouth that is going to survive 160 degrees. We have an acquaintance that we have recently found out is cheating on his wife with multiple women and has over the years. He's been at my house for dinner a few times and I let him eat off my plates. A dog's got nothing worse than he probably has! ;)

I'd bet serious cash your dog's mouth is cleaner than his :rotfl2:

My dog does get leftovers, but I dump them into her bowl. She doesn't use our dishes. My DH is grossed out by it. But he will eat off of his parents dishes, and their dogs do lick plates. They even lick pans that have been used for cooking. Now that I think about it, its kinda strange because my MIL is a neat freak. I would think she would be grossed out by it. Of course, they also find it ok to leave the lid up on the toilet all the time. I find that gross. Little droplets of toilet water fly into the air everytime you flush!!! If you put the lid down before you flush, it minimizes it. Dishes get washed everytime they are used, but the bathroom is only cleaned once a week.

There is absolute evidence that this is a myth. Dogs lick their butts, eat garbage, and chew on dead things in the yard, not to mention some have been known to eat poop. They are not clean.

Uh...:scared:I knew there was a reason I don't eat food that people bring to work.

On a gross out scale, I'd say letting pets eat off the dishes is about a 9. My two cats have their own dishes, thank you, and those said dishes get washed out in the laundry room sink, NOT my dishwasher. I'm not a clean freak by any stretch of the imagination, but I know what my cats lick on a daily basis, and that says enough for me!!!

We'll have to be in the minority together on this thread. I adore my 18 y.o. cat, but she has her own dishes. She eats several small meals a day and I usually just put those on paper plates. The forest will just have to lose a few trees. Her dry food and water bowls are hers and hers alone, never to mix with ours. She does not eat off our plates and no pet I've ever had has done so. That's nasty. Dishwasher or not, the thought of eating from the same plate as a dog or a cat makes me want to hurl. :scared:

It's interesting that the cat people are the most grossed out by it. Don't your cats walk through their own toilets several times a day, then run around on your furniture and bedding? And clean their own bottoms and then clean their own fur (which presumably you pet while they're sitting in your lap?)

So do none of you ever put raw meat on any of your plates?

When I'm grilling, I often put the meat on a plate to take it out to the grill. Obviously it gets washed before it's used to serve food on, so what's the difference between that and letting a dog lick a plate? I don't really care what's been on a plate, as long as it's been washed before I eat off it.

I just want to say that this is a really good point. There might be all kinds of nastiness that has touched our plates at some point...this is why we WASH them. If washing dishes does not sufficiently remove germs, then I'm just not going to bother anymore.

A friend has the cat's litter box smack dab in the center of the kitchen. It's not covered, and it's always full of poop.

She gets mad at me if I put a plate on the floor for the dog to eat from, and I'm like, :confused3 you've already got poop on the floor, how is it not ok to feed the dog there?

She also will take the cat's dish from the floor and put it on the kitchen counter, then prepare dinner on the same counter, with the cat food sitting next to it.

She's concerned with what's "gross", I'm concerned with cross contamination.

A dish that is contaminated with germs, whether from a dog, a piece of raw chicken, or a child with foot and mouth disease, that goes into the dishwasher, is disinfected.

Cat food on the counter, and cats on the counter, not so much.

I love my dogs dearly but they eat from their own bowls, not my plates. I'm not a germaphobe; I just don't like sharing.
