Does DVC ever upgrade?

From time to time there's a thread on the DCL forum about getting a cabin upgrade. So it got me thinking: Do DVC resorts ever upgrade?

For example, book a studio, but discover at check-in that you're getting a 1Br? Or, book BWV standard view 2br and end up with a preferred view. All of this without using more points, of course.

I predict the answer will be a definite "no." But, what if there was a CRO or MS error down the line on someone else's reservation that works out to my benefit?

Could it/has it ever happened?? Just curious.

It does happen, but it's almost always for maintenance reasons. If you're booked into a studio and one of the studios needs to be taken out of circulation for maintenance purposes, you may get upgraded to a 1B.

The idea behind DVC is for the resort to be close to 100% occupancy year-round. So, in many cases, there just aren't unbooked rooms into which guests could be upgraded. Even then, members are expected to book the size of accommodation they want--not rely on the possibility for upgrades.

We were upgraded from a studio to a 1BR at BWV when paying cash, but never when using points.

It's very rare, but does happen.

The best example I ever saw was a DVC member on another forum who booked two one bedrooms at the Boardwalk for herself and another couple for three nights.

Upon arrival, they were given keys and on the way up in the elevator discovered both parties had the same room number. Confused and assuming a mistake, they got off the elevator on the assigned floor, rounded a corner and found the room number on a set of double doors.

Upon opening them, they realized they had been upgraded to a Grand Villa. :cloud9:

Rare...but my SIL/BIL were upgraded from a studio to a 1bdrm at BWV on points..Kills my SIL cause they had never stayed in a 1 bdrm now they don't want to go back...

As noted, it essentially never happens. Exceptions are when what you have reserved isn't available. Many people at BWV got upgraded from standard to preferred when they were doing the repairs, many were to a 1 BR from a studio. Some got a major upgrade when they arrived and BCV was totally full and they could not be accommodated. One got a OKW GV instead of a 2 BR and one got a BWI concierge but I don't recall what they had, maybe a 1 BR.

It happened to me once. I was upgraded from a standard view to a pref. view studio at BWV. The front desk CM offered it to me at check-in. I asked if that wouldn't leave some other person without a pref. view when they checked in. The CM said no, that they were actually short of standard view studios for that week. Hmmm, okay, whatever you say! :rotfl:

Rare, but I've heard of it happening. A renter of mine got upgraded from a studio to a 1bdrm. There was some kind of major mixup or problem at their regular Disney hotel (they were doing a split stay at a moderate resort, and the moderate resort knew they were switching over to BWV later), and it seems that that hotel had called the BWV front desk and somehow got them switched to a 1bdrm as a kind of compensation for their trouble. At least that's how it was relayed to me.

That whiny reporter got a 2BR for free.
