Does no one else celebrate with wedding anniversary getaways?

.

Now my son does occasional overnights with HIS grandma, and they both love it.

Ah, yes - the missing piece for many of us. A grandma evidently close by and willing to take care of your child.

A key component of adult only vacations. I was going to say the my DH and I don't love each other enough to take an alone vacation, but that would have been snarky.

Is it that you don't love each other enough or is it that you don't make your marriage a priority?;)

We will be celebrating 36 yrs this year and sometimes we have managed a weekend away but not enough. I wish that we could afford it but money has always been tight. We did manage to save up and go on a cruise for our 25th. That was great. We had hoped to go to Hawaii on our 30th and then our 35th but it will be a couple more years if at all that we will be able to afford anything. I had children and they were mine to look after and I have friends who will not leave their son for an hour. What I do know is that kids grow up and if you haven't had time with each other and kept "in touch" with each other you can be in trouble. For me..well we still have a "kid" at home and have actually acquired another one. We can't wait to have no one at home. That doesn't mean I don't really enjoy the 4 (almost 5) grandkids or my own kids I really wish we could afford to go out sometimes just the 2 of us.

The times that Grandma hasn't been feeling well or close by, we've used one of our sitters for the weekend. Or family friends.

Now a couple of anniversaries, DS has gone with us. And one, where we didn't have someone for overnight, we just did a 12 hour one-day excursion of wineries and shops and bookstores and were back at night.

Unlike many people, we don't have a lot of couple time. My husband is gone 12 or more hours a day, and I work a swing shift and a lot of weekends. So what time we have remaining -- mainly Saturday -- we spend together as a family typically during the week.

So that's why I particularly look forward to our yearly getaways where it's just the two of us. I can see that if you had a more traditional schedule and actually had evenings and weekends together, it would seem like less of a big deal.

Great point, and one too often couples -- particularly women -- don't want to acknowledge.

But of course there are ways to stay connected beyond weekend getaways. Good luck getting to Hawaii down the road. Your cruise on your 25th sounds lovely.

Not sure what we'll do yet for 25. But next year is Chicago -- we are already planning.
