Does the Poly Need a FACELIFT?

Exactly! Management at the Poly doesn't seem to care anymore...I read there is a new ( last yr or the yr before) manager who is also responsible for the GF.

I remember thinking maybe they are feeling overwhelmed with supplying the magic guests expect - but for the most part, the only magic expected at the Poly is excellent guest service in every area - management should be able to provide that.

I don't think it needs a facelift, but they do need more than band-aid solutions to recurring problems.

They need to address the refidgerator issue. I'm guessing all of us who have had fridge problems were told to leave the cabinet doors open so the fridge could cool off. IMO, they need to come up with a permanent solution to their bad design and not put it on the consumer.

Common plumbing problems need to be addressed. Housekeeping and maintenance need to step up. Management that is responsive to consumer complaints needs to be put in place.

Exactly. These are issues that simply should not be on-going at a Deluxe Resort. They shouldn't be at ANY resort for that matter, and certainly not one in the Poly's price range. It's unacceptable.

I think so. The look of the Poly makes me think of the Brady Bunch episode where they went to Hawaii and Greg found the voodoo tiki.

I can understand why people are upset by the prices, but you are not just paying for the room in that price. You are paying for the location - you are on the monorail line. You are paying for the food - Ohana's & Kona & The Spirit of Aloha. You are also paying for the view - from the Poly you can see Cinderella's Castle. Disney needs a way to pay for the restaurants etc, so they put up the prices to meet that demand.

I love the theming of the resort, but that is just me. I am staying there in 6 days so I will see what I think about it this trip. While some do not like the theme of the resort, I think resort is designed beautifully to fit the theme.

I love that episdoe AND love the Poly....no face lift...it's classic Disney.

Does it need a "facelift" as in "brightening things up a bit," etc... Absolutely not. It is what it is. Anyone who says it reminds them of "The Brady Bunch," is sort of missing the point.... that's what old Polynesia looked like. In fact, a lot of the Polynesian reminds me of the Ritz Carlton in Maui (dark wooden staircases and all). I personally don't want to see it done over to look like a modern, generic, bright Hawaii hotel. Tikiman (a Polynesian Resort maniac) used to address all this on his pages, but I can't find the exact link any more. His page is: www.tikimanpages.com

Does it need "repair?" Absolutely. Cracked windows, leaking ceilings, refrigerator problems etc... are all completely unacceptable for a Deluxe resort. Those sorts of things should be taken care of immediately (in other words, if a window in Ohana cracks, it should be replaced overnight).

Management problems? Never had any. My trips have, fortunately, been all but perfect. But I see complains about every resort at Disney. The problems I experienced at Grand Floridian far exceed anything I've seen at Polynesian. My thought is that no Disney resort is perfect, and someone is ALWAYS going to find something wrong somewhere.

Polynesian is my favorite, and I welcome the complaints. That makes it easier for me to get a room!

We stayed at Poly last year and while we really enjoyed our stay I do think the rooms were kinda dark and out dated. I love the overall feel, the grounds, the pools, the outside of the buildings, even the lobby in the main building but the rooms were a bit dark and the furniture (and carpet) was totally 70's.

I think some of the widely different opinions are due to the fact that I believe different buildings have been updated at different times. We just stayed in Tokelau and the room was gorgeous. Yes, it has a lots of dark wood, that is part of the charm and theming. As far as not having enough light to read, there were two lights on each bed, attatched to either side. They were on dimmers, so you could turn it way up or down, depending on what you needed. There was a huge flat screen TV and two beautiful light colored chairs with ottomans. The last word that would come to mind is "dated"

I know ! We were *shocked* to find Vincent Price tied to two totem poles behind the volcano pool !

Seriously, it's hard for me to judge the Poly objectively because I have such serious nostalgia for the place. I've been staying there since I was 4 years old.

But, it's clear there are several things that need to be addressed in upkeep and maintenance that go ignored for long, long periods of time.

Broken windows, shower heads covered in lime and calcium, elevators in the GCH that should have been replaced decades ago.

When Walt was alive, he'd turn inside out if he saw chewing gum on the ground. Can you imagine what he'd say about rainwater leaking into 5 gallon buckets scattered across the GCH ?

Yes! I agree with both of you. I was going to post that the Poly needs an attitude facelift. If there's a bad or I don't give a darn attitude in management, most of the rest of the staff will mirror that.

Hey All!

Not sure why a few people get defensive here. Look I'm a Poly lover, went in September 08, and was recommended a room by some nice person on the Poly forum. It was a patio pool view which is GV. Absolutely very nice. THe landscaping around the resort as I said earlier is gorgeous and lush, the pool is nice and beach and lake are great, and the view is superb! But I do think (in my opinion) the rooms need to be a bit lighter maybe change the color of the bedspreads to somethng lighter with still keeping in the Polynesian theme. I think this will boost the Poly to more of a DELUXE hote. I've been to the Hilton and Marriott and they do have an awesome polynesian theme in their rooms. It makes it more luxious and more fresh looking in my opinion.


One poster pointed out that guests aren't paying for the room, rather they are paying for the onsite monorail and various restaurants. Well, I would have to disagree, because the GF and CR are both on the monorail lines. I don't believe they have the same maintenance problems the Poly does. Hopefully things will be resolved soon.

I think most everyone LOVES the tropical theming hotel but I think the hotel hasn't changed since it's inception of 1971. I would like to see a FRESH, NEW and IMPROVED Poly.

Indeed. "Old and musty" DH calls that smell. He refuses to consider staying there. I think there is just too much water running around inside, when combined with our natural Florida humidity is just too much for the ventilation system to handle. Get rid of most of the interior water, and I am sure that smell will go away.

We've toured several times and just couldn't bring ourselves to stay there, we felt it was too dark and didn't like the feel of the resort, I don't know what it was, but we never felt any pull to stay there.... I feel it could use an update, I love the new look of CSR that was posted on page 1. Something fresh and bright would help a lot.
