Does MCO have the new Body Scanner that everyone is chatting about?

John Tyner is not the organizer of National Opt Out Day. That is Brian Sodergren.

I am glad I am not scheduled to fly anywhere on November 24.

Me too. I feel bad for the people that just want to get to see their loved ones that may miss their flights because of this. WHo knows...maybe it won't actually cause many delays. Depends on the number of people that opt out I guess. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Of course he's happy. so now we've got people running around claiming the TSA agents (who have absolutely no authority to change a blessed things) are rapist, molestors and every other things. Gearing up before they even get to the airport that they are already going to fight, so before the TSA agent can even open his/her mouth there is absolutely nothing they can say that is going to be good.

Yet, they are the ones being vilified and as you can see by the tone of post above anyone who could really care less, or anyone who has no problem with the scanners, well of course we are supporters of "big brother"

It reminds me of that scene in beauty and the beast, the one where Bell shows the townspeople a picture of the beast in the enchanted mirror and of course Gaston whips the townspeople into a mindless frenzy. I think he even tells them in one scene that the beast will steal their children to eat. I wouldn't be surprised if passsengers show up at the airports with pitchforks and burning fagots singing "kill the beast".

God nothing would make me happier than to kill the beast. "Absoulte power corrupts absolutely".

People like that seem to be willing to abuse others because they are unwilling to accept that they failed to put in place a government that would have naturally acceded to their own personal preferences in this specific case (putting aside the aspect that they probably would be just as self-centered in their complaining about the negative ramifications of society acceding to all such demands they'd make - some people just want everything, for free).
You don't think that there have been organized efforts to successfully push back against the TSA?
Go back and read the message you replied to. Your reply is non-sequitur.

Except the TSA agents are not the "Beast". they have no power to corrupt. :lmao: so getting mad and throwing pitchfolks at them is pretty much like pissing in the wind. In the end, you'll be the only one getting wet.

What I honestly don't understand is this demonization of TSA employees. They are just other human beings trying to eek out a living and support their family. They are friends and neighbors and sons and daughters and simply do not deserve the nasty comments and insinuations being shoveled their way. I fly ALL THE TIME and have only once found a rude TSA employee (Midway during the holidays). On the whole, everyone has been nice, kind, helpful and friendly. It helps, I guess, that I am always friendly to them and don't approach security with a chip on my shoulder. Also, I fly out of MSP mostly which is the land of Minnesota Nice.

Fly, don't fly, whatever makes sense for you. However, at this juncture, this is the security we have. We will never have Israeli style security as we are a convenience based culture and simply would never put up with the hardship Israeli security would require. Also, we would never pay for it. We chafe at paying for health care for our own citizens...certainly we will not pay to keep the elite few (remember, NOT EVERYONE can afford to fly and go on vacation) safe in the skies.

In the end, we are all very, very fortunate that the biggest thing to get upset about is backscatter xrays when we go on our expensive vacations. Some people have real problems and this, in my book, does not qualify.

Safe travels to everyone however you decide to go.

You are kidding? Correct? In today's paper there was a story of a 17 year old who killed two in Wisconsin. So, I guess we should demonize all 17 year olds because of this one. There was also a story about police brutality. So, let's do away with them as well. The abortion clinic bomber was a white, southern christian man, so clearly, all white, southern, christian men are bad. You see where this is going. No profession is immune from a few bad apples. That does not mean ALL are bad or whole strata of people deserve this treatment. Just ask the Catholic church......

I'm sorry with your experience with the TSA has not been a pleasant one. I also do not see the relevance of the article you posted since the TSA agent was not at work at the time.

Exactly. We could find similar articles where the criminal was a teacher or lawyer or bricklayer or whatever job the PP does.

Nor frankly, so I see a
"never-ending stream of TSA Bad Apples™ arrested for Isolated Instances™"
. Have there been some? Absolutely. There have also been Teacher Bad Apples™and Lawyer Bad Apples™ and (very likely) PP's job Bad Apples™.

