Does terrorism threat affect your plans?

I was just wondering about this after listening to the news today (Homeland Security issued a new "alert"). Does anyone else make or change their plans based on terrorism threats? I don't think I would personally, but our family's planning is affected because my husband is a little paranoid (and maybe understandably so since he was on an airplane during the 9/11 attacks!) When I first started planning our trip he didn't want to go to Disney World, partly because he doesn't like the crowds and atmosphere there, and partly because he honestly thinks Disney is a very possible terrorism target. Even though we are just doing Universal, he still didn't want to fly to Orlando until after the November elections. I'm just not sure if my husband is only mildly alarmist or absolutely weird compared to other Orlando tourists. Any thoughts??

Lets see.....

leaving for Las Vegas on Saturday for 5 days
August we are going to USO for 5 days
November going to British Virgin Islands for a week then a hop over to WDW for 4 days
February 2005 going to Hawaii and Maui
July 2005 going to Alaska on cruise 10 days

I would never let this meaningless BS rule my life. Do you really thing the Gov't would say...don't fly to WDW, a plane will be hijacked and crashed into the castle - please stay home?? Get real - It is not specific, and I do question these "terror threats" anyway...sounds like a lot of busy work so the government looks like they are doing something to "protect" us.

In any terror situation around the globe was anyone ever warned off??

The answer is NO. The only thing that controls what we do is our checkbook!:hyper:

I am more afraid of driving on the Long Island Expressway, the creepy noise I hear in my attic sometimes and eating White Castle hamburgers.

The reality is, do not live in fear.

ITA (especially about the busy work part). We are travelling so much this summer I refuse to let that stuff get to me.

I don't let the threats bother me. We've heard of several and I intend to keep on living the way I want to.

My husband is afraid of flying but not b/c of threats or 9/11. We just always drive. It has never affected our plans. I understand why your hubby sees DW as a terrorist target. It would be a devastating attack to say the least. It would affect people from all over the world b/c of all the foreign tourists and b/c it is supposed to be a magical place. I would hate to see that happen.
But will it affect our plans?? Not in the least. I won't give it a second thought. My belief is if it is your time to go, then it is your time to go. It doesn't matter where you are, or what you are doing, it will happen. You just have to have faith that everything will turn out okay. I would still go on my trip. Your hubby can't let fear rule his life. Otherwise, he is letting the terrorists win.

We are traveling to Orlando the last week of August. To be honest, I feel safer there than here in NY. NY was a very scary place to be on 9/11. I was frightened for a while after that, worried about my daughter at school, my other kids and husband at work etc. Then there were the other things, the anthrax scare, etc. I finally realized, there is absolutely NOTHING we can do about it so why worry? Like the previous poster said, when it's your time, it's your time.

Not in the least but and I will just say go see Fahrenheit 9-11..... it tells alot about the "threats"

hahahaha the LIE hahahaha too funny now that is TERROR!

We have many travel plans this summer and I live and work in NYC ...as a member of the FDNY i lost dozens of friends on 9/11...I do not let the threat of terrorism alter my plans...if we do then the terrorists win.
As for that Moore movie ...its one mans "take" on 9/11....I do not agree with his ideas but that is for another board
terrorists ARE a threat but being scared of them gives them more power.

Just my two cents also! We cant live in fear of terrorists..if we do then we are doing what they want to. My wedding anniversary is Sept 11 (1999) and we celebrate it by taking a vacation every year. We were in LAS in 2001 and got stuck for an extra few days--it was a smal price to pay compared to some. BUT my point is, Sept 11 is a tragic day for all of us, but for those who have special things (anniv, bds) on those days, we have to go on and celebrate those also. The first anniversary of 9/11 we went to WDW and didnt think twice about it. We feel that if we stop what we would do normally because of "threats" then we are not living our lives the way we should...fear is what the terrorists want us to feel and DH and I refuse to feel that way. We fly when we go on vacation and wouldnt do it any other way. So, to answer your question "nope" we wont change our plans due to possible threats.

So, everyone go and enjoy your vacations! :wave2:

No way! Terrorism does not affect any of my plans. If it does, they win!

I so agree with AlexandNessa, if you cancel or change your plans due to a terrorist threat then they have won. If my time is up I would love to be with my family in the happiest place on earth, but I could so easily be knocked down by a car - infact that is probably more likely to happen. So no I won't change my plans, but I will however be more vigilant and still enjoy myself.

We went to MK the Saturday after 9/11 and there was only 500 people in the park at 11 am. Ghost town!

Thanks for all the replies, even if they do tend to prove my husband is a nut! (But I already knew that). I absolutely agree that we shouldn't let terrorists run our lives, and I'm glad to see that most people aren't letting that happen.

Even DH knows that he's not being logical when I remind him we're far more likely to be killed driving to the airport than in a terrorist attack. But the thing about irrational fear is that's it's so...irrational!

I also agree that the "warnings" are absolutely meaningless since if the govt really knew what was going to happen they'd stop it or ground the flight or close the park or whatever.

And we are going to go see Fahrenheit 9/11 this week, but not because I expect DH to leave the theater a more rational creature than he started as! :p

snoozn (who wishes that she were also going to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Virgin Islands, but will settle for Orlando!)

Hi

Terrorist will never rule my family....When 9/11 happened we had plans for a cruise a week and a half after the attack..knowing that there was another threat of planes being hijack on the Sat . we left.. Did not stop us..But we did have a scare on the flight ...there was a man that had a mideast look to him and it made the flight attendants very nervous..they had the pilot take alook from the cockpit and they started checking his I.D...While they ran a check on him...they used the excuse for our delay as that they were still fueling ...which they were not..they were doing an FBI check ..because we were on the side that they fuel up on...That was creepy but it won't stop me...We will be leaving and heading down to Orlando on Oct.27 for 3 nights at UO and then a 7 night cruise....Because I know first hand that the airlines do a pretty good job at checking the passengers once on the plane...and they have no problem delaying a flight to make sure all are safe...So go and have a great time.:scared: :worried:

If they did bomb Disneyland, i think the world (even the people who liked them) would stop supporting it. Remember there are a lot of Muslims who go to these theme Parks and Foreigners. What would they get out of it? I'm flying to Italy this summer and i'm terrified that they are going to attack Rome(because they support us in Iraq.) I mean look what happened in Spain. I'm also flying back home to britain as well. But there again there isn't a lot you can destroy in Britain with a plane. Its only flying i'm scared of.

I am half Italian so I have always wanted to go to Italy, but I am like you. I would be more afraid of going overseas than staying in the States. But I am sure you will be fine and I hope you enjoy your trip. You will have to let me know how it was when you get back. For now, my trip to Italy is just a fantasy. Have a good time! :wave2:

Not a major problem. We all have to carry extra weapons with us nowadays though. Kinda gets to be a drag sometimes. (Always checking the safeties before a ride!)

I don't let it affect my plans, although I'm starting to wonder about the orange alerts consistently declared a couple of days before I'm due in the US. Should I be taking this personally?:jester:

Ciao,
Mort.
