Dog licking plate???

I guess I'll be in the minority here, I think it's gross and it skeeves me out. I am not an animal person and I'm a germaphobe though so I'm sure that is why. I do not wish to have any animal's nasty tongue on a dish I may use, ever. Sorry.

FWIW we did have 3 cats growing up that I loved so I'm not an animal "hater". I just got very turned off when seeing them lick the most disgusting things, they'd throw up and eat it, they'd eat their poop from the litter box, they'd lick their butts, come on now...no way is their mouth clean.

why not just scrape the leftovers onto a paper plate that you can throw away after they're done licking/eating off it?

Because part of the point of putting the plate down for the dog to lick is to eliminate scraping the plates for washing. Whoever was doing dishes at the house I grew up in hated it when we had something the dog didn't like.

I don't do this...my dogs have their own plates....but, I do wash my dog's plates in our dishwasher with our other dishes. Some people would probably be grossed out by that.

Beautiful kitty! :thumbsup2

And you'll notice I didn't give my opinion - just answered the question..:upsidedow

Thanks...I really hate her being on the counters but she's usually not on the one where the food goes, and it was such a big battle that I just finally gave up. She is very persistent.

There are things that people do that bother me far more than a pet licking a plate that's about to go in the dishwasher.

The dog bowl gets washed in the dishwasher with the rest of the stuff. Some stuff I've had to throw in there is more disgusting than that. You know that hidden cup behind the bed with just a little bit of soda around the bottom to get disgusting...
Any case, the whole point of the dog licking the plate is so you don't have to scrap off nasty food, and it comes cleaner in the dishwasher. Mines awful at leaving food on pots and bowls.
I'm far from a germaphob... and yes occasionally i will pick a strand of fur or two out of my food. It's hard, her fur is sooo long, and it gets into everything possible. But I've never found her fur to be stuck in the cupboards.

Just a question...do those of you who think pets should not lick dishes let your pets lick you? I'm always getting puppy and kitty kisses. It doesn't bother me a bit.

Sorry for me it is yucky. Our dog has his own bowl. I totally understand that the dishwasher will get all the doggy germs off but for me it doesn't matter.

I love all animals.

But, if I ever was at someone's house and I saw that they let their pets lick their plates, using a dishwasher at 170 degrees or not, I would NEVER eat at their house again.

Yes, it just creeps me out. And yes, I would tell them as such.

I do allow pets to lick me on hands and such petting them, but not my face. I do wash before each meal.

Maybe I'm freaky but I REALLY don't care. It just totally grosses me out.

I recently read a dog trainer's advice about giving dogs "people" food, for anyone who wants justification for this habit. ;)

The trainer said that giving dogs the remains of your dinner after you've eaten is actually very healthy for your relationship with your dog. In dog and wolf packs, the alphas eat first, and then the other pack members get a turn. So by eating your food and then sharing with the dog, you're emphasizing to the dog that you are the alpha and that you're a good alpha who knows how to share, which engenders more love and loyalty from your pet.

This explanation may well be full of it, I don't know, but it certainly makes sense to me AND I can now use it any time someone tries to tell me I shouldn't feed my dogs table scraps or let them beg politely for me to share my snack with them.

I let mine, i also let them drink out of my glass if need be. I share food off my fork too. I do not however eat half chewed food that they had in their mouth and then pull out with their dirty little hands and reach up to your mouth expecting you to eat it....oh wait thats kids. :confused3
I see a ton of parents doing that , even after watching the kid shoving their hand down their diaper.

To each his own.

I let my dog lick the plates. He licks my face every day, so since my face is still ok, I believe the plates will survive, too!

LOL!!:laughing::rotfl::laughing:

It's interesting that the cat people are the most grossed out by it. Don't your cats walk through their own toilets several times a day, then run around on your furniture and bedding? And clean their own bottoms and then clean their own fur (which presumably you pet while they're sitting in your lap?)

Yep. Which is why I wash their feet. I'm more of a dog person, and my last dog was 13 and she never ate off my plate. Not sure if this was covered before, but their mouths aren't cleaner than a persons, it's a myth. It came about because they lick their wounds, which seem to heal faster. It's because they are removing the dead tissue.

Cats AND dogs lick themselves every which way till Tuesday, and no way is that tongue coming near my face or my plates.:scared1:

I was shocked the first time I saw my BIL do that. Ewwwww, he'll also finish chewing their gum

I find the practice of letting animals lick human plates to be unsanitary and distasteful. You know what else animals lick is all I can say.

You can send the same message just by feeding them their dog food after you eat. It is not about what you are eating but when they are eating.

My dd will sometimes let the dog lick the steak plate if it has alot of blood on it. There is my confession.;)

I would never ever let my dog lick the plates
while I had company over:lmao:

My animals are my babies BUT they don't get on the counters, at least not when I'm home, and they don't lick the dishes either. Auggie does occasionally lick a fork BUT that is because it is HER fork. We use that fork exclusively for her food to mix her wet and dry food together. If a lot of wet food is stuck to it I will let her lick it clean since we never use it.