I think it just makes people feel powerful to say things like:

God nothing would make me happier than to kill the beast. "Absoulte power corrupts absolutely".

Even though it really just makes them seem rather foolish since "beast" that they want to apparently kill (the TSA worker), has no power.

Ok...there are incidents of TSA agents doing bad stuff, I have to say I was anticipating seeing a story about a TSA agent abusing passengers ...the example given is a guy who did something rotten when he was off duty?

Awhile back there was this story about an FBI agent who shot his neighbor's chihuauhua, apparently just because he didn't like the dog... apparently that story could be used to show that FBI agents can be gun-happy animal haters.

I have a question...

If you opt out of the body scanners.... can you have your pat down done right there? or do you have to go to a different area.

And any experiences with a family of 5 opting for pat downs... is everyone split up? Will children be kept within eye contact?

Thanks

My DH and myself did not opt out of the scanner. However, my DH moved during the scanner so needed the pat down. They did it right there, at the end of the line, in the open. This was at BOS. Parents will remain in eye sight of children. What my family does thru security is my DH will go first, followed by the two children, then I will go. Much easier to keep an eye on the kids and our belongings this way.

That is an excellent approach and exactly what DW and I do with DS and DD when we fly out of IAD or BWI.

I'm also very glad that the head of the TSA announced yesterday that persons will NOT be permitted to opt out of the body scans due to religious beliefs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 20 people who prompted the Bush Administration to create the DHS and TSA following their attacks on Sept 11, 2001 were carrying out their acts in the name of their extreme religious views. So why would we give a pass based on what got us into this mess in the first place? :rolleyes1

In terms of public acceptance, it will be interesting to see if (a) opt-out has more than a few people participate and (b) what the public reaction is if it does.

On another (paywalled) Disney board I participate in, the following poll question was asked:

the full body "naked" scan 91% (41)
have your private parts felt up by a stranger 6% (3)
will no longer fly 2% (1)

The person who said they would no longer fly already doesn't, so it's not a change in behavior. Personally, I was a little surprised by the fact that even though people aren't happy about the new process, none of these people would give up flying to Disney for it.

On the same note, the sports radio station I listen to had the new screening and opt-out day as a topic of discussion a couple days ago. The overwhelming sentiment was: "Get over yourselves and go through the scanner, 'cause the world's not a safe place and this will help." Again, I found it surprising that the sentiment was so clearly one-sided based on the discussions we are seeing here on the Transportation board as well as among colleagues in the computer security space.

So, using these two anecdotes as data points, plus the minor-grumbling-but-no-real-anger I've seen in the airports over the last few weeks, it seems to me that (a) most people just don't care that much, and (b) if they do, they would rather have (the impression of) safety than worry about nudie scans, foreplay searches, or unreasonable search-and-seizure.

True, but the background check screening process failed to spot him. Do you think that his "craziness" may have showed up in his on the job interactions with passengers.

Actually, he said that the WBI scans were voluntary and that if a passenger did not agree to EITHER a WBI or an "up close and personal" body search that the passenger would not be permitted to fly.

I'm going to assume, based on the apparent reference to 9/11, that you mean Moslems when you reference religious objections. Just remember that the Pope, as well as a number of prominent Rabbis, have come out against the scanners.

Can you please tell me where you read the Pope's thoughts? To be honest I would rather take off my clothes in a private room than have someone touch me all over. Just my thought.

I saw on Fox news that airports can Opt out! I just read on the Drudge report that the airport in Stanford, FL may.

No. Not necessarily. A lot of people behave very differently in their out of work life. ;)

The poster was probably referring to Muslims as far as the religious objections. The TSA has now announced they will not accept religious objections. Why should I care what the Pope and Rabbis say about the scanner? Again, I am of the belief that I experience something with my own two eyes before I make a decision.
