Why did you have to put your dog down? I'm sorry to hear that, but it doesn't make sense...? :confused3

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused here. Please update and advise why you had to put your dog down.

OH my gosh! I am so sorry! Please elaborate when you can.

Wow...color me confused. What happened between 9:45am and 2:20pm???

So, your dogs were in your yard, fenced in. Her dog came over and "teased" your dogs till one of them was able to get at her dog and bite it. The neighbor got bit by her own dog when she was trying to break up the fight, and your dog got put down??? I don't understand. I would understand there being some repercussions for your dogs not having proper shots, but why would your dog get put down????

You guys have all been so nice to help and provide info as Huckster is clearly and understandably upset. Unless you have been thru something like this - and I think it is a rare occurance - it is hard to know what they will do, especially if someone is pushing for law enforcement to put down a dog.

When I was in 4th grade, we lived in Illinios. We had a dog that had some German Shephard in him. We had had him since he was a pup and he had never once been aggressive with us kids (I had a younger sister, also). One day I was out in our tiny front yard with him and he took off down the street, almost a block away, and attacked a boy with a toy poodle. I ran down the street after him and brought him home. I was just a kid so I did not think to restrain the dog and our yard was not fenced. He layed down for a couple of minutes and then the darn thing took off down the street again and attacked this boy and his dog again! I went and got him again and restrained him in the back yard. I did not know this boy and had never seen him or his dog before!!

When my Dad got home, the police arrived. The family was pressing charges against my Dad (as the owner) and were threatening to sue us. They took my Dad away in handcuffs - he spent the night in jail. It was especially humiliating for my Dad as he rode with the police at night sometimes and he was getting a degree in religion at the time. The dog and the boy needed stitches and the parents were just livid, I understood.

The next day, after my Dad was released from jail, animal control came and got the dog and watched him for 24 hours and then put him down. The animal control officers reported to the police that they could not understand why the dog had attacked the boy as he was one of the mildest dogs they had ever seen.

When the police did their investigation, as the parents were telling my parents they were going to sue them for everything they owned - and my poor parents owned absolutely nothing - it was found that the boy had a paper route and apparently teased our dog when he would come by our house and find him in the back yard. We had not been aware of this. It was the first time the dog had been out of the back yard when he spotted the boy so he took off after him. The police talked the other parents out of suing us because they felt that the boy was partly to blame or at fault. My parents made payments for months toward the medical bills and we didn't own a dog again until I was in high school!

I guess it is universal that a dog has to be under your control and have shots and licensed. If your animal attacks someone, they will keep a watch on it for symptoms of disease. I am not clear if they automatically put a dog down after an attack or if they do it because one of the parties insists upon it.

I am so sorry you will have to lose your dog because of this. It just does not seem right....even if the shots had lapsed, they were in your yard and under control! I am so sorry you are having to go thru this....I know your kids will be upset and that will be the hardest part! :grouphug:

Huck??? Why did you have to put your dog down?

I'm so sorry.

I am so sorry

if her dog bit her.....would not her dog have to be put down....this makes no sense :(

I am so very sorry you had to lose your dog to thiers being loose :(

In the case of a dog running after someone and attacking them, I could see how it might have to be put down. Although in your dog's case, mtbluejeans, the fact that the dog had been teased etc. should have been taken into consideration more than it was.

But in hucksters situation, it sounds like her dogs were under control in a fenced in yard with another dog who was actually loose. So why did the fenced in dog get put down, and not the loose dog??

Certainly not trying to blame huckster, or minimize her anguish, but I just really don't understand.

I knwo that a dog is considered an "attractive nuisance" much like a swimming pool, and the owner bears the brunt of responsibility should something happen, but it has been my experience that most dogs who bite have been provoked in some way, and are protecting themselves the only way they know how.

Please let's not now post every "unprovoked dog bite" story we all know...I am aware that they do happen. It is just rare for most household pet dogs to attak unless they are provoked.

I'm just seeing if there is an update. I don't understand this. From what I've read the dog would not have to be put down. And if it did, they would wait a few days to make sure it did not have rabies. I had a dog go through a window screen to bite the paper boy one day (the second time he had bitten) and I put him to sleep that day--well my nosy neighbor called the dog warden and I was brought up on charges--they dismissed the one about not having insurance for the dog, since I did (the girl who sold it to me was then fired for issuing the policy knowing he had bitten), and also about having the dog outside without a leash (since he went through the window) but I got the maximum fine for not waiting for a 10 day period to make sure the dog had rabies or at least having the head sent to the state capitol for testing. It's still on my record because I don't feel like paying $50 to expunge a 17 year old misdemeanor.

Sorry about your dog being put down, Huck.

Just an fyi to everyone--NEVER, EVER try to break up a dog fight. You will surely get bitten.

Rather, turn a water hose on the fighting dogs and have someone pull one away. This is what we were taught in obedience class.

Waiting for an update....
This whole thing makes no sense to me.
When a dog bites a person it has to be quarantined for 10 days, then has to have a vet check.
If her dog bit the neighbor(which was not the case) it could not be put down for at least 10 days.
Since it was the neighbors own dog, why was Hucks dog put down?
Was there something else going on?

facts there dog was on our land
. provked our dog till it got loose , she stated her dog bit her. so i didnt try to pull them apart. my dog let go theres ran home mine followed for a minute came home
i am at flaut no tags or shot
but my dog was in my yard confiend theres was running loose for quite some time in thier yard? what is going to happen they will call cops i think she wnt to hosp. any ideas .. why me?

It sounds like huckster's dog did get loose. I am not sure, but huckster's dog may have dug under the fence. Depending on the type of dog, and the law, her dog could easily be the viewed as the aggressor by the county.

That makes no sense.

The police would not order this this quickly. Why in gods name would you not fight that?? Why would you just kill your beloved pet???

Sorry, if my dog nipped someone, I'd probably get myself tossed in jail before I'd let the authorities order him put down. Because I know my dog and my dog would not bite someone unless he was seriously provoked.

Sorry, I'm not going to pixie dust you. There was no reason I could discern from your post to have the dog put down. Even dogs who maul kids and probably SHOULD be put down are not ordered put down until the second offense usually.

Maybe she is expressing fear that the neighbor will fight to have the family pet put down.....we'll wait and see. I certainly hope they do not :guilty: What a terrible situation! I hope she really pushes that the neighbor's dog was loose and instigated this whole thing!
