Does your college alma mater normally qualify for March Madness?

No, I went to Penn State. We typically stink at basketball. The ladies team did get to Final Four a couple of years after I graduated but they would have had to beat UConn and Tennessee to win it . Didn’t happen

I went to Cornell, so even if there were to get the automatic bid (do the Ivies still get an automatic bid?), it's not like they'd go past the first game, hahaha. DH went to Syracuse. I'm not sure how they are doing, but we've seen some pretty amazing basketball since 1985, including a National Championship! GO ORANGE GO!!!
Yes, pretty sure Ivies still get an automatic (not that it helps…..) and Big Red was last in a good position during the teens. Which school did you go to? Hotelie on this end.

The men usually come close but not quite, and usually lose in the first round if they do make it.

The women's program, however, makes the tournament pretty consistently, and have made the Final Four several times, though never won the title.

Every certified conference gets an auto bid. I'm pretty sure the Ivy League gets one. If there's a conference tournament, the auto bid goes to the winner. Otherwise it goes to the conference regular season champion.
The Ivy League always did get an automatic bid but I wasn't sure if the rules had changed or not in recent years (i.e., play-in games and such)

I was in the Ag school, majored in Food Science. I have never worked in food science, but a protein is a protein, and DNA is DNA, regardless of the source, so I had a pretty interesting research lab career for about 25 years!

I had to look it up, I was never big into basketball. They were reliably in the tournament in the late 80s/early 90s, but not so much since then.

Maybe once or twice every ten years or so, usually as a 15 or 16 seed, and only from getting an auto-bid for winning the conference tourney.

Basketball Capital of the World!!!

Men - 34 tournament appearances 5 Final Fours and 4 National Championships
Women - 32 straight tournament appearances. 22 Final Fours including 14 in a row and a record 11 National Championships

They would have made it during the Covid cancellation year, they have made it last year and the year before and they should make it this year as well.

Go Heels (so proud of Coach Davis, who was a player when I was in school) and I have a Dookie for a brother, too! 😬

LOL. Is the Division III playoffs considered "March Madness"? My alma mater is Division III, Landmark Conference. In fact, my high school alma mater student enrollment was larger than my college alma mater student enrollment.

Nope. UCSD is more of the nerd school than focused on sports. At the time I was there, the only D1 sport we had was water polo. I think there was a recent move to make all of the sports on campus D1 but I don't know if it actually went through.

Not my alma mater (that is Arizona State - which goes occasionally), but I attended Michigan State my freshman and sophomore years. They are routinely a part of March Madness.

GO GREEN!
