Does anyone use Dramamine?

I used to until I tried ginger pills. The ginger works like a charm and it is natural. :)
The dramamine worked for me, but made me sleepy. I don't have to worry about that with ginger either - another plus. :)

I'm planning to try this next trip just because the Dramamine does make me a little sleepy. How often throughout the day did you take the ginger pills to keep away the nausea?

Last year we took our 15 year old granddaughter with us on our trip. We didnt even get off the runway at the airport before she was sicker than you can only imagine. For 2 straight hours she used the air sick bags on the plane and we were afraid that she was going to be dehydrated so as soon as we got to POP we headed to the Disney primacare thing to have her checked out. They told us to get her Dramamine. It was a trip saver. She took it every day that we were there, she rode every ride-even TOT, RR, Everest and the plane trip home without another problem. YES it works great!:thumbsup2

I used it on our flights this week to and from Disney. I had used them on my last trip, too. I buy the non-drowsy formula because I don't want to be groggy all day during the first day of my trip. Worked just fine for me.

I always use something when traveling-dramamine, bonine (I'll get the generic next time--thanks for the tip!) I used the patches last year when I went on my first cruise. They worked okay-- I never got sick-- but I also felt a little stoned the whole time. It was kind of like when you have something blocking your ears and you don't realize it until they clear. After I got off the boat and stopped using the patch, I could feel my senses beginning to return. I'm grateful I wasn't sick during my trip but I wonder if I would have enjoyed the sites of the Greek Isles better if I hadn't been in an altered state. But I know from experience that I have to be proactive; once I'm sick, I'm done for the day.

What would you recommend for a small for her age 9 year old that cannot swallow pills?

Motion sickness can be as a result of over stimulation of the balance apparatus in the inner ear (labyrinthine) or excessive responce of the mid brain (vestibular nuclei)

Dramamine contains dimenhydrinate which is a histamine analogue which slowd down the response of the VN in the central nervous system.

The less drowsy formula contains meclozine which is the same ingrediant in Bonamine, Bonine and Antivert

Additional drowsiness will be cause if taking anti motion sickness medication along with anti allergy medication as these are also anti histamines. Especially products like Piriton or chlorpheniramine which may also posssibly have an effect on motion sickness owing to its chemical class, but there are no studies and it is not licenced or recommended

It goes without saying that mixing any treatments like these with alcohol will add additional sedating effects and should be avoided

edited to add, we use the dimenhydrinate version of Dramamine very occassionally and neither myself nor my son (18) experience sedation of which we are aware. Dramamine as dimenhydrinate is not available in the UK from pharmacies, we buy ours in the USA

The only thing I have found that works for me is a prescription patch that you put behind your ear. Sorry I cannot remember the exact name of it, but your doctor should know. As I said it is only available through a prescription. I will never go on another Disney trip without them. You put it behind your ear the first day you get there and it lasts about 2 or 3 days then you change it and put another on. It is totally water proof and the only side effect I have noticed is that you do get dry mouth, so remember to always have something to drink with you. I was even able to do the teacups last year! I would never have been able to even go on the carousel before I used this. It is great. Though I still felt a bit queasy on EE because of the backwards part. I made it through without getting sick.

Love that patch too, it's called Transderm Scop and it's available by perscription onlt. The patch lasts a few days and I had no side effects.

Just an FYI to those considering the Scopolamine patch - I think it works well, but you HAVE to follow the instructions that come with it - e.g., there is a certain length of time you must keep it on for (a few days, maybe), and don't take it off before then, don't wear it too long, etc.

I wore one once for about a 12-hour period, and then removed it (I had finished the travel). I took it off because I was experiencing severe dry mouth - it was like someone had stuffed my mouth and throat with cotton balls, it was horrible and no amount of water would make it go away.

About 20 minutes after I took the patch off, I got very woozy and nauseous, and started throwing up, and I was in bed sick as a dog for the rest of the day, and part of the next day!

Maybe I had a bad reaction to the patch - but everything I have heard is that it works great, but follow the directions. ;)

I have had severe motion sickness all of my life. A car ride of more than about 30 minutes does me in, I can not do a plane or boat or any spinning or fast ride without medication.
Dramamine knocks me out, so I take it for traveling and just sleep. I did the non-drowsy/bonine stuff once and had a bad reaction, I felt like I was moving in slow motion and each limb weighed a ton. I am scared to take it ever again.

The natural things like ginger and wrist bands do NOTHING for me, I think it depends on the severity of your motion sickness.
Even with dramamine I can not read in the plane or car, and if the ride is bumpy or curvy I will still get sick even with meds. I do not do any of the thrill rides at WDW, there is still a lot I can do so I just skip them.
Anything you try just follow the directions and be aware that different things work for different people.

I have been using Dramamine for years for the airplane and for a couple of cruises that we have done and it works great. Just make sure you take it in advance because once you get sick it's too late.

BONINE!!! I swear by it! I take it every day of my trip. It doesn't make me too sleepy- much less drowsy than Dramamine (I used to take that as a kid). I LOVE BONINE!!! :thumbsup2 I don't endorse a whole lot of things, but I DO ENDORSE THIS!!

I called my DD6's doctor and asked what to give her for the upcoming trip. I will be giving my daughter chewable Dramamine for the flight (I know it works).

However,Dramamine will knock her out so she can't take it for the park days. Dr. said to give her Zyrtec. It comes in two doses and in a chewable or liquid (in addition to the tablet). It is good for 24 hrs. A side affect can be drowsiness so we will give it to her before bedtime.
